Saltatio Mortis never forgot where they came from. On the "70.000tons of Metal" cruise, they walked around the ship and played songs with four pipes. So they did at the "Full Metal Holidays" last year. They are not afraid of sitting around with the folks, drink a beer together while having some smalltalk. They are very close to their fans!

The song is an ancient Norse Skaldic song composed by Egil Skallagrímsson in the 8th century and transcribed from an oral saga in the 12th century. As mentioned by others, the lead singer is deeply involved in LARP, and all of the actors in the video are members of the LARP community. The words are Icelandic, which the singer learned just for this song. The video is based on Holmgang, the Norse method of settling disputes which involves formal combat between the two parties. How the dispute was settled was by mutual agreement, and might be with or without weapons and could be ended by capitulation, first blood, or death.
This song was featured in the Vikings TV show.

Nice! I like Saltatio, they combine rock with medieval influences like bagpipes… for this song the singer learned an ancient dialect from Iceland! If you liked this, check out The Dragonborn Comes… a duet with a superb female singer! Thanks, greetings from Germany 👍🤘

The Hurdy Gurdy the instrument that was originally used in Churches long before the invention of the Organ. Beautiful instrument.
Listen to Patty Gurdy. She uses and she has a gorgeous voice. The first song I heard her perform was called, "The Longing". The sounds of the hurdy gurdy by itself are sublime.

    Hey from Germany...
First of all: Saltatio Mortis is Latin and means “dance of death”.
The song is based on one of the successful "Assassin's Creed" PC game series called "Valhalla" which tells the story of Eivor.
Saltatio Mortiss is a medieval rock band formed in 2000 as a street band. The lead singer is Jörg Roth aka Alea the Modest. At the beginning you see him in a quarrel with the female Eivor.
Alea sings partly in Old Norse with lyrics that are between 800 and 1200 years old and were handed down verbatim from there.
Also worth watching is another video called "THe Dragonborn comes" feat. Lara Loft.
And secondly, a teamwork with another German medieval rock band called “Feuerschwanz”.
Be careful, don't translate the name literally, then it won't make any sense. In this case it is pronounced as “Foyer-Shwanz”.
The video is a cover called "Warriors of the world united".
This opens a huge, unexplored rabbit hole.....Have fun in it..
The strange instrument with the rotating crank is called the “Hurdygurdy”. It's a medieval hurdy-gurdy. Your strings are made to vibrate using the crank and a rotating bow.
You can find many explanations for this on the internet.

0:27 Saltatio Mortis (which is latin btw, not spanish) is a German Medieval Metal band.
Medieval Metal is a subgenre of Metal which originates from Germany. There are quite a few bands, including but not limited to Saltatio Mortis, Feuerschwanz, In Extremo, Subway to Sally...
    3:13 It's Old Norse.
    4:08 A Hurdy-Gurdy.
It is common for Medieval Metal bands to include instruments you'll usally not see all that often - many of them include instruments that where common in centuries past.
PS: If you like more medieval style music I highly recommend to check out the band Heilung. They only use handcrafted instruments that resemble their counterparts from the lade bronze and the viking age and try to recreate the music of those times. it's quite the experience.
PPS: If you want more Saltatio Mortis I recommend their song Pray to the Hunter, a song written for Elder Scrolls Online.

much as Scotland is particularly known for bagpipes, there are variations on the bagpipe all the way from Ireland to India and all the way down into north Africa- in this case, I believe they are using a German variety

    • @salomewild6612
      @salomewild6612 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

they are using many types of bagpipes, especially ElSi plays also Uillean-Pipes from Ireland and Great Highland Pipes, but mostly they play some "German Bagpipes" which were developed mostly in DDR...they are not as historic as they seem...the medieval Bagpipes around middle Europe mostly were like the ones we know as "Schäferpfeifen" or "Hümmelchen" nowadays.
the DDR-Guys just made them "loud and big"...

  • @Wanys123

The song is from Egil's Saga - a 13th century Icelandic saga(long form epic poem)
The chorus is modern english translation that was used in Vikings TV show or in Assasin's creed:Valhalla videogame.
The verses are the same song/poem in original Old Norse.
Saltatio Mortis are German lads... the singer does Tai Chi and Kung Fu and used to do that on streams of the dojo he was part of. He is also an avid nerd and cosplayer(his partner does that for living... she plays a minor role in the video - the entourage of the main female character... and because they are both ginger I forgot which one, I think the one to the left hand of the main woman at 1:48 ).
And the video shows a ritual Holmgang - a fight to settle disputes. Originally to the death, later on more "civilized" version would be to some agreed upon terms, usually first blood drawn.
iirc they rented out that viking village and just had a blast with friends shooting the video... the "actors" were for the most part like reenactors, cosplayers and their friends.

Saltatio Mortis is Latin and means dance of the dead. Since Spanish is derived from Latin, Spanish is not entirely wrong.
The text is in Old Norse = Viking language. Norway as one of the Vikings' countries of origin is not entirely wrong.
The oldest depiction of a bagpipe is in Turkey and is over 3000 years old, but only in Scotland are they part of the national identity. In addition to Europe, they are also found in the Middle East, North Africa and India, in different variations.
The hurdy-gurdy (the crank thing) originated in Spain in the 10th century AD and from there spread throughout Europe. The most popular variant is a French one from the 18th century. Patty can explain to you how it works:
How EXACTLY does the hurdy gurdy work?
And this is how Patty sounds live:
Patty Gurdy - "Run" Live @WGT2022
The filming location is a LARP village. The actors in the video spend their free time there and they wear their own costumes. There's another video they filmed there:
Saltatio Mortis - Pray To The Hunter feat. “The Elder Scrolls Online” (Official Video)

Saltatio Mortis is German, this song is in English and and ancient Icelandic dialect (Alea had training to pronouce it correctly). The Song is almost 900 years old and comes from Viking Eddas. (not in English, obviously) but has been used in the Vikings TV series as well as Assassin's Creed Valhalla. The Instrument you don't know is a Drehleyer (or Hurdy Gurdy), it works on the same principle as a violin except the crank turns a wheel instead of using a bow and the keys press down on the fretboard inside the instrument.
You really should look at their latest video, Finsterwacht, it's long but so worth it

(Sal-TAH-ti-oh, not Sal-ta-TI-o if you want to be more on spot with the pronunciation. Bagpipes are centuries older than the cliche Scottish instrument and feature a wide range of various pipes from the tiny hummelchen, a small pipe with one drone, to the huge multi-drone ones. )

To Lulu back in approximately 1000 ad the Vikings went to the UK which was under Roman then who also dealt with the pikes which we now know as Scotland
To Kathy the vikings originally Scandinavia (present-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden), who from the late 8th to the late 11th centuries raided, pirated, traded and settled throughout parts of Europe. And also are actually credited for discovering America in 985 ad est. and not Christopher Columbus.
