    I'm strongly opposed to fake battle vests but I understand their existence. Unfortunately metal fashion has become trendy in recent years; celebrities wear metal band shirts, pop and rap artists have made metal style merch and lots of people wear shirts from bands like Metallica and Iron Maiden without listening to them. It seems that fake battle vests are just a by-product of this trend. Although these people still don't like the music and won't associate themselves with it, they adopt the fashion as an edgy accessory.

    • @omegaXXIV
      @omegaXXIV 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I agree. Sometimes I'm not too thrilled with this trend but other times I like how they think the metal style is cool so they imitate it. Maybe they don't like the music, but there's at least something about the scene that they like.
      BTW, I like your screen name and your avatar.

    • @Hellboy-ge6po
      @Hellboy-ge6po 7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      +omegaXXIV I personally have a more negative view of this trend because it's really just the mainstream adopting certain aspects of the style while there is still a stigma against the music itself. I especially dislike it when people wear shirts of bands they don't listen to because band merch is supposed to show people that you're a fan of a band but now they're being worn by people who would never associate themselves with the bands whose merch they're wearing. Thanks for the compliment about my screen name and avatar BTW, I honestly expected a negative reaction to it when I picked it but thankfully that hasn't happened lol.

    What annoys me is when stores like Forever 21 take jackets and stuff and sew random patches on them with metal font in an effort to look trendy. I was in the mall a while ago and I stopped in there and saw this jacket with a bunch of patches that looked like they were of bands and that sort of thing- but when I looked closer, it was just cities and shit- San Francisco was written in Metallica's stylization, New York was written like AC/DC, and a bunch of other stuff like that.

    One thing that will always piss me off is fake battlejackets/vests and pre made battlejackets/vests. Annoys me beyond belief, my battlejacket has been something I have worked on for four, nearly five years now. Talking like £300/£400 worth of patches, badges etc and me being blind in one eye and visually impaired in the other and suffering from arthritis I literally had to teach myself how to sew despite struggling to see and feel what I was doing. A lot of time and blood went into it and then you get bellends buying pre made ones and shitty companies who shit on metal making fake ones for a quick cash grab?

    On one of my vests I have more than just metal patches. I have some hip hop pins and patches mixed amongst some punk patches, even movie, or pop culture references. I find myself choosing to wear it more often than my full metal jackets because I feel like it expresses a lot more of my personality and my interests. I’ve gotten a strange look or two from other metal heads tho. I think they are debating if it’s a fake vest or what. I get it though. Seeing Ghost or behemoth patches next to suicidal tendencies, brand new, Kanye, mf doom, or parkway drive patches isn’t something you see everyday. Typically most of the bands are from the same genre or at least similar. But I wanted a jacket that truly showed what I care about and I think it’s pretty sick.

    • @pietrayday9915
      @pietrayday9915 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think that in my time among both metal and punk fans, I've only seen one completely DIY battlevest - the poor fellow who made it had copied the cover from Voivod's "War and Pain" album, and, though I'd definitely give him an 'A' for Effort, he was no Away....
      I'm like the guy in the video: I could sympathize if you physically couldn't sew your own commercial patches onto your own commercial jacket, and I can equally sympathize when most folks really couldn't sew up their own totally home-made copies of elaborate band logos and cover art.
      At least with the commercial, official merchandise patches, you're paying your favorite bands a little extra money... I'm sure no realist ever joined a punk or metal band seriously expecting to make a lot of money doing it, but I'm sure both punk and metal musicians would appreciate a little extra income to pay the bills with, especially in a world where even well-known punk and metal musicians have to keep their day jobs to make ends meet.
      With these $400+ "fake" battle-jackets with fake patches, I'd guess the only folks getting paid are Hot Topic and a couple sweat shops somewhere in Honduras or the Philippines....

