Whoever did the casting for this production needs to freaking cast Broadway shows! This cast is spectacular! It's almost unbelievable that so many extremely talented people can just happen to work together and work together so well!
Usually Judas is my favorite in a given performance (I tend to prefer his songs and characterization, I often find Jesus a little flat as a character) but I have to say this Jesus is absolutely freaking mind-blowing. I really like the choices he made, both vocally and acting. He's my favorite in the show and is captivating every time he's on stage.
This production and the amateur one done in Italy are both available on TH-cam and they are both excellent. This production has the best Jesus i've ever seen. Sean Matthew Whiteford who also directed has a powerhouse voice. This is one of the most inventive and creative stagings i've yet seen of this musical. Jasha Woodal is superba as Mary Magdalene. The gender reversed casting on Herod and Pilate is great. Superb production.
Like so many others in the comments, JCS snob here as well...have also directed it...I was fortunate to see Ted Neeley and Carl Anderson perform this in 92, and my friend Larry was Ted's understudy! While some directorial choices i didn't particularly agree with, overall this was freaking brilliant. Had to watch the end of "the temple" several times bc it was THAT GOOD. I am convinced that the dude playing Jesus is the love child of Ted Neeley, Steve Balsamo, and Drew Sarich....he's unbelievabl! OBSESSED with Herod!!! That, was utter genius! Mary's voice is absolutely glorious. And how frickin BADASS was "this Jesus must die"? Thank you for the incredible amount of work that went into this...the set, lights, band...everything...how i wish i could've seen this in person. Bravo and well done!

This has to be one of the best productions i have ever seen and i saw some of the first ones back in the early 70's. These are not just vocalists, they are performers who have taken on the persona's of the different roles and let them shine through.This is an exceptional group of people who have taken this masterpiece and brought some of the harmonies and rhythms to the present day.

Wow. Just finished “Everything’s Alright” and I just had to pause and gush about Woodall as Mary. I’ve seen so many versions of this show but I’ve never seen any of the women playing Mary hit those notes with the kind of intensity she was showing in her first two numbers. She’s phenomenal!
Wow ... this totally blows away the big budget productions! Gets back to the roots of the '73 film (benchmark imo) with a raw and fresh take on this Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice masterpiece.

This is probably just as good as the live arena tour. And this is 100,000x better than the John legend version. I loved Herod and how they made Jesus much less angry then other productions but yet still full of passion. Everyone KILLED it! 🤩
I just have to add my gushing praise to this gem of a production. I, like it seems so many of those below me, am a very avid Superstar fan and seek out productions for fun here on TH-cam, I have seen a lot. A lot have wowed me, a lot intrigued me and some just baffled me. This was definitely a wowed and intrigued one. I discovered this from a clip of your Queen Herod, scrolling through the “reviews” I knew it would be a good watch but nothing prepared me for what I got. A Queen Herod was visionary and I loved her but I was absolutely and gobsmackingly blown away by your Pilate. As a female who has gravitated to that role most in this whole production it was fabulous to see a woman take on the role, and the pure genius of having Jesus playing the accompaniment to Pilate’s Dream was *INSPIRED* for her alone I want to share this to my fellow JCS fans. That’s not to negate from your Jesus at all, his emotional depth he brought was fantastic. The end of Gethsemane broke my heart because I could feel how broken Christ was. “Could We Start Again Please” has always been a song I loved, but since the recent death of my mother it’s taken on a whole new meaning to me. Sadly it’s not often productions do it justice, but this one was so beautiful it seriously made me sob. Just over all, fantastic fabulous job, thank you for sharing it with us and I will be in the look out for other productions from you, but will definitely be back when I need a good JCS fix!
as a woman i have always wanted to play a main role in this musical but the only female role is mary, and i have wanted to play so many others. i love seeing the original characters recast as women, it's such a fresh take and gives me hope that someday i can be judas, simon, herod, pilate, or even jesus onstage.
I disagree a lot with some direction choices and acting, but the vocalists are simply outstanding. Jesus, Judas, Mary, Caiaphas exceptionally great vocals. I get that this cast is by musicians, not actors, and I completely accept it. These guys are driven by pure passion and love towards what they do, and they do great. Everyone looks great. The live band is doing an epic job. I cried like a baby in the end. Kudos to Sean Whiteford for Gethsemane. What a beautiful, talented and passionate man. One of my biggest dreams is to play Judas, Pilate or Jesus in any production. Happy that the dream of you guys came true.

