    Kroket is fried gravy? Nehhh 🙃 It is a ragout from flour, butter, bouillon, meat and vegetables, when cooled down rolled through flour, egg and breadcrumb. The Meat can be pork, beef or chicken, shrimps. The fillings can also differ from the standard potatokroket which is mostly eaten as a side, we know satekroket with chicken and satesauce filling, there is also a goulashkroket which tastes indeed like the goulash from Hungary. So no lol its not fried gravy 😘

    • @thernymous
      @thernymous 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Gravy doesn't only mean 'jus'. It can also refer to a ragout-like preparation. Look up: biscuits and gravy.

    • @DennyandNikki
      @DennyandNikki  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do think most Americans use the word 'gravy' when talking about a ragout. Denny didn't even know what ragout was, haha! Just a difference in language I guess! Thanks for your comment though! :)

    • @user-rf8mc8rg9v
      @user-rf8mc8rg9v 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DennyandNikki it’s not a ragout in a kroket. It’s called a salpicon.

    • @Pasunsoprano
      @Pasunsoprano 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we all make mistakes. Americans call something gravy which actually isn't gravy and the Italians don't know what we call Bolognaise sauce, because they call it ragu. What's in a kroket is more like a bechamel with beef or veal, which the Dutch call ragout, from the French, allthough the French themselves call it a salpicon or a blanc de veau.

    - Love the way you are so proud of your Dutch Heritage. It’s really great to show people you love where you came from.
    - The difference with Kibbelingen is indeed the sauce you can get something very similar abroad as well. It’s the sauce that stands out.
    - Love Frikandel and Kroketten. Especially the story behind the first one with all the the stuff that other people throw away
    - Tompouce very hard to eat lol

    I only buy the sausage (rookworst) at the butcher, not at the supermarket or HEMA. And for the dish endive with mashed potatoes (andijviestamppot), I bake bacon strips (magere spekreepjes) cut the endive and bake it shortly in the bacon fat and add the bacon and endive to the mashed potatoes. Bake the endive very shortly because it must stay crunchy. Add some mustard, pepper and salt if necessary, like you did. Because of the bacon, adding salt is hardly necessary.

    • @Iflie

      It's an interesting take on it as usually a herring will be quite "fishy" due to the special way they gut it before salting it. It's partially digested bu it's own digestive juices. But if you can handle the fishy taste it's not bad. It's softer than regular raw fish. My mom loved it but I'm not a fan but i also don't think it's horrible. You can also take more bites than just one big one, haha Maybe due to people loving sushi more people will come round to herring.

    I always use Unox rookworst and I think that tastes like they put bacon in it. Also if you use kale with your stampot, you have to boil it along with the potatoes as it needs a whole to soften and bring out the nice flavor. Though overcooking it is also not good,. I put fried lardons and it's fat in with the stampot. And poffertjes are traditionally made with some buckwheat flour, which you do not always find in modern ones, but that's what makes the flavor , buckwheat is a nutty sort of flour with lots of flavor. That's why it's good with just salted butter and sugar.

    • @DennyandNikki
      @DennyandNikki  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, Unox worst is definitely one of our favorites as well. Can't wait for the winter time again, so we can eat some more boerenkool!

    • @grammatikaat4329
      @grammatikaat4329 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      But put the potatoes underneath the kale after bringing it to boil or the kale will get chewy. Also, mix in something sour at the end for the same reason, like mustard, picalilly or just a little bit of vinegar.

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@grammatikaat4329 I often cook the kale separately too if I want to take the effort to get that exactly right as potatoes can cook at a different time depending on the type available. I never add anything sour but my mom would add a bit of vinigar at the table if she was in the mood. We always ate Aromat over it too (A yeast based salty powder that basically does what MSG does I think).

      @@DennyandNikki Actually that depends on the size of the fish. It's perfectly okay to bite off smaller chunks and in fact in Amsterdam they have a habit of cutting the fish in squares and sticking skewers in them. That kind of already tells that it is not the best herring around and adding onion will help mask the bitterness f this old or not properly handled herring. The good `maatjes-haring` should preferably be eaten without onions and I guess you were lucky to find a proper fishmonger that had the real deal.

    Harring isn't eaten with unions , in the old days they used unions on harring that wasn't so fresh enymore.

      Yep, indeed, onions, because back in the days the longer the herring was kept in the wooden barrel with salt, the saltier it tasted until it almost was inedible. The onions and pickles masked the salty taste a bit. Nowadays I just like the combination of herring with onions.

    Fituur is niet slecht hoor, Want je eet de snack en niet de fituurvet... Vis zit ook vol met vet, Maar is gewoon gezond. Denk dat een tompoes nog slechter is dan een frikandel en kroket.

    Herring tastes like sushi. No thanks, I prefer the sushi. But officially it should be eaten with raw white onion. Seeing all these delicious food I just called my travel agent for information when the next flight is leaving for Holland . lol. Tomorrow evening, but too bad, it is fully booked. (Joking)

      I'm also not going to eat the Herring... too afraid it's not going to taste like sushi! I'm sure watching our vlogs makes you miss Holland! I'd never thought I would miss it, until I moved away

      We do miss Hawaii but we are just traveling and seeing where it takes us right now. We saved up for a few years to do long term traveling. We are writing a blog post about it that will be available in a few weeks :)

    Sorry if mentioned before, the camera used in your current vlog needs to be adjusted.
    Looks over exposed.
    The skies are too washed white.
    The details are lost in Black
    Other than that, good to see y'all traveling. Congrats on getting married.
    Good to learn your culture.
    Your students must be envious or getting inspired.
