That's because Ryunosuke is intimidated by Van Ziek on the 1st, but on the 2nd game, he's kind of obsessed by him. Plus, on the 2nd game, the big mistery revolve much more around the Reaper of the Bailey.

Van Zieks is the definition of “the duality of man” and I love it. He is a proper, mature, calm, aristocratic man yet he slams his leg on the table and throws wine around the court like an immature angry child. He is very funny as a character even though he really shouldn’t be. He is simultaneously funny, scary and intimidating at the same time. Ironically funniest character in the game. He is very intelligent and rational, however he is very emotionally irrational blaming one race for his brothers death. He is racist yet he is just, honest and cordial. Despite his prejudices he still chooses to help Ryu uncover the truth above all else and it is that desire for the truth that makes him become closer to Ryu as a person. He has humanity, despite being wrongfully prejudiced. He is rich yet he hates the rich. He is apart of the judicial system yet he despises everyone apart of it. Everyone thinks he is the Reaper but he is actually aiding Britain rather than destroying it. He trusts Ryunosuke (especially with Albert) more than Japan, Britain and its judiciary, despite him being racist. Ironically he opens up to Ryu more than anyone else. He looks intimidating but he is generally ok towards others. He should be a corrupt prosecutor who never lost, however he is quite the opposite. He looks intimidating but he is just tired, depressed and desperately needs therapy. He should have been the monster but he isn’t. He is simultaneously likeable and unlikable. This theme shows how he can be simultaneously intimidating whilst also extremely depressed. Your perspective changes based on the game that you play. Sounds intimidating in Adventures but it sounds tragic in Resolve. Your perception on van Zieks also changes as you play because he subverts your expectations.
The man is a pile of contradictions and I love it, legitimately the best thing about his character other than his complexities, depth, growth and development. Barok illustrates the fact that, people can change and that is something that I greatly appreciate about his character. His beliefs and preconceived notions evolve throughout the game. These contradictions are what makes him feel very “human” to me. Humans are irrational creatures and van Zieks’ displays this irrationality perfectly. The most shocking thing about this game is that they have managed to make a somewhat likeable, three dimensional, multi-faceted racist who is the most developed, complex, complete character with immense depth to him in the main cast. He is a very fascinating character to me. That is a strong feat.

@@freezycastform99 😁 heh heh thanks so much!(ive only seen his visual design and heard this... maybe a couple dialogue lines... nothing story wise... but I've also seen how he composes himself with body language)I listen more to instrumental, cinematic pieces, and soundtracks and I often analyze how they change and shift.
The low bass(the drums or thumps) symbolize the weight or large stature/stability, the harpsichord an old reminder of the European wealthy, the sweet flow of the violas and violins... the back and forth with the notes... eventually falling down in scale... I hear and feel all these things as they change xD.
But it's not just me. The designers and composers of the game did a spectacular job to convey that... it's what Creators do. :) I like to draw, myself.
Edit: ah yes, and how could I forget... (listened to it once more) the delicacy of the small chimes to pounds of larger bells and the power behind the organ... truly an orchestrated masterpiece by someone who understands how each instrument can be used to tell a tale.

As I'm typing this I'm only about I would guess 1/4th into the final chapter of the first game, but I have special thoughts about van Zieks in the previous chapter.
I absolutely HATED how in the 4th case of adventures, van Zieks gave us SO much shit for making our own theories on what really happened, but by the midpoint of the trial hes making theories that only work if he omits circumstances that HE HIMSELF brought up. By that point I was just screaming "van Zieks aint shit" at my screen cus so many of his objections near the final third of the trial felt way too pretentious for how stupid and time-wasting they were. It kinda reminds me of that moment everyone has in AA1 where they realize edgeworth can be just as dumb as phoenix lol. I hope as I progress through the story van Zieks will go through some character development that'll make me like him, and I'm trusting it will seeing how he's so beloved here lol (I'll edit this when that happens)
