---- About the Pattern ----
The Octopus Squish is a fast, easy, and no-sew amigurumi, meaning it’s crocheted in one piece! The design features a round, squishy body and eight chubby little tentacles that can be pulled down to appear jellyfish-like, or curved upwards cutely for sitting.
They make kawaii (“cute”) desk ornaments or keychain charms. They serve as fun kids toys or nursery decor, and are great for selling at craft fairs. They can also be used for therapy as a sensory fidget toy or stress ball, for people with anxiety, ADHD, or autism. This pocket-sized plush makes a great friend!
You can use any yarn fiber, from cotton to chenille velvet, to create different textures…or any weight to create different sizes! Hold yarn doubled to make an extra big Octopus! This project looks great in all different yarn colors, including solids, ombre, self-striping, and variegated yarn. Customization is easy by adding crocheted appliques, bows, beads, buttons, eyes/facial features, and more.
Size:
Height: 2 inches (5 cm) - if using super bulky weight 6 yarn and a 5mm hook
Level:
★★☆☆☆ Familiar Beginner/Intermediate. Requires familiarity with stitches used (below).
Stitches/Terms (US Terms):
FO = fasten off
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
inc = increase (insert 2 sc in same st)
dec = decrease (sc 2 sts together)
BLO = back loops only
FLO = front loops only
Materials:
• Any weight yarn with suitable hook. My recommended yarn for a big, squishy octopus is: hobbii.mvk.co/2g8s4
• Clover Amor crochet hook: amzn.to/3fXpjkD
• Plastic safety eyes (x2). These are the cute sparkly ones I used: amzn.to/3OtdzVB
• Fiberfill stuffing
• Scissors

I messed up pretty bad but it's still cute we r just gonna ignore the fact mine has 12 tentacles 😭
Awwww!!! The more tentacles the merrier I guess? That sounds pretty cute though; it'd made an awesome jellyfish!! :D
@@SweetSofties hehe after like 3 octopi I finally mad a normal one its so cute and it's tentacles curled up lol
Awww that sounds absolutely precious!!!!
Mine has got 6 haha It's a warrior octopus that has lost two tentacles in a battle 😌
@@amandarynio6995 my octopus can spare some hehe
I love your pattern! Because I used a different yarn, I had to make my octopus squish bigger. Now I have an octopus plushie! Thank you for this amazing activity to make this cute creature!
So glad you enjoyed this pattern! Yay! I hope you'll enjoy the other tutorials that I have, such as a no-sew dinosaur ("Tiny-Rex")!
Hey I wanna make it a little bigger than she’s done it so like the head part, so Can I in round 8 not decrease and keep adding sc’s and do that for a row or two and then follow the instructions on decreasing will I get a bigger head or will I mess it up, a beginner here id appreciate any help thankuou
This is the first project i ever completed since learning to crochet and i have never been happier in my adult life. Please it is SO CUTE i nearly cried when i put on the eyes and declared it complete. Thank you so much for the wonderful tutorial! Looking forward to making more of your squishies! ❤
That's so awesome to hear!!! Aww....thank you for such a sweet comment. This makes my day. GO YOU!!!! I have a lot of other beginner-friendly (and no-sew) projects like this on my channel, like the Whales, Duck, Chicken/Hen. Hope you'll enjoy making more of my squishies!
@@SweetSofties yes! I'll definitely let you know when i make the others! Have a nice day!
I actually really appreciate you puting a side by side picture at 00. 30 seconds with a side by side of the two different outcomes based off of what yarn and hook you used, so helpful!
Glad that part helped!! This is great feedback for me so I know to do that more in my future videos :D
loved how the first row ended up as a circle, first time using that method!
This is the perfect little mini octopus! I had so much fun making one. Thank you for sharing!
I think I made my own creature who has 14 tentacles , but it's turned out pretty cute 😂.......thank you for the tutorial ❤
Wow, 14 tentacles!! We have a winner hahaha. I'm sure your creature gives great hugs!