They do some truly incredible riffs and their vocal range is insane but sometimes it's so much that the actual melody gets lost and the performance is uneven. Take the 'The Temple' number. In this version the last 'Get Out' is incredible but it takes away from the power of the G5 in 'Gethsamane' because it's soo big and which is a shame as Gethsamane' is Jesus' only solo. Compare to 'I don't know how to love him' where you could do riffs galore but the actress keeps it measured and prioritises drawing attention to the words and the emotion rather than her range. I love the 1973 version so I'm biased but that's my 2 cents.
Jesus had all the vibe of Ted Neeley - superb! I loved how the Sanhedrin was a rock group. Definitely way cooler than the newer takes on this musical. I enjoyed this production very much.

I love that little interaction between Judas and Mary just after ‘I Don’t Know How to Love Him’, a nice little bit of depth to their characters between the lines
I've seen so many ways productions have tried to make the Pharisees intimidating. They've been made to look like Sith lords, corrupt businessman, a biker gang. Who would've thought the best, most intimidating version is the production that made them into Slipknot?

Nothing like the Original or the Film but this comes quite close. I was able to carry on my Easter weekend tradition of Many years of standing Thank you and a Blessed Easter weekend to one and all.
I like how the characters also play instruments- Jesus playing the piano when pilot was talking about her dream and the priests playing guitar when Judas comes to tell them about Jesus are particularly effective- It really adds another dimension

Right back to the rock opera routes of the original album with very little needless "quirky" touches that a lot of productions have. And several of the cast playing instruments too, like in the Barbican the same year. Really impressed, well done!
Thanks for posting this though it took me 3 years to find it! hehe Congratulations on as fine a production of JCS as I have seen. I have seen about 7 different productions and been in two others and the challenge of finding so many outstanding singers and musicians is not for the faint of heart. Taking on this show is to my mind one of THE most challenging productions a director, production team and cast can take on. I have never experienced a production of JCS short of the original London studio album or the movie staring Ted Neally and Carl Anderson handle this show so well. Nothing is perfect particularly when there are so many challenging parts to handle and all of the cast required to handle them. I think your production of JCS accomplished this as well as anyone has a right to expect. Thank you again and I hope that the COVID years and now are treating all of you well. I recently was trying out for JCS in my local community theater and I just came across this while video searching. I want to say as a fan of this musical, this is one of the most beautiful renditions ever! Everyone is so talented as musicians! Their voices just bring tears to my eyes!
On a whim, I tried out for a role in a PAC-REP (Carmel, CA) production of Superstar. The music of my youth! Alas, I did not get selected as Jesus, the Senior Citizen. Nor as Judas, the Elderly. But I did portray one of the High Priests. Oh, what a dream come true! Of course, if I had done such a thing when I was younger, I would have really been the High Priest! ;-)

pilot and Herod incredible, the guy who plays Jesus just so amazing, his version of Gethsemane so emotional well done to everyone in this production I’d buy this on dvd if it was out watching this really made my day I just think all the cast their voices were fantastic , Mary, Judas, the apostles I’m definatly going to follow this channel
I'm a bit late to discover this, and I cant stop listening as though for the first time. JCS has been central to my faith for over 40 years, but this made me sob like no other performance. The director also plays the lead--quite a feat. This had humor, pathos, and incredible performers. I wish this could come around again, but I am grateful for the vision and inspiration of the cast and crew. This is my gold standard now.

