      I’m disappointed, I wanted to see HOW they managed to accomplish these standards; what the used to build these LEED standard buildings and services in the middle of a desert.

    When you look, and marvel, at what Dubai's visionary leaders have achieved, by using wealth wisely. It makes you wonder how much similar wealth is being utterly squandered in some other oil rich nations. Imagine an Iraq, Iran or for that matter Russia ran on similar lines...it is tragic for their people that they are not.

  • @pinkelephants1421
    @pinkelephants1421 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    If Dubai were to collect & compost all its food and human waste, this would produce a reliable supply of organic matter to reclaim the desert using permaculture design principles and reduce emissions from food importation whilst promoting food self-reliance. As the desert reclamation process expands & matures, temperatures in the emirate would reduce in tandem with lower cooling requirements and thus lower energy capacity requirements.
    Would love to see an update on progress & future plans.

    It's the effort that counts. At least, Dubai has started. Now, they need to reach out and convince their much bigger and overshadowing neighbor, to seize fire, stop expansion and also concentrate on sustainability. At the end, we don't just need a GREEN DUBAI, but a green planet.

    Whilst I take my hat off to these wonderful achievements, theres still an overriding factor that concerns me deeply. The water supply to this ever expanding city must be staggering in volume. Obviously desalination will be on an unprecedented scale, the likes of which we have never seen before. This is what concerns me the most. As we are all aware, there are significant by-products in the process of reverse, osmosis which invariably dumped out to sea. That being the case, what effect will it have on the eco system by 2030 or even sooner.
    The tides within the Persian Gulf are not very strong, in fact they only oscillate from the point where it meets the Straits of Hormuz. This in itself creates problems.
    I really do dread to think that by 2030 the whole of the Gulf will be irreversibly dead, speaking of which the UAE could then boast about their own Dead Sea.
    I sincerely hope I'm wrong, I really do.

    There has to be some amount of irony in the "Green Dubai" campaign when you see so many manicured green grassy spaces in and around the city. There's nothing "green" about that.... Wasteful of resources. It's a desert. Embracing that is the easiest step toward conservation.

    I'm all for planting more plants but, they should be planting NATIVE plants that are able to withstand that climate without huge amounts of water. Desalinizing water and all the energy it takes completely negate the positives of planting greenery. I saw multiple tropical plants which will require huge amounts of water. And GREEN LAWNS! Such a waste.

    What most of the people in the comments do not seem to realise, is that all these people know that oil will run out, but instead of trying to squeeze every last cent of it, they are investing the money into alternative sources of energy. With how much sun and wind they get, mark my words, one day, they will start exporting electricity. And the jealousy will start all over again.

    It would be interesting to know if Dubai has or is about to switch to electric buses. For a municipality, full EV buses is a no brainer. Especially in a region that has as much sun as they do. Solar power plus battery storage, effectively equates to near zero running costs. Higher upfront costs but that's recouped in about 2&1/2 to 5 years &, because there's almost zero wear & tear, fully EV buses last much, much longer.