I have 10 😂
I'm an absolute beginner and I'm exited to learn how to do this. I got into crocheting because my grandma crochets blankets for people and i thought it looked fun so here i am. 😁😁
Aww that's so awesome to hear!
I find some of these step-by-step tutorials, so hard to understand but after a couple of sweat and tears, I finally got the hang of it! 🎉
Good job!!! You did it!
I'm an absolute beginner. I'm going to try this for my first project. It's so cute! First I need to go watch a tutorial on how to decrease and increase so I understand it. Can't wait to make this cutie! Thanks so much!
Awesome to hear! You can do it!!
I can't even get the chain started - even at 0.25x speed playback 🤦♀️. I'm used to starting with the magic ring lol
I love the patern but I found it difficult to follow I think because I've never crochet before I wish I could find a video that was beginner teaching. I was completely confused on several steps. 🤣😬 will try a different day to try to complete it.
I made my octopus pink and it turned out adorable 🥹 thank you for this tutorial ❤
Yay, that's awesome!! Happy to hear this!
I made it! My first time ever to crochet something and it turned out super cute! Thanks for the tutorial, it was explained very nicely :D
Yay!!!! Happy to hear that! High-five!
Ll
This is so adorable! I bet your daughter loves them too!
Thank you for sharing! 💜
Thank you, and yes she does!! Lena loves lining them up and recently gave them little spots/beds to rest in.
@@SweetSofties Awwww, that’s so adorable!! 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you! It turned out so cute! I'm definitely making more and following more of your patterns. Next is the sitting teddy for my youngest. This one is for my oldest (she loves it). They're older teens but still like this stuff.
Awesome to hear, adn the sitting teddy is my favorite little bear pattern! I get it -- I'm an adult and still like this stuff haha :)
Such a cute pattern 😊! It’s adorable 🥰! Thank you for sharing, take care 🤗💕!
So glad you like it!! Thank you!
After adding the tentacles I stopped and weaved in the ends. Then instead of stuffing I found that the baby octopus fits perfectly inside the big one ❤ 🐙
So awesome!!! A nice surprise to find in the octopus
Very clear, well done tutorial! I even used a chunkier yarn and it came out perfect first try!
it turned out so cute!! thank you for the tutorial!
So happy you like it! Thank you!
Wow it was really fast and easy to make thank you so much they are great little gifts for kids!
I just love fast projects! So glad you enjoyed it too!
Thank you for this pattern! I've been making the octopus squish for my friends and family. They love them.
That's so awesome!! They must love your octos!!
@SweetSofties they do! Thank you so much! I can't read crochet, so this helps a lot.
Damn!!!!! The best tutorial ever!!!!!!! The instructions are so clear man I watched so many tutorials but couldn't understand but with her tutorial I felt that it was so easy!! Thank you so much for this tutorial! Amazing for beginners like me🌷
Wow that's amazing to hear; thanks for the positivity and encouragement!!
made my first octopus today! thanks to youuuuu ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
So cute! It was very easy to follow and came our adorable 😍
Aww so happy to hear that! Yay!
Thank you so much for this video. I made a cute one fairly easily from your video (struggled a little with written tentacle instructions but got there). I love my little octopus 🎉. Many thanks for sharing so we can make our own 😊. I used blanket type yarn for a bigger, squishier one and it came out really well.
Glad to hear it!!
Thank you for this tutorial. I’m trying to get back into crocheting end this has been very useful. I’ve made 9 octopuses in 3 days, granted that the first one was kinda a flop. I have now been able to crochet 2 octopuses without watching the tutorial. All in all, thank you 😊
Awesome!! 9 octopus!!!
Thank you for your time and patience i made my first octopus it took me so long to find the right video keep it up ❤❤❤❤❤
Yay, happy to hear!!
Made my first octopus because of you! Thank you .
Wonderful!!
Thankyou so much
I am making this for my teacher. She gave me LOR and I am very grateful for her.
That's so sweet to hear! I know she'll love this gift!
