As a Galway man, who has dived head first into trains this year... thank you! I have been buying old books to try to find out more about the Clifden line, even so, there is very little information on the line... I would love to see it reintroduced! Fantastic video! Great pictures from Woodquay as well, many fond memories down there, great to see it in all its glory!
The combination of economics, politics and timing couldn't have been worse at the time it closed. It would be very different today and a quite amazing train ride. Would need a billionaire benefactor at this stage apart from the good work being done around Maam Cross station.
@@EuviRail I'll never be a Billionaire, or a Millionaire even, but I sent a few bob and look forward to visiting. I have friends in Oughterard where you can get Flynn's Honey for the dining car or future cafe! Great work, keep going! I love trains!
Interesting film. Visited Galway via Dublin by train a few years ago and had the feeling that the station was bigger than the lines there seemed to justify - now I know my hunch was right! Hope the restoration and new lines goes well.
Some years ago I stayed at the Ben Lettery youth hostel, when I left to walk to Clifden the hostel warden gave me instructions to walk along the old railway track bed through the Roundstone bog. What an experience . Such memories .
Been said my whole life that there isn't much hope of reopening stuff over the in the west because it didn't have the tourist traffic of say Dublin, Cork etc. But you build it and they'll come. It's beautiful out west even if the weather can get a bit harsh (understatment maybe😅)
Is there any news on the works being done on the Connemara Greenway at Recess? I was walking on a partially finished new section of greenway on the approach into Recess, and while there is JCB’s and construction actively happening at the site, I cannot find any information about it online? Do you happen to know what the story is with work progression on the Greenway in 2024?
For those interested Oakwood Press published “Rails Through Connemara” last year - all about this line.ISBN. 978 0 85361 759 4 I have been from Galway to Clifden a couple of times. The Pub at Clifden is worth a visit in the old station building. The engine shed is still there too.

I'd like to have heard you narrate this video as I enjoy hearing your accent.
There's a long form narrated version coming later in the summer.
@@EuviRail oh super, I'll look forwards to that then!

Thanks Paddy. Hope to visit the site in the coming month and provide an update.
Very interesting…we have been trying to trace and walk bits of the old railway where possible …..would make a very beautiful long distance walk.
Part of the line from Recess to Ballynahinch and on to Clifden is part of the Western Greenway now.
Very few videos concerning this railway have been uploaded - thanks for taking the trouble. I look forward to your next upload with interest1
Looks superb. Presumably it closed as insufficient traffic to be economical?

Excellent video. I love the history of Irish railways. The countryside is so green and beautiful.
Thanks Roger

Just beautiful, hope the Project goes really well.
Many Thanks for that.

Thanks John. "Rails Through Connemara" is well worth a read for anyone interested in the story of this line.

Thanks John. If only we had the railway network now that we had 100 years ago! I think rail is making a comeback now.
