Love my HS double rainbow! Been using one for solo trips with the dog since '11, perfect size , easy setup, and very comfortable!

My favorite tent is the Tarptent Double Rainbow DW. Got to testing it right away in January of this year with back to back big storms. After fixing some seam sealing issues from the first storm, the second storm brought 60mph wind gusts and 10 inches of rain. Not one drop of rain inside. Perfect for me being 6'3 and my whole pack. Look forward to bringing it on my next thru hike. Single wall is just not my style after three times on the Appalachian Trail.

Thx for your comments. I got interested in the rainbow and tarptent from the BE review that was so glowing for the LI but the DW will be better bc of the double wall and I like all the view out and stargazer mode. My hubby is 6’3” so it’s a good match for us. I’d not paid much attention to Tarptent before the great rainbow LI review. We’re out east so humidity is always a concern.

I'm super happy that I switched from the Duplex to the Double Rainbow Li, having the ability to zip the rain fly shut was a huge upgrade, not to mention being rid of that stupid half moon mesh door design that Zpacks insists on. I also really like those pockets at each mesh door with both a top entry and side entry, I was impressed with how clever and useful that they turned out to be

I just recently got the Nemo Dagger OSMO today after doing some research on what would be the best or better tent to use for some solo trips with my dog. One of the bonuses I found the Nemo has is the darker color that keeps the inside of the tent not a light bulb during the day (not a whole lot of people make mention about that factor). I understand a lot of people make a pass on it due to the weight, but so far I don't see a huge issue in it as like you said you can split the parts.

I picked up the Outdoor Vitals Fortius 1P last month and man it’s phenomenal. Aside from its outstanding cost to weight ratio, it’s got full mesh walls on both side of the tent, something that is lacking in every other single wall one person trekking pole tent that I’m aware of. The ventilation is excellent because of this. I spent the night in Georgia, it was high 70’s during the day and dropped to low 30’s, it was overcast and drizzly all day, there was only a light breeze, and I pitched next to water. By all rights I should have woken up soaked. It was bone dry inside. It’s super roomy for one person and I’m 6’1” 220 lbs with a long wide rectangular pad, so most folks will feel like they’re in a palace. Can’t recommend it enough.

Totally agree with you. Spend more than 8 weeks in the Tarptent Double Rainbow Li this year, two larger bike packing trips in the US & Canada Rockies and Europe.
I am using the extra liner, which makes it a - nearly - double wall experience and also reduces the "see-through" of the Dyneema significantly. With two entries it has a ton of venting options, depending of set up direction and changing wind conditions. Great space for one person and gear, ok enough space for two.

Agree totally!! Latest hike with my Lunar Solo was Eagle Rock Loop in Arkansas this past summer. Light with easy 1 trekking pole set up. And single walls with bathtub tub bottom made for great ventilation in the humid summer nights. Also, the folks at Six Moon Designs will not rest until you are completely satisfied--great customer service! Until it fails me (which hasn't happened yet over 4 seasons/years), my REI passage (old version) is my rock-solid if somewhat heavy choice for when I return to Eagle Rock Loop next week for Thanksgiving.

I've been using Tarp Tent Bowfin 1 for 5 years now, which is semi freestanding, with a double wall, mesh inner layer, super easy to set up, and weighs only 37 ounces. I camp aprox 300 days a year, in all climate zones and weather conditions since I travel around the world by bicycle and I have nothing but praise for my Bowfin. I'm interested in what would be the advantage of this tent compared to Bowfin?

I have been laid up with an injury since March. I had planned to use a new Locus Gear Khafra 4p DCF mid tent with a 3p net inner this season. At 9' squared, you would think it is too heavy, but it is only around 2.3 lbs. I can get it lighter using a 2p inner.
Why would I want to use a 4p mid tent? Because at 6'-tall II find most tents are about six inches too short for me. My 4" pad means I bump the walls with either my feet or my head on tents like my Lanshan ll, which is an otherwise nice tent.
It seems like it rains on all of my trips. A 4p tent allows me ample room to lay out my wet gear. It gives me a huge vestibule. I can sit in my Helinox in the vestibule with a 2p inner. Yet my mid tent probably is very similar in floor area to other 2p tents with vestibules.
I mostly got the mid tent to use with my wife. I am very interested in the new Tarp Tent Dipole to replace my Lanshan ll on most solo trips. That tent only weighs 26 ounces. Not as light as the X-Mid Pro 2, but it is roomier inside and better-ventilated, which is a big plus with single wall tents. I would love to try both, but I can't. I have seen tall reviewers say the sloping wall on the X-Mid is either too close to their head or too close to their feet. I would be back to the Lanshan ll problem.
If not the Dipole? I would get the Double Rainbow Li.

