Amazing RESTORATION of a VINTAGE Ward DRESSER

  • This was a FREE Mid Century Bassett Dresser that was destined for the landfill based on the condition. I do my best to restore mid century furniture to original condition, but this one was beyond reasonable repair, and was missing the original legs. I made an attempt to stain the veneer top, but there were too many obvious stains. I was able to try Fusion Mineral Paint for the first time. I loved it and it covered well! I stained the drawers with General Finishes Gel Stain (Candlelite) and sealed them with 3 coats of a Polycrylic finish. I truly enjoyed the entire transformation process for this project.

Thank you for this comment. It was the first time I tried this combination. I have had critics mention the long legs and the angled front vs straight back but I needed this to be stable with such long legs. I chose the long legs so this dresser could be used at a practical height. Thank you for the support. I continue to learn amazing things from others. Barry

I've recently gotten into this rabbit hole that is furniture restoration videos and I have to say that yours have a particularly calming and serenely effect on me. I'm from Padua, Italy and I'm in full exam season at university, so watching your videos has been really helpful to destress and clear my mind before sleep. So even I understand what craftsmanship is needed to do that flipping business I had no understanding in it! Barry, I love when some of your older videos (that I’ve previously seen) pop up in my feed. I watched another furniture artist’s video today (Crys’Dawna of Bella Renovare) and she painted, created different textures and more, using different techniques (take a min to watch if you haven’t already). A big point of her video was about art therapy, especially during these stressful times. But not just about us doing something (a piece, a canvas, etc) but watching her was just therapeutic. Point is, it’s like watching you work on a piece (the care, patience, peacefulness) and how therapeutic it is for you too. A lot of HCWs replied to her and again I thought of you. So thank you for your videos, as well as your service, especially after the last couple of years. You are greatly appreciated, for craft and your profession.💜

I discovered the videos of furniture makeovers recently, and I'm really surprised that all the "flippers" gives us all the details about cost and price. This also comes to no good. For example, if somebody buys a dresser for 5 dollars then works on it for 2 hours and sells it for 500, if I were the buyer, then I would be annoyed. At the same time, they could often take a great loss themselves. This should not be public info. In the meantime, could you tell these French women not to use the F word in public? I was concerned, when you mentioned it was too far gone, and would be painted. Then, the black paint... I still waited nervously, and didn't jump ahead. What a FANTASTIC relief, I found, at the end!! It still turned out handsome, and still representing its heritage.

Hi from Wiltshire, England….my parents would often strip furniture (mostly antique pine) that had been painted in the 1960s and just use beeswax to feed the wood. I am a huge advocate of using old furniture again and have lots in my own home. It’s cheaper than new furniture and helps prevent it going to landfill….so a win win! Loving the videos…..😊