    I've never seen or heard of fake vests, I actually thought this was gonna be some snobby dig at vests with patches for bands you haven't seen in concert.
    I got told mine was fake because I hadn't seen half of the bands stitched on. I just wanted to show off all the bands I love, I listened to all their songs and at the time I was actually really nervous about going to shows plus I couldn't afford to travel to shows. how is that not real?

    • @fatmetalheadnerd4376
      @fatmetalheadnerd4376 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know this comment is five years old but I just want to say that the whole "You have to seen the band live to put their patch on your vest" thing is complete horse shit. Metal bands aren't always super popular and a lot of metalheads live in places where metal bands never come through. So it would take a lot of money and enough free time to travel to go see every band that you want to put a patch on your vest.
      So in other words you have to have quite a bit of money to throw around in order to have seen every band live that you have a patch of. And battle vests should not be a contest of how much money you have. There's nothing metal at all about that. Not to even mention the fact that a lot of the older bands can't even be seen live anymore because they're not even together anymore or their main members have passed away.
      The only thing that matters when putting a patch on your vest is that you love their music or that you're a fan of them. That's it.
      Fuck that "you need to have seen them live" elitist bullshit. It's stupid as hell and anyone who believes that is the real poser.

      You do you dude...my spike and stud covered vest has the sleeves cut at an angle to give it more of a "my shoulders are wide as fuck and I need the extra width" look, cuz they are and I do lol...I've seen vests cut so severe they look like tank tops, sleeves just ripped off all ratty, nasty and badass, and yes...sleeves just left in place too, though you're right, technically that's a battle jacket! • @johanbatcron1206
    @johanbatcron1206 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    ... and i think your assumptions of my answers to those questions are very accurate. There is absolutely no defense to sell or own a "fake patched vest". And to ask someone else to sew on the patches for you is absurd, and i believe that is for the same reasosn that you explained (part of the journey, part of what makes it unique and "yours" etc.).
    I had absolutely no idea how to sew when i started mine, but i looked it up and then kind of improvised as i went along. As frustrating it was at the points when i messed up, i don't regret any of that today since that really added to the experience and to the accomplishmet to when i finally got it right. I could also add that i refuse to re-sew the first patches even if i messed up alittle. The reason is because those mistakes are a part of the journey. I can look at those mistakes and say, "hey here's the first i ever sew" and then look at the other patches and really see how my vest and skill has improved over time.
    To wear a vest like this is a very meaningful thing and a sign of a deep passion, therefore i believe that you need to "earn the right" to wear it. In my book, you earn the right by spending the time, energy, dedication and maybe even sweat and blood to actually make it.
    ok this quickly became a long ass comment, so i'll stop here i guess.

      To me, it's fine to buy merchandise and music online, especially in a global information age when many of your favorite bands are likely to be small foreign bands who never play shows outside their own country, or sometimes bands who never actually play live at all. I do try to get merchandise at the shows when I see them live - it's where the bands actually make their money, especially in an age of easy digital piracy, but sometimes that just doesn't work, and sometimes I just can't see my favorite bands live - so what else can you do?

      Mermaid Man That doesn't make his point any less valid, no matter what genre of music you listen to, say you have a jacket and just happen to listen to rap and have rap patches and whatever on it, it's the same idea just a different genre but he's saying he just doesn't like clothing with patches is all, I'd happily attach a big ass Spiderman logo on the back of my jacket but I can see why a lot of people wouldn't like something like that. No reason to attack their music taste that's why metal heads get shit on all the time. 🤷

      For me that's part of the point. For example I wear gaming and band shirts not only to represent what I love but also as a conversation starter. My backpack already has pins and patches for gaming on it, so when I found that there was a similar trend in the metal community, I got excited. I like meeting cool people out in public.

    • @billghli
      @billghli 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bunker Sieben Yeah, it doesn't have to be a metal elitist thing, just an extension of you as an individual which is awesome, love who you are and show it off, as long as it's not a standard "trendy" piece it's cool because that's always boring for stuff like this, slap that gaming/music/art patch on and you're all good! Or in your case, switch between your genres! ✌ Thanks for agreeing!
