Electric Violin Effects for Beginners - Tutorial by Nina D on Yamaha YEV 105

- This video is a mini-tutorial that I recorded for Yamaha which was presented to educators at ASTA.
The goal of this tutorial was to show teachers how to start from square one with introducing electric string instruments with effects pedals to the classroom. It is also a starting point for beginners to learn more about the options they have to use effects on their electric violin.
I detail three options for effects; amp only, amp + stomp boxes, and a multi-effects processor (Line 6 Helix).
I proudly endorse Yamaha Strings, and also regularly perform on the Line 6 Helix and Native software.
Also demoed in this video are stomp boxes by Boss, Digitech Whammy, Vox wah, Pog 2, and Fender Super Champ amp.

I’m a lifelong classically-trained violist looking to go electric. Pedal boards & amps are so complex they are quite intimidating to a noob like me. This was very, very helpful.

Yamaha designed their Electric Bowed instruments to feel more like their Acoustic Counterparts so that switching between the 2 instruments is easier. The 5 string version gives you more notes you can play & I did find some Baroque sonatas written for it on IMSLP.
That's amazing, that there are Baroque sonatas for a 5-String violin. It's like finding out that Sor wrote etudes for four-string guitar.
Bobby Hicks plays the 5 String Violin. One Yamaha artist proved that you can play Classical Music on an Electric Bowed instrument by playing Pachabel's Canon in D on a 5 String Yamaha Violin w/ a Looping Pedal.

This is fantastic Nina, My daughter and I are Viola players. She came home this weekend for the Holiday and was very excited to see her bring out her Viola and play. She said she won’t take it back home because she wouldn’t want anyone to hear her at her apartment 😂. I was speaking about this for her along with a basic effect unit for silent practice. Love this and am glad you spoke highly of this instrument.

Thanks for this. I don't play violin but I use violin often in my compositions via midi. I am a big fan of Eddie Jobson (and now Nina D as well, 'cause you iz one badass woman fiddler). I've lusted after Eddie's tone since forever. This vid gave me some definite in roads towards achieving a Jobsonesque tone. Oh, and the chorus on that little Fender is VERY VERY sweet! Cheers

Starting on an Electric Bowed instrument is actually possible now thanks to Yamaha's Electric String ensemble.

If you had actually watched the video, you’d have seen that it began using only an amp for effects, and progressed upwards from there. 🙄
Hi Nina, thank you very much. Do you have any experience (or even know of others' experience) with bridge fitting and/or replacement on the YEV 5 string? I've been teaching orchestra in public schools for nine years, and have found that bridges last for years but do need occasional adjustment and eventual straightening or replacement. I do like that 105, and might purchase one. I've been playing guitar for almost 50 years, and have pedals, but have not yet played an amplified violin. Your lesson is inspiring to me. It's also extremely well organized and presented. Again, thank you!
You can adjust the bridge's placement on your own by loosening the strings, but in terms of shaping it, you'd need to see a luthier. The Electric Violin Shop based in NC also repairs and sets up electric violins.
You can purchase replacement bridges, though the YEV bridges have been pretty reliable for me. Just like on an acoustic, if they move, you have to adjust them.

With a Helix, you can load an impulse response of your (or any other) real violin.

Hey Nina. Great video! It was both very informative and highly entertaining. You really nail the solos. I enjoy listening to and watching your other videos as well. I am a violinist who is intending to purchase an electric violin, likely a passive version. How important is having a pre-amp in the chain?
Hi Dan, I´m not Nina, but an expirienced E-Vio-Player. The preamp is extremely important to match impedance. It MUST have at least 1Mohm and I recommend to connect it with a cable of max. 1.5m length. Fishman offers a nice beltpack preamp. It is also possible to use a wireless sender as preamp, but have an eye on the impedance.
It really depends on your rig and the board you are playing into. I have never had the need to purchase a separate preamp for my chain. I have performed largely on the Yamaha EV and YEV models, and I bypass the battery in the EV setup when I use it, and the YEV is passive. The effects Boards that I use already have preamp capability, and even when we have to go direct into the board, we are using an X32 or M32 which have preamp capabilities for each channel. I have only used the stompbox rig when I also use an amp, any time I am going direct, I’m using a multi effects rig. One thing we do run into, as we are mostly wireless, is needing to turn DOWN the gain on the wireless packs. When set for a guitar or bass, they are way too hot for an electric violin and distort the sound. So, the problem is with too much output. It’s not just a little, we turn them WAY down in order to achieve a clean sound. Again, I think it just depends on your instrument and the rest of your rig.

