3 Styles of Muay Thai Guards (Long Guard, Dutch, Etc.)

  • Today we cover 3 different style of Muay Thai guards, suited for different body types and style of fighter. When choosing your style, you ultimately want to consider the type of fighter you and your opponent are. Feel free to blend and use what works best for you -- that's what being a martial artist is all about!
    1. Long Guard - Often utilized by taller fighters; hand traps, kicks, knees, and elbows.
    2. Muay Khao - translates to "knee fighter" as someone who likes to close off the distance, clinch up, and work knees and elbow strikes.
    3. Dutch Style - boxing heavy, tight guard, utilizing punch-to-kick combos.

And so i will train these moves in my own training of course...

Thank you for explicating on the elbows-out guard. I would always get frustrated when someone would tell me "hey, you're leaving your body exposed."
Like, that's the point. I would also add that keeping your elbows flared out makes it much harder for your opponent to land hooks and kicks to the head, both of which are techniques that concern me a lot more than body shots.

    • @donkeytwoddle
      @donkeytwoddle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It is the guard I use most, interspersed with a mid/long guard.
What I've found is I like using pointy elbow blocks on the foot the most. Elbows in that position allows you to do a 'hulla hoop' silly looking jelly-loose hip motion(if that makes sense?); a wiggle just like when you loosen out your hips. So I can ropa-dope my body away from kicks and such.
Being a wiggly target & there being unusual body target realestate; people throw their teaps and kicks deep into the spots your elbows usually cover. So you just return your elbows to that position with downwards & forwards force like you are elbowing their teap. Optimally I land elbow down&forwards on their toes or top bridge of the foot just as they drive it in.
It'll f@#k their foot up bad.
It can make me a pain to spar with, a much loved tool in the arsenal along with short inner-thigh knees in clinch & full-weight koala-resting/riding my opponent in clinch to drain them to shit.

    Somluck Kamsing
Somluck Kamsing (name used in the 1996 Summer Olympics) or Somrak Kamsing (Thai: สมรักษ์ คำสิงห์; RTGS: Somrak Khamsing; born January 16, 1973) is a Thai Muay Thai FIGHTER and Olympic gold medal-winning ** amateur boxer **. During the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Thailand, Kamsing lit the torch during the Games' opening ceremony. Kamsing was born in Khon Kaen. His older brother Somrot Kamsing also competed at the highest level as an amateur boxer.
    Muay Thai career
At age 7, Somluck began training and fighting in Muay Thai. At 11, he moved to Bangkok to fight in the bigger stadiums. Prior to switching to amateur boxing he was viewed as one of the best fighters in the sport. He didn't compete competitively in Thailand after making the switch, but he did take up the occasional fight against foreign fighters.[2]
In 2012 he made a return to the major boxing stadiums, not as a serious fighter, but to fight other semi-retired legends in hopes of attracting people to the sport. He beat fellow legend Jomhod Kiatadisak on October 4, 2012 at Rajadamnern Stadium in a fight with the largest ever side bet in Muay Thai, 5.27 million baht on the line.[3]
They fought again in December 7, 2012 on the Lumpinee stadium birthday show. This time Jomhod Kiatadisak won by points.
They fought third match with a 6 million baht side bet on February 7, 2013 and Somluck won again by decision.[4][5]
However, he lost to American Nak Muay Chike Lindsay by unanimous decision in a modified Thai boxing Push Kick: World Stand Off in Pomona, California, on March 2, 2013.[6]
Somluck fought to a draw with another legend, Yodwanpadet Sor Junlasen under special rules, at Rajadamnern Stadium on 2 April 2015. Somluck was only allowed to punch while Yodwanpadet could fight full Muay Thai.[7]
THIS FIGHTER WAS A SIGHT TO SEE !!

I think Muay Thai has a serious issue with mobility out of fear of low kicks. Samart didn’t use the traditional rear foot heavy style and was able to move and evade much more easily. Committing to counting on getting your leg cut up is a bit strange to me. It feels very cultural. Like when Brazilians looked down on leg locks.

Ye but wath about in a street fight u wouldn’t be in Cline to through many kick well maybe low kick or head kicks of course but body kicks not ideal. But the clinch can be super effective against someone who doesn’t no how to defend it,and a boxer wouldn’t know.

@Meditatin_Bry Jonathan haggerty isn't a lowkick specialist, his known for his dangerous elbows and a good teeps. And the last time I checked he lost his belt to iron man and the fight after that.
I personally am not a Liam Harrison fan but I'll give credit where credit is due.

@Meditatin_Bry the fucking sentence before that, the timestamp is for lowkicks, only person that does dutch-style lowkicks who is also at the top is Liam Harrison, most of his fights get stopped because of a KO or the opponent can't stand on their legs

i like handmovement, its super confusing if they move up and down with no real pattern, combined with slight shoulder rolls it gets super hard to guess punches and an opponent has to focus on the hands much more what gives you great opportunities for quick low kicks to the inside or sweeps