Hey I wanna make it a little bigger than she’s done it so like the head part, so Can I in round 8 not decrease and keep adding sc’s and do that for a row or two and then follow the instructions on decreasing will I get a bigger head or will I mess it up, a beginner here id appreciate
So easy and a great start for any beginner.
Glad you think so! Yay!
Thank you for this tutorial! I was able to do my first ever project ^^
So awesome to hear!!
This was my first ever squishie project so it’s not very neat. I used a plush wool so mine is quite a bit bigger but I love it. Your tutorial was really easy to follow even for a beginner. Will definitely make more and I will try them in different sizes. Very cute! 😊🐙
I'm so glad you enjoyed the tutorial! These are so fun to make in different sizes!
I'm a beginner... I don't even know how to increase or decrease...and this is my first tiny project which turned out to be so cute🤌..your instructions were so clear...thank you 😇
GREAT JOB!!!!!
You are so talented with great ideas. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks so much 😊
Can I use cotton instead of fiber fill
Thank you for the tutorial! I made each of kids a cute little octopus. ❤
Yay!
Super cute! ❤ I chained 8 for the legs to add some extra curl! My sister made a bunch to use as carnival prizes at her school! 🐙
That is so awesome!! What great prizes!
From the sounds of it, I'm pretty lucky to have gotten eight tentacles! It turned out so well. Love this pattern!
Yay, happy to hear it!!
With your video and the instructions on your blog i manage to make a really cute octopus ! Nice tutorial 😄
Wonderful!
Very smooth description 😍😍 mine turned out awesome 💖💖
That's so awesome to hear!!
Thankyou so much 😭🫶. i made my first crochet project and it came out super cute .
I'm so glad to hear that!!
Me with my plump 8 legged octopus friend liked this video ❤ 10/10.
Awesome job!!
Thanks for this video!!! It's helps a lot.
Glad to hear it!!
Love the tutorial... However I've made about five of these and I'm still messing up after the last tentacle when you have to go into the back loops. The first and last tentacle just look wonky. What am I doing wrong?
Hi, I'm not sure why that is! Do you think it could be your tension/pull on the yarn, perhaps?
did you turn it inside out after R4-R7? bc my hook placement is not the same as yours. thanks for the tutorial!
Yes, you'll need to turn it inside-out so that the right side faces out! :)
Thank you so much!! I almost quit a couple times, but I finally finished it!! It's super cute, and we're just gonna forget that I couldn't fit 8 tentacles, so I have 4.
It's okay, you did it!! Your next one will have more tentacles! ;)
This was very helpful for last minute gifts for my bestie! I did end up making 10 tentacles, but its so cute! Thanks for the pattern ❤
That's okay, 10 tentacles = more to love!!
thank you for making a magic ring hack, so easy!
Glad you like it!! I can't get the magic ring to close with velvet yarn, so this is my go-to method! ;)
So is Round 3 basically just 3 SC into the same stitch?
Thank you so much!
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for thiss!! this is my first Amigurumi project🥺❤️ it turns out good, i thought my tentacles will have extra but just exact eight ^^
Yay, great job!!!
Just learning crochet did a few finger crochet baskets and a crochet rose but this is my first ever amigurumi and it's cute (does have some character since I frogged a bunch and think it increases a little too much (probably because I forgot to count and was having so much fun) but it was a cute first project that had step by step did improvise the legs by doing 10 chains so my tentacles were curling with single crochet since my piece was so big but as I finished I found seeing the decrease was out of frame that it went to the boarder of the words and found it difficult to follow alot but over all love how sweet and step by step you are and how visual you are for us to see helps soooo much to get through to project along with you especially someone who is still learning. As soon as I was done my kids were begging for me to make one. Definitely going to make it again and be more strict with the counting. And I'll be doing more of your video/works as well. Thank you for all that you do in making things. I think I'm going to like this skill and make it into a hobby thanks to you 🥰
I'm so happy to hear this! Yay!! It'll get easier as you keep working at it!!
If I use a bigger hook (3.5mm) do I have to increase the number of rows / adjust the instructions or can I follow the number of rows and stitches exactly please?
