This song closed out the final episode of Dexter New Blood and it’s use was absolutely breathtaking.
The moment I heard the guitar playing I whipped out Shazam to find the name of the song, and when I saw it was a song by The Nationals, I knew the series was ending off with a good song.
It made me understand it better

I used to think that Johnny Cash was able to describe every situation that my life had ended up at. Nerp, The National filled in a few gaps. Smiley face and then some sad faces which are tearful happy faces.

I didn't like this song at all the first few times I listened to the album. However, now it's one of my favorites on the album. I read that Scott Devendorf sees this song as a meditative entrace to the album. The chord change when they shift to the "I should live in salt for leaving you" line is beyond brilliant.

These guys are the best band on the planet. Imho. It may take a while to get into them, but once they've established that intravenous line to your soul, there's no escape. No one else comes close.

then simply 4/4 or 8/8.
The chorus actually has a 9/8 bar every fourth measure: it's 4/4 - 4/4 - 4/4 - 9/8

Well, so do many other songs. The original "song" is Canon in D by Pachebel and other songs with similar progression are e.g. "Pet Shop Boys - Go West", "The Eagles - Hotel California" and "Green Day - Basket Case" =)
