"Love of My Life" by Queen features this a lot. When I was trying to learn the tune I asked for help on your forums, cause I just couldn't do these rolls and a lot of people helped with learning tips. Glad you now have a video on this.
I'm literally learning "Fingerstyle Club's" version of that song and started searching for some instruction on this technique. First song I've attempted that has it.
My guitar teacher just introduced me to the roll but I couldn't get it right. I've made more progress in the time it took me to watch your video than in the past week. Peeling the fingers off made it all so obvious Thanks very much.

After all let's remember Django Reinhardt. Always inspire me not to low my hands because of my injury. And just play and practice... Hey Justin....Greetings from Cleveland,Ohio.... I had my 3 middle fingers "nailed" because the winter cracks my nails....Great suggestion!!! This technique is great and really requires strong, confident pulling....Love your vids,mate!

You're right; it's so typical to do either the block, the strum or the "even spaced" picking , you might forget to check out other cool ways to spice up your fingerpicking. This surely made -my- todo list, as my style is a fingerpicking and strumming hybrid. I find it rather hard to get it right though but it's worth working on ^^
I'm learning a new song with rolling picking hand chords, and I was struggling to get the right tone. I think you nailed it! This technique will definitely be in my arsenal! Is that a mini-jumbo size guitar? You like it for fingerstyle?
Ahhh, life long learning. It just gets easy with experience right? I'll just practice this rolling chord for a few weeks so I can pull it off inconsistently for a few years. Then onto mostly consistently. On a positive note, I will do just that because I really do love playing this very difficult instrument.
Hey Justin, noticed metal bridge pins on your guitar! Would you please sometime make a vid with your opinion on different materials of bridge pins, saddles, exotic picks etc. and their influence on the sound? Just put a bone sattle on my acoustic - love the new tone! The moment I changed it I heard the sound became so much warmer and full, bassy. Thanks again for the great video!)

I didn't notice the metal pins but did notice black foam inside your guitar and in the past have seen the damping cloth above your nut and I've been curious what these items might do to your tone. It would be an interesting lesson about what, and what not to do to your guitar and what certain add-ons might do for your tone. Thank you, Buddy
Justin I think this is what's called a banjo roll, thouh that may have more finger motion. What you are doing is more wrist action than the way I have taught myself to banjo roll.
How do you do this with a 5 or 6 string chord though please ? The video only shows the D chord which only uses 4 strings so suits the 4 digits being used ie thumb and 3 fingers.
Hi Gary - you need to make a decision which of the 5 or 6 strings are the most important to what you want to hear. You can still roll - thumb plus fingers 1, 2 & 3 but obviously not on adjacent strings. My index finger always sounds the loudest.. .blocking out the other string sounds unless I make them all super quiet. It's usually the finger playing the open string. Any tips other than to keep them all quiet? Or is it just a practice, practice, practice thing? :)
How come this is such a popular technic, with tons of video 'tutorials' but no-one, ablosutely-freaking-NO-ONE is able to explain how they actually do it? Even in this video Justin literally says 'This is not how you do it'. Then how do I do it? It all sounds super logical while you're listening, but as soon as you pick up the instrument you realize the suggestions do not work
+Rodrigo Luna You can of course do it without the nails but the tone will be softer and not have a distinct attack. With nails like that it's like having a pick for each finger. There are finger picks on the market if you don't want to grow out your nails but they're kind of clumsy.
+Rodrigo Luna If you play enough the skin on your picking fingers will get hard and you'll have a decent enough attack. Tommy Emmanuel for example doesn't play with nails. If you've just started though, it sounds really quiet.

First what comes to my mind is "Romeo & Juliet" and "Sultans of Swing" by Mark Knopfler. Great using of such technique there ;)
