Great video, I do want to add a note about the switch on the Yamaha YEV 105...it is NOT a mute switch (unless you have the volume control all the way down), It is either FULL volume (bypasses the volume control) when the switch is in the UP position, or it is a volume "Enabler" in the down position. In the down position, the volume control acts normally. In the UP position, the volume control does not work, but the volume is MAX. This is tricky but effective.

I have YEV 104 and same Yamaha amplifier. But I was not able to adjust the amplifier to get good sound to play Carnatic Music. Do you mind posting the knobs adjustment picture what you have setup on amplifier? Just I am beginner. 😢
I've had an NS Wav for about a year and absolutely love it. It is quite a bit heavier than an acoustic, and I had to tweak the shoulder rest height to get comfortable with it. It has a great tone. I don't have the clicking bow change issue you mentioned at all. I think this is due to long term playing on it, and I've naturally developed my bowing to the instrument. It has such a gorgeous tone both amplified and off amplifier. The "silent" play was the main reason I went electric, but my husband says he can still hear it two rooms away. At least it doesn't overwhelm and my neighbors can't hear it 😀 Great comparison on two nice violins.
I’m looking to get the NS WAV4. I’m a beginner and want something that is quiet. Maybe I won’t be so self-conscious when I’m practicing. I have an acoustic right now and it’s hard to stay motivated when everyone points out all the mistakes I’m making.
@@qltygrl3187 you'll really enjoy it. If you do intend to play in situations where you will need the acoustic be sure to include it in your weekly practice schedule. I find after a year of playing exclusively electric my acoustic sounds extremely loud under my ear. Happy playing ❤🎻🎶
I love my NS WAV ... I like the unique design, I love it’s sound over the bright one any day of the week, works fantastic with multi effects processors, tunes super easy and stays in tune for a long time! If I have one thing I don’t like, it’s the shoulder rest system, because mine is still the old wav, it’s hard to really tighten it properly.. but otherwise I’m happy, had it for years, works well, would love to upgrade to a NXTa some time though

My understanding is that the 5-string Yamaha fits in a viola case, and the 4-string fits in a violin case, and that at least with the 4-string, you can use a Kun 4/4 shoulder rest just fine. The one edge the NS might have is the neat tuning system, but you could always put Knilling Perfection Pegs on the Yamaha.

I trust in Ned's skill to solve design problems, and to be fair to NS Designs which I see as a company highly dedicated to the evolution of stringed instruments by taking advantage of going electric rather than building instruments that play and sound exactly like their acoustic counterpart I've added this link. Note: re the NS design instrument, the "thudding" that you're hearing on the NS design violin can likely be eliminated with an appropriate high-pass filter, which (I'd assume) is built-in to the yamaha instrument. (I.e. the NS design gives you everything and leaves it up to you to reshape the sound afterwards.)
I wasn't sure neither, I played 4-strings for decades. 6 months ago I got me 5-string violin (not these but Reiter's), and have adopted it quite quickly. I would say a quality 5-string set helped me a lot to get used to it.
Great demo, seriously you just sold the NS to me, (at 6:52) you mentioned Jean Luc Ponty sound, that's exactly what I was looking for. In 1990 I had waited 1 hour after JLP's concert to get his autograph on a violin, I am still kicking myself today, I sold that violin.
The bow change pop is what I've experienced with wireless units - even on my Barcus acoustic, which is the ultimate in a clean and gutty sounding Acoustic/Electric violin. I bought the Yamaha because I liked the design, but I'm so glad I didn't even try one of the NS models. That popping would have driven me insane! Thanks for pointing that out.
Hi, I have the ns nxt violin. The bow clicking is also there. But it change with the bow. My carbondix clicks very heareble but the woodbow clicks not so hard. And the cable! If you change the cable you can kill the clicking. The loudest clicking I have is with a 0.5 m cable on a wireless transmitter.
Thanks for the review! It helped me decide on the NS for myself, I wanted something that sounded good, but definitely not acoustic. It helped I also have a Yamaha THR for one of my amps, and it really represented what I am getting for sound out of mine too.
The YEV-105 is designed to play like a Traditional Acoustic Violin cause 1) it takes a Standard Shoulder rest & 2) the body shape is actually a special variation of the Traditional Acoustic Violin shape.

Dude I love that bow hold! I went to go get my bow and put my hands like I normally hold the bow, but on the rubber padding, almost like it's there for that purpose haha!
My son's violin teacher especially told us don't hold it like that. It's mainly for Irish music because you need a lot of short movement and it's mainly using upper part of the bow. To keep it more balanced for sure like his way is much better . But for classic music better not.
@@chenchen1788 Yeah....you're absolutely right, it's used for Irish Folk tunes primarily, but for classical you need longer strokes of the bow in which is achieved by a lower bow hold. This type of hold is never used outside of Irish Folk tunes!
Good comparison. Those new machine pegs might work great for you on the Yamaha. Many makers make them now. I use Pegheds, but if you choose them, be sure you have tools and have handyman experience.

I bought one which had the exact damage to the bout as thus one. After 2 weeks it developed an electronic issue as it just cut out after a few minutes playing. Mine is made in India and I think QC is a BIG issue.

Now I have a cheap second hand Stagg violin for experimentation and fun in bands. It's a good way to get experience before getting a better one. Thanks to your thoughts and experience I also think the Yamaha will be the best choice.
I have a Wave 5. I turned the shoulder rest around backwards. The tone control actually works. If I were you I would get a 90 degree cable and a 100 watt half stack. Have you ever heard of Geoffrey Castle? He's from Seattle and he does Celtic fiddle.

I think changing strings, and type of bows could tweak the click out of the NS design. I like the features on the NS WAV. The tuning system, chin and shoulder rest set up is cool. And I hate bright fiddles so the Yamaha is out. I'm interested enough in the NS WAV that I might buy one. Thanks for showing both.
The NS is "crafted in India" according to the web site. The Yamaha factories in China or anywhere else have very high quality control standards. In don't know about the NS factory if it comes with broken parts... I am ready to pay more to get Yamaha quality!
THe NSD W5 is a violin sounding gizmo that would never fit a case so they must provide you with one. However the YEV out classes anything out there in beauty and looks/craftsmanship. I would never consider a 5th string. But DUDE! What the hell kind of bow hold is that? It is impossible not to touch the hair and get body oils on it and then rosin will not stick to it getting splotchy sound.

Yamaha YEV 105 5 strings or 4 strings? I have never played with 5 strings and worried the fingerboard will feel too thick, not sure..
YEV 105 is 5 strings and YEV 104 is 4 strings

Nxt is a newer model than wav, so does that mean its not an old technology problem? Have u tried using a smaller 4 port behinger mixer to cut it out?
When you bought these violins was the case included or did you have to buy that separately?

Deciding factor for me was one is made in china and the other India. My NS Design came with a case. The Yamaha comes in a cardboard box.