I would think your phone should be ringing off the hook due to the $$$ and expense the studios would save instead of having to hire a 50 piece string section!😀. Hello Nina. I absolutely agree with each of your words. It's impressive, because you are a violonist looking at the electric guitarists and I am an electric guitarist looking at the techniques and expression of the acoustic violonists. Truth in music is probably between those two ways of playing. Everyday I have been using Boss multiple effects Chorus, Delay, Overdrive and Fender amp. Almost the same sound chain. But whatever the material we have been using Yamaha, Boss, Fender, Marshall ..., the most important in music is expression. Don't you think? Thanks. Excuse for my english, I am a french guy. Nina, that was super instructional, just wondering, can this be achieved on a regular violin with a pickup - would the pedals sound the same? Thanks in advance!
When you play with a pickup on a hollow bodied violin and add distortion, you can easily have feedback problems that are hard to control. You can, but it’s not the best way to achieve these effects.
Thank you, I was looking more into wah than distortion but I guess that can happen with any effect/pedal.

The Yamaha YEV model is affordable, shaped like an acoustic, and good pro quality.

I use the Kun shoulder rest, but I do not like the newer models. I have one of the vintage older models circa the 1990s.

Hi Nina, you mentioned you used some Zoom pedals and I can only assume that they're the G1x Four or the A1x Four. Which of these do you use and which would you recommend for someone looking for their first multi-FX pedal?
I used to use the Zoom Gx3- though if you can manage it, the Helix stomp is a top notch multi effects pedal at a lower price point than the big Helix board.

I think you should try midi that would be the next step up.
Midi is pretty wonky with a bowed instrument.

Hey Nina! I just bought a Yamaha YEV 104 and whenever I play live I only get a very weak sound...would you reccommend me to buy a pedal that "filters" the violin plugged to the sound console, which goes directly to the speakers? Thank you so much
You need a piezo premap. The YEV range do not have preamps built in.
Which console are you using? It may already have a preamp you can use. I always play any electric violin through a multi effects pedal when going direct as there is usually already a preamp in there. You can even get a cheap one with those capabilities.
@@NinaDiGregorio It's an old ProFX mixing desk with 8 channels...it probably has 3/4 effects that I barely use.