I recommend following the pattern as written! You can use a bigger hook with thicker yarn, which will create a bigger octopus! :)
After the second round, in the third round, (Sc, inc) x 8, does it complete the full round? So is 3 Sc in the same stitch? Is the inc on the next stitch?
It means to sc, and then in the next st, insert 2 sc (this is called an "increase"). Then repeat that around 8 times. You won't be putting 3 sc in the same st; it's an increase on the next st.
This tutorial is brilliant! Made my first amigurumi today! What stuffing do you recommend? I just used a tissue lol
I used fluffy yarn bc I didn’t have stuffing either.
Next one one of my daughters stuffies shall be sacrificed lmao (I have one in a donation bag don’t worry I’m not just taking one from her lol)
So cute! I've been making your crochet ducks and now there will be an crochet octopus invasion!! Thank you for your creations. So easy to follow. 🥰
So glad you like it!! Thank you! Haha your pile of cuteness is growing!
I think you just taught me how to do the magic circle in a much easier way!! 😢
THANK YOU ❤❤
Yay! I love the chain method :)
I am so confused cuz in the third row i was supposed to make an increase and 16x2 is 32 right? So why dod it say 24 stitches
So cute! I really enjoy myself making my octopuses 😍 thank you for sharing 🥰😘
Thanks so much dear, I appreciate you helping me with the test!!
I finaly made an amigurumi !! thank you so much !
So proud of you!!!
Love it ❤ it's so fast and was so easy to understand even I have to translate in German crochet language 😂
So glad you like it! Thank you so much!
So good
I finally made an octopus mini plushie after just making beanies all the time and now ill make 25 of them 😭since im giving them to my friends
What a nice gift for your friends!!
@SweetSofties yeah I gave one and she was so happy 😭
I love the sheen to the yarn you used in this tutorial. Do you remember by any chance what yarn it is? Your tutorials are awesome - easy to understand and follow. I have only been crocheting for 4 weeks now…. I am excited to make different sizes of octopi’s in different yarns! Especially some variegated colours, they would be so fun and colourful! 😊❤
I used Caron SS yarn (amzn.to/3NKoEo2)! It does have quite a nice sheen to it! I'm really glad you like my tutorials...thanks so much for the kind words, and I hope you have a fun time crocheting!
I dont know what i do wrong, but no matter how many times i make it, i can only fit 6 tentacles.. Is it because i use a thicker yarn, or what am i doing wrong? I do just as many stiches as explained :(
In the beginning is the side facing you the inside or the outside of the project?
In the beginning, you're looking at the wrong side of the project. You'll need to flip it out!
thanks!
Absolutely! :)
Right at the very start, I'm really struggling to see how you 'insert' the single crochets into the chain...
I am 15 and this is my first time trying amigurumi and its so good thank you very much I loved it 😍
This was a little hard at the start (this was my first real crochet project), I failed the tentacles, but it turned out pretty cute anyways, thank you for the tutorial!
So glad you hear you persisted and made it! That's huge because it's your first crochet project! Yay!! I'm sure you will find it easier as you make it again!
I have made this so many times now. How would I got about upscaling it regarding the tentacles?
Hi! Glad you like this pattern! You can make longer tentacles by adding additional chains to the desired length. Hope this helps!
Danke!
Wow, thank you so much for the support!! I hope you'll enjoy more of the free tutorials on my channel!!
Muy bien explicado, ya lo hice para mí nieto
So good to hear! Muchisimas gracias!
Hi, can I use the magic ring instead of chain 2? If so, how many chains should i make for the magic ring? Please reply as soon as possible
I saw them reply to another comment with the same question but they said you can do a magic circle with 8 sc instead
@@lunafox9 thank you so much for the help. I appreciate it!
@@marwailyas9431 your welcome
Hi! Yes, thank you LunaFox for helping me reply! Sorry I wasn't able to respond to comments earlier. LunaFox is right -- just a magic ring with 8 sc would be the same!
@@SweetSofties Thank you! Thats alright!
at 4:45 , did you flip it?
