Honestly, I don't think this video should get the kind of hate it's getting. It's a genuine question that people just starting to watch the sport may have, and WTF1 have explained it very well.
Airbags are really just a stopgap that doesn't sacrifice comfort. They exist because the average person doesn't want to be so tightly strapped into a vehicle that they physically cannot move in their seat. As soon as you start using harnesses, helmets and neck braces, airbags become pointless. Heck, I'd argue that curtain airbags are already redundant in cars with bucket-style seats.
@@webcrawler9782 not really . In the pitlane , it is just a button where you press it and it automatically drives itself at 80kmph . Cruise control is where you go at any speed and ou press it , it will continue at same speed , even at 300kmph

FYI - Airbags and all safety measures on any cars were only meant for 60-80kmh. So your 5 star safety rating vehicle means little if you crash at 100+kmh. Physics always rules how you will live or not.
If you watch season 1 episode 8 of “Formula One Drive to Survive” on Netflix, about mid way through you will see a crash where the tire of the airborne Mclaren looks like it touches the Alfa Romeo driver’s head but the tire actually hits the cage around his head and never reaches his helmet. My point is that there is also a cage around the driver’s head
Other reason is that airbags are only effective in one impact. So in multi impact accidents the wouldn't be that effective. Another one. Imagine a car makes contact with another one not causing terminal damage but deploying the airbag... Wouldn't that be embarrassing? Also where do you place the sensors. In the front wing? The most fragile part of the car?
And what happens if the car doesn't crash with the front first? What if a driver, say Sainz, loses the car on the curb, slides off the track, and hits the wall sideways? The airbag would still be coming from the front, I imagine - which wouldn't do any good at all.
Alright but i got one quastion left. What about the drivers neck? Airbags are also disinged to prevent the driver from tilting hes head to far forward because the seatbelt locks up hes body. The airbag will punch the head of the driver back preventing a wiplash.
it's similar to why school busses don't have seat belts. airbags work as part of the seat restraint system. SRS works in cars. we approach the problem with different systems to fit the situation. it's called compartmentalization

I know it is not the same thing but I remember in an animated movie the race car drivers would be encapsulated in hard rubber foam to keep them from being hurt when they got in a serious accident.
The BETTER QUESTION: Why does WRC not have a full faced helmet, HANS device, and airbags?! Compared to F1, they are on a much higher risk. Random huge rocks, random trees, random pole, crashing off a valley, and all the ridiculous things on WRC. Sure WRC isn't running as fast as F1, but those are just cars with roll cages. They aren't built as tough as F1 cars are.
They have a device similar to Hans, but since rally cars sometimes slide around ie. Hairpin turns, the drivers need to be able to turn their heads. They are strapped in with a six point harness so no body movement (or atleast very little) and the rollcages are extremely rigid. So no need for ones in those either, just excess weight
and again a deployed airbags in a still crashed rallycar could be very dangerous in multi cases (burning cars, drowing cars, rolled cars), and as allready said, a 6 point make airbags useless.
Another reason is the materials that the cars are made of. They are designed to crumple on impact, rather than just stopping instantly, so that they provide their own cushioning to the driver. It makes them fall apart more easily, but is a far safer method than anything else.

As such is the case, the F1 drivers are often going so fast and with such variation in their speed that, even if they were to move forward like in a standard car, they wouldn't catch the airbag on the deflate. The other thing to note, airbags and standard seatbelts may be safer than F1 harnesses because they allow movement, and the airbags in particular decelerate the driver gradually. It is possible to be strapped in so tight that, even if the F1 driver doesn't hit anything extraneous, his internal hard organs can rupture against the abdominal wall from the high speed impact (deceleration g's) or internal organs can lacerate or tear themselves from/on suspensory ligaments. Then again, racing harness do prevent displacement of the driver, which is also a large risk, and the cars are designed to break apart to dissipate the forces.
I saw on another channel he explains f1 g forces and stuff and says sometimes g forces can measure 48 g sometimes if I remember correctly and that would probably trigger the airbags