The double rainbow design has a problem with the low angles from the corners to the apex at the cross bar. Each of the 4 panels sag and cannot be adequately pulled taut. With the fly in place the distance between fly and these inner panels is minimal. As a result, condensation drips into the living area whenever breezes move the fly or you brush the mesh. We had to switch it from a 2 person to a single. Plenty rainproof but not a particularly good living area.

I have the Aeon Li - for space & weight benefits. It is similar to the Zpacks Altaplex - 1P, single pole, just under 20oz, fits tall backpackers, uses 6 stakes but can be pitched without staking the apex line. Very quick to pitch and footprint is a little larger than the bathtub floor, which does allow for some internal gear storage. I was on a very crowded trail this past summer and was worried about camping spots - I was able to find an established site each night but I was glad that I could consider tent sites just a little bigger than my sleeping pad, The cross member at the apex is a little long which limits packability but I have adapted.

I read all the replies B4 composing the following:
Plzz. What is the Dynema tent weight when including stakes & poles? To say the tent weighs less than a pound is misleading if it can't be pitched.
The Hilleberg Enan is my tent, a tent I'm completely satisfied with, a tent I can count on to provide me with SHELTER from a rain or strong gusty windy storm, a tent I'll likely WILL to a relative when I die. I'm 5'3" so I have plenty of interior room in most any tent.

Just got the Tarptent Dipole1 and so far really like it. Be nice to have a one pound tent but for a few more ounces this is sooo much more livable, great ventilation with only 4 stakes. The other big issue I have with many of these other tent manufacturers is they are made in China. I have first hand knowledge in how they treat their workers and China’s treatment of minority groups. This is a moral issue for me. Many products we simply have no options but fortunately in backpacking we do. I will stay with Zpacks, Lite AF, EE etc and avoid made in China when I can. Off that rant I can see by all the desert camping you do how important having a free standing tent is. That is something I have no experience with. I have only hiked in the desert but never camped. I LOVE my BA Copper Spur with the pockets, etc. I’d love to be able rent, I’m sure with a deposit, some of these higher end trekking pole tents just to try. Wish these companies would let you do that. Just make the deposit the amount of the cost, return, deposit returned. It’s very hard to justify “trying” something for $700.

I’m pretty sure the Plex Solo replaced the Plexamid. I must have bought the last Plexamid they produced 😂 but I’m totally fine with that. The Plexamid has been nearly perfect for me over the last year. 🦑

Now that we can actually buy the x mid series (just got my x mid 2p) that tent would be interesting to have on your list for next year.

I've had the Duplex for a few years now and love it. Done 200 Miles on the CT and a couple hundred more on shorter trips with it and its still brand new looking. Does everything I want it to. I'm sure all these others are great but I'm great with it until it fails. Its large, light enough and very durable so far.

Sold my Nemo Dagger after one trip. Those jakes feet are absolutely irritating. If your hands are cold and its muddy and raining you get to fiddle with this garbage while trying to attach or detach the footprint and fly. Back to MSR!

Not impressed with the Fortis compared to others on the market. The TarpTent is expensive for a 2 lb tent!

If weight was the only reason for buying the TT Double Rainbow or any tent for that matter, I’d have a very different selection. Function before weight.

Yes. I think that tent is amazing for space, the weight and ease of pitching on any type of terrain.

Who carries just one pole? It's either 2 or none...

    • @RegrettablyLongwinded

Darwin, if I recall correctly, prefers one pole, hence his preference for single-pole tents such as the Altaplex.

I don't typically carry trekking poles, and so I'll carry one pole as needed, or I use an extendable carbon tarp pole.

I use a trekking cane. Shorter than a trekking pole but makes it nice to lean on during steep descents, which is about the only time I really want something like that. But usually I’m in a group and there is someone to bum one off to set up a tent or tarp.

You said the Aspect 2 was the worst tent, but you didn’t even say why? How does that qualify as a review? I don’t even know if you used it, because you show no footage; all you show is set up.

  • @The-GreenHornet

Your list is not very good with regards to weather conditions.
Two of your choices were nothing more than a ground tub with a tarp covering, calling those tents; I could tell under windy rainy or blowing sand conditions would make for a miserable night.
Your favorite tent needs trekking poles in order for it to be a free standing tent? SMH.
The Sea to Summitt 2nd on your list seemed to be the overall best for all types of weather conditions.
Also, you never gave any numbers with regards to weights of each tent.
Kinda important when giving tent reviews.

Why do you call it a 3D pocket ,,,, is there a 2D pocket or some other dimension i dont know about ,,, man it bugs me when people make up fancy names for shit , its just a pocket not anything else ,,,, oooo look a kangaroo pouch , and interlocking zipper seal , and a sky dome cieling .......oh now i want it .............just call it what it is , stop embellishing to make it sound better then it actually is ....i used to be a janitor but i never told anyone to call me a sanitation engineer because it sounds better .....

Maybe try something else than American brands... This makes it a review for americans only... kind of like calling your baseball league the world series. Try again. I- stand corrected, Sea to Summit is apparently Australian in origin.