An incredible production of Superstar. Jesus's vocals are insane. I loved Judas's Ned Kelly hairstyle and beard. Mary is wonderful and such a great ensemble too.
I love this musical. I was in the cast, when my amateur drama group performed this musical, and it has a very special place in my heart. We performed the musical in a church. This is a great production, of the musical, which has now become my Easter musical

This is probably my favorite version of JCS I’ve seen, weirdly I like it a lot more than the really high budget productions. The comments aren’t giving enough credit to the background acting from Simon, Peter and the others, really nice touches to have things like Simon mocking Caiaphas during ‘Hosanna’ and Peter especially objecting during ‘Strange Thing, Mystifying’ (or rather the way it’s staged results in him standing right next to Mary)
It's been said a hundred times, this is such a good production! You might have my favorite progression of early act1 Jesus to act2 Jesus! A very good actor as well as a singer, although everyone in this is a very good singer!

Jesus' voice here is awesome. It reminds me a lot of the Spanish version interpreted by Camilo Sesto... The high notes were not just "high", but are also gritty and full of emotion. Actually, all singers in this production are incredible!
I had the privilege of getting to watch the original cast perform this live just a couple of months after they did their first performance. I won't lie, they were better, but tis cast still did an amazing show, and I loved it:) :) :) :) :)*****
Ahh this is such an awesome production!! For me, Jesus Christ Superstar has always worked much better as an album listening experience than a traditional musical show (which can tend to feel a little awkward), so it’s rlly cool to see a version that translates that experience so well. The use of instruments on stage, the focus on showcasing absolutely insane vocals, the minimalist staging, and use of handheld mics all work to create a super unique vibe that perfectly transforms Jesus into a rock and roll superstar in ways a lot of bigger productions don’t do nearly as viscerally. Y’all did a great job I’m very glad I came across this Sidenote: Jesus singing “Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?” before Judas actually kisses him is such an interesting idea and I love the ambiguous omniscience Jesus has in this production through the direction and acting
I would have paid soo much to see this. Can you come to Austin Texas? This Jesus is like Ted Neely. I saw the Broadway show this year before COVID. I was one of the lucky ones. That Jesus was good but this guy is what it’s supposed to be like. Andrew Lloyd Webber please cast him next time.

The acting and singing are excellent. And though I don't think there could be a woman king or governor in those days, they played their roles extremely well.
I’m disappointed that no one else has mentioned the placement of Could We Start Again Please (after Peter’s Denial in this production, instead of after Herod). Best version of Trial Before Pilate.
Probably my favorite place I’ve seen “Could we start again please” put is after the crucifixion. It fits so perfectly. It makes way more sense to be there and it musically shifts the show for the better following the somber “John verse” If you ever get a chance to see it placed after the crucifixion you probably will not like it any other way

This is one of the coolest renditions that I have seen in a great while.
Right back to the rock opera routes of the original album with very little needless "quirky" touches that a lot of productions have. And several of the cast playing instruments too, like in the Barbican the same year. Really impressed, well done!

Thanks for posting this though it took me 3 years to find it! hehe Congratulations on as fine a production of JCS as I have seen. I have seen about 7 different productions and been in two others and the challenge of finding so many outstanding singers and musicians is not for the faint of heart. Taking on this show is to my mind one of THE most challenging productions a director, production team and cast can take on.
I have never experienced a production of JCS short of the original London studio album or the movie staring Ted Neally and Carl Anderson handle this show so well. Nothing is perfect particularly when there are so many challenging parts to handle and all of the cast required to handle them. I think your production of JCS accomplished this as well as anyone has a right to expect.
Thank you again and I hope that the COVID years and now are treating all of you well. Regardless, all of you will always have this production and the memories of creating it together for the rest of your lives. Outstanding!