This was a fantastic second project! My octopus actually came out good?? Properly round, eight tentacles mostly spaced evenly, properly squishy. I feel like I cheated somehow, lol.
So awesome to hear! Great job!
This relinquished my will to live
My exact feelings
So after the single crochet we do 2 increase stiches? So it’s 3 stiches in one hole?
Are you referring to R3? After a sc, do an increase (2 sts in the same st).
I just finished making my octopus but unlike the warrior octopus and the octopus with extra legs. Mine has the standard eight legs. My favorite color is yellow so i found velvety yarn at my dollar store and made a cute little Momma to go with the little yellow baby.
Aww that's so awesome to hear! Hahaha a standard octo with 8 legs, you did it! ;)
What to do in round 2?
hii is it ok to start with a magic circle with 8sc?
You can! It's hard to do so if you're using blanket/velvet yarn as the ring may be difficult to pull tightly. That's why I did the chain method with this design. However, you're welcome to use a magic circle instead!
@@SweetSofties thank you so much❤️
This is the first time I’ve been able to actually follow a pattern and make something! It’s so cute. I made two of them, a larger one and a smaller one (just changed the hook size). Both times though I ended up with six tentacles so I’m not sure what I am doing wrong. Third times the charm maybe?
Great job! Not sure about the tentacles...but sometimes when that happens, it's because stitch count was off in the previous round. Did you have 12 sts instead of 18 before starting the tentacles?
thank you for the tutorial, it look very cute, maybe my octupus has 9 tentacles but he is fine, and special, and is for someone special, só thank yooou
You're absolutely right! 9 tentacles = 1 more to love! :)
We like this 😊
Awesome!!
It says free written pattern but I can't find it on the blog
Hi! I will be adding the free written pattern to my blog later on...probably in a month or two! Sorry for the wait! Right now it's available as a free video tutorial! :)
@@SweetSoftieshey, have you added it yet? all i can find is the pdf version that u have to buy
@@poppyhunt7684 Hi, it's now on my blog. Hope you enjoy the free pattern~
My use: ( R1) Ch2, Insert 8 SC from the 2nd ch |(R2) Increase ( Remember how many stitch ) | (R3) Sc,Inc | (R4) Sc Continues | (R5) SC, Dec
your awesome!
thank you!!
Mine is pretty good besides the fact it has 16 tentacles
I SOMEHOW MADE IT YESS!! MY FIRST EVER CROCHET PROJECT LOL
I mean its weird, not that cute but my bf said it looks nice and yeah it has 6 tentacles
Yay, you did it!!! That's a big deal!! Congrats! It's okay if it has 6 tentacles...maybe it's an insect-pus!
@@SweetSofties Haha thanks
idid this, since idont have any eyes i jusflipped it upside down and made some underleaves now its like a flower bulb. 😂
great tutorial ❤
That's creative! And thanks!!
How did you get 24 sts in R3? mine is 32sts. what did I do wrong? 😭😭
Me too😭
Mine turned out really big.. not sure how but it’s super cute and I love it
Bigger = more huggable!! Glad you love it!
Idk how but I don’t have the two loops I only have one loop like you were talking about in stage 9 I only have one row
I messed up so bad that my octopus now has 15 tentacles but it looks very very cute!
Awww, the more tentacles the merrier I guess!
Can i make this bigger like a huggable plush by using regular worsted weight yarn and more stitches?
You can make it bigger with more stitches, but it'll be a different pattern so I wouldn't recommend following this tutorial for a big one!
@@SweetSofties ohh okay
My one become if octopus ate neptune 🙂.but it looks good...thank u 😍
"octopus ate neptune" LOL I'm trying to imagine it!!
where did you get the eyes for these darling octopus squishes?
These are the ones I got! amzn.to/496kX3l
Is it okay for you if someone sells this octopus after making it after your pattern?
You are welcome to sell finished items from my patterns if you credit me as the designer with my name and site, such as: "Designed by Sweet Softies, www.sweetsofties.com".
Thanks for asking!