How do you load your effects patches onto the Line 6???
I usually create them in Helix Native in Logic and then synch them up.
This is amazing! I have to ask though can you use violin like bass or is it more like guitar....allow me explain so with a bass you can get by with pretty much a di box as well as with acoustic guitar but, you pretty much want some kind of amp whether real or in a effect or software for an electric guitar. I ask this because this could mean even less gear needed as well as you talked about how trying to fix a traditional pedal board can be complex in the moment of a live performance but, I have to add this could be a advantage and a disadvantage because would I be right in saying depending on what stomp box goes out you could just remove it from the chain and still make due for the show or even that patch cable once you do find the issue were is something like a all in one stomp box like your line 6 if it goes out then it could potentially all go out at once right ? So unless you have two on hand there is risk for putting all your eggs in one basic sort of speak. Same with the software on a computer if the computer goes down you would need another computer standing by. The same could be said for a traditional amp how ever this could be were the DI box comes in making having 2 on hand rather cheap if you can even do that with a violin because my thinking is you could just use stomp boxes and a dI box and well I don't think this is the most reliable as more things can go wrong I do think in its basic form this kind of set up would be the one that would allow you to end your show after fixing the said issue were is if your line 6 goes out I'm not sure what you do at that point. There is a Three Days Grace rig rundown that shows how they zip tie every patch cord down or tape them so they don't move there for making it less likely for them to break over time and I think this kind of set up could make for a more reliable traditional board that could come a little closer to the reliability of your multi effect board and in the event they do break just pop in another patch cord till you have time to fix it after the show. A stand alone Di is not to much but, in the event this does not work well it will be more money something like a tech 21 sans amp I would think would have to work because its a amp for guitar and di built into one. I'm only a guitar player so tell me if I'm wrong I don't want to lead people the wrong way but, I think this could mean a even more cost effective or maybe a means for someone to use stomp boxes with out a amp so they don't get that mic sound you were talking about and not have to bring a amp around. Great video and your playing is amazing Nina. You are also playing the kind of violin that I want to get but, thinking i'm going to get the 4 string model. Part of me wants to get the 5 sting but, I know the stings will be more money and on top of this I play 7 string guitar so having more strings I don't think is an issue for me but, another part of me thinks it might be a better idea to start on a traditional violin being 4 sting since I would be new to the violin despite my guitar experience.
I have had every issue known to man arise with gear when performing tour dates. By far, the most reliable form of gear I own for high-end shows is the Line 6 Helix/Stomp multi effects setup. When our gear gets lost by an airline, we improvise with whatever we can get backlined locally (amps, processors, stomp boxes). We do travel with 4 processors in our show, so if the V1 goes out, one of the others would sacrifice theirs. This happened in the past with our old Vox Tonelab SE (which sound great, but don't travel well). Proper gear cases and protection are a must, as well as regularly checking your gear and repairing as necessary when not on the road.

You don’t typically see left handed violins as you’d hit your stand partner in the face. Lefties all play regular violins. But I’m sure in a solo setting, someone has made one.
@@NinaDiGregorio Though I appreciate your taking the time to reply, I will add that I'm more than insulted as I'm sure many left-handers would be. To use the world "regular" implies that left-hand people would need an irregular violin.
Same goes for guitars. When I found a model Gibson that I like, they stopped making a left version of it for about 3 years. But at least I find them from time to time. Violins on the other hand seems to be an industry of ignorance and it can be rather frustrating.
And I doubt ALL lefties play what you call regular violins. I am sure there was a time when men believed that ALL women wanted to be barefoot, pregnant, and want to stay at home and have dinner on the table by 6pm when their man got home from work.
Yes, all lefty classical violin players play right handed violins. I’m not trying to insult you, it’s a fact. Guitar players don’t need to sit with 50 other guitar players and share music stands, so it doesn’t really matter. Violinists, violists, and cellists, en masse, are trained to play in a large section, thus the expectation that they all learn right handed. It’s not a prejudice, it’s a logistical fact.
@@NinaDiGregorio I am not trying to be argumentative so don't think that of me. And I cannot say you are wrong in your assessment as to how many left-handed people play in groups as right handed. This is your area of expertise and you know what you know. I just think lefties love the instrument and as they embarked on learning they quickly found that if they wanted to play and be part of a group they 'must' learn to play right handed. And to me, that is ignorance. There is no way anyone can tell me that if conductors or the industry in generally wanted to arrange humans so that both left and right handers could play together that it could not be done. But at last, those in charge never wanted to or bother to try so from generations to generation we would told to fall inline and play as a righty. And that is how it seems to stand today.
As a kid it was next to impossible to find a pair of scissors for even a baseball glove for a lefty ....let alone spiral notebooks, which that one is still the same to this day. I recall one time I took golf lessons and on my first day the guy handed me two practice golf clubs ...for a right hand person. I then told him I was left handed so he went to his car and brought back two left hand clubs for me to use. Although he made an assumption at the beginning, in the end at least he was sorta kinda prepared.
My main points are these - no one speaks up for us. People just fall inline as they don't want to be bother as long as it doesn't effect them. Imagine if only brown people stood up for brown people or only women stood up for women, etc. There would be very little progress because if you were not actually part of that group then you would not care to make a change.
Anyway, again, I appreciate your taking the time to respond as I know you do not have to. You are a smart and talented individual and I respect you as a person. We don't always have to agree with each other so ...there's that. :)