I recently was trying out for JCS in my local community theater and I just came across this while video searching. I want to say as a fan of this musical, this is one of the most beautiful renditions ever! Everyone is so talented as musicians! Their voices just bring tears to my eyes!
On a whim, I tried out for a role in a PAC-REP (Carmel, CA) production of Superstar. The music of my youth! Alas, I did not get selected as Jesus, the Senior Citizen. Nor as Judas, the Elderly. But I did portray one of the High Priests. Oh, what a dream come true! Of course, if I had done such a thing when I was younger, I would have really been the High Priest! ;-)

WHO THE HELL PRODUCED THIS??!! I counted over 5000 changes is this production that I found absolutely original, spontaneous and refreshing. I've upped my rating to 4 3/4 stars.
I first found this production on a free weekend of the Broadway Channel so it might actually be a Broadway production, who knows?
This follows that version.
That one is worth paying for.
It had large screen TV reports in the background and Caiaphus etc were wired as secret police!

pilot and Herod incredible, the guy who plays Jesus just so amazing, his version of Gethsemane so emotional well done to everyone in this production I’d buy this on dvd if it was out watching this really made my day I just think all the cast their voices were fantastic , Mary, Judas, the apostles I’m definatly going to follow this channel

Fantastic. I played King Herod in my college production. I have to say she was fabulous. Everyone in this production was A1.
I'm a bit late to discover this, and I cant stop listening as though for the first time. JCS has been central to my faith for over 40 years, but this made me sob like no other performance. The director also plays the lead--quite a feat. This had humor, pathos, and incredible performers. I wish this could come around again, but I am grateful for the vision and inspiration of the cast and crew. This is my gold standard now.
This is the first time I've seen this show in it's entirety and I'm SO glad I picked this video. Everyone did a fantastic job!! Especially the woman playing Mary Magdalene. She was amazing!!!
An incredible production of Superstar. Jesus's vocals are insane. I loved Judas's Ned Kelly hairstyle and beard. Mary is wonderful and such a great ensemble too.
I love this musical. I was in the cast, when my amateur drama group performed this musical, and it has a very special place in my heart. We performed the musical in a church.
This is a great production, of the musical, which has now become my Easter musical

This is probably my favorite version of JCS I’ve seen, weirdly I like it a lot more than the really high budget productions. The comments aren’t giving enough credit to the background acting from Simon, Peter and the others, really nice touches to have things like Simon mocking Caiaphas during ‘Hosanna’ and Peter especially objecting during ‘Strange Thing, Mystifying’ (or rather the way it’s staged results in him standing right next to Mary)
It's been said a hundred times, this is such a good production! You might have my favorite progression of early act1 Jesus to act2 Jesus! A very good actor as well as a singer, although everyone in this is a very good singer!

Jesus' voice here is awesome. It reminds me a lot of the Spanish version interpreted by Camilo Sesto... The high notes were not just "high", but are also gritty and full of emotion. Actually, all singers in this production are incredible!

Ahh this is such an awesome production!! For me, Jesus Christ Superstar has always worked much better as an album listening experience than a traditional musical show (which can tend to feel a little awkward), so it’s rlly cool to see a version that translates that experience so well. The use of instruments on stage, the focus on showcasing absolutely insane vocals, the minimalist staging, and use of handheld mics all work to create a super unique vibe that perfectly transforms Jesus into a rock and roll superstar in ways a lot of bigger productions don’t do nearly as viscerally. Y’all did a great job I’m very glad I came across this
Sidenote: Jesus singing “Judas, must you betray me with a kiss?” before Judas actually kisses him is such an interesting idea and I love the ambiguous omniscience Jesus has in this production through the direction and acting
I would have paid soo much to see this. Can you come to Austin Texas? This Jesus is like Ted Neely. I saw the Broadway show this year before COVID. I was one of the lucky ones. That Jesus was good but this guy is what it’s supposed to be like. Andrew Lloyd Webber please cast him next time.

The acting and singing are excellent. And though I don't think there could be a woman king or governor in those days, they played their roles extremely well.
I’m disappointed that no one else has mentioned the placement of Could We Start Again Please (after Peter’s Denial in this production, instead of after Herod). Best version of Trial Before Pilate.
Probably my favorite place I’ve seen “Could we start again please” put is after the crucifixion. It fits so perfectly. It makes way more sense to be there and it musically shifts the show for the better following the somber “John verse”
If you ever get a chance to see it placed after the crucifixion you probably will not like it any other way
JCS is one of my favorite shows, and these singers are great singers. I never cared for the ppl in the show having mics I never understood that
