You're right. This demonstration was completely motion captured and voice recorded, rehearsed with the actress and that's what we saw. No procedural animation, no AI voice. Nothing mind boggling. It's really only a demonstration of the concept, of what could sort of be possible with "Natal". Voice, face, pose, emotion and print recognition is certainly possible and I wouldn't doubt Natal is capable of that, but the whole idea they're trying to sell, is sofar a big fat lie.

I get the feeling that the developers knew that this project could never happen. It would be impossible to program MIlo and do the voice acting to account for all the emotions, topics, and actions involved with this sort of concept. At this point, no video game has ever come close to genuine interaction with a human, and unless some miracle happens, no game will for a while. I think they made this game to show off and to make us excited for what Kinect could deliver (even though it can't).
I feel like something like Milo could possibly be done today, but it would be very limited, it would most likely not pass the turning test. It would be like if Alexa or Siri had a 3d model to go along with it.
I think that this could be the best part of Natal. Imagine a game like Fallout, with a standard Controller, but when you talk to characters you can say anything that you want and they will respond. Complex games, but they could be amazing.

I'll be extremely impressed if this is anywhere close to accurately portrayed, Microsoft will have had to invest like $1b into this technology.
