Love these short, easy, and straight to the point videos you guys do on architecture lol, I find them fascinating! Although one question does arise for me and that is how do you size the thickness of your chain in proportion to your model? When doing the “chain test”? Won’t the thickness of the chain greatly affect if it “fits” in the arch of the model? Just something I was trying to understand, when making a model.
1:56 reminds me of Sheldon's fun with flags wity penny😂😁 Keeping jokes aside I am really happy that i found this channel as an engineering student from the different side of the world where the education system doesn't focus much on explaining but more focused on marks we were able to score
I found this channel yesterday and I loved it s2 You are amazing guys. I want to see all of your videos, but I have to work now ;-; haha Really really good. Hello from Brazil!
does anyone know the assistant instagram, she's kinda cute, just standing there, helping, but not saying anything (according to the credits her name is Zi Yang)

Didn't builders used to use hanging chains / ropes to figure out arches and forces in their buildings? I remember a photo of Gaudí next to an upside down rope representation of part of the Sagrada Familia.
This is a genuinely informative, cool, and punchy video. Yet that prof is employing such a stilted, deliberate manner of speaking, that he makes me laugh. I think he is trying to project a detached, scientific, professional demeanour as he delivers some truly cool and impressive demos about arches and chains. His artificial nonchalance is distracting, and I believe that inside himself, he still feels that sense of "wow" and "how cool is engineering when it all works!"
The girl on the left is sooo interesting, idk why, but she look like smart nerd and some internet troll at the same time. Please don't lynch me in comments.
1:30 26 seconds of silence
1:56 "Isn't that cool?"
Nice simplistic production, no unnecessary music or repeated conversation to fill the gap :D
it's not silence
they're working
Did you watchen the video , or just listen to it

Fun with Arches .. why it sounds like another Sheldon's web series?
would that be Amy Farrah Fraw-ler next to him?
This is exactly what I was thinking.

Thank you for the videos you produce. You’re doing a great service for the engineering students all over the world. God bless you all.
Damn I feel ashamed haha, I'm doing a PhD in mechanics-related stuff and I had no idea about this chain rule. It's really beatiful too.
This was actually pretty informative and fun!
Reviewing right now for my board exam and your videos are really entertaining. Simple yet educational. Thank you!!!

It is indeed.
Lol
Just when I thought this channel couldn't get any better.
Boom! Cute girl with arches!
" Thanks for watching" so cute~~ awesome video! always amazed with arch structures!
Wow amazing, not a lot of videos on civil structures on youtube.
Thank you very much for making such videos and keep up
I’m glad if u recommend some other TH-cam channels like this !! It’s interesting.

this... this is the best channel on youtube, omg great job. I noticed no new videos have been made in a year, hope you're okay!
Amazing content, and the reading is so natural

Great video. Thanks from Belgium
In my next life (if there is one) I am going to be an engineer. Thanks, I learned a lot from this one.
Genuinely thanks for the explanation like this !!
Wonderful video! Chain test give me a simple easy way to understand if a construction Will be resist or not without matematic....Great!
Yup -she's definitely having fun.
This was mind blowing and pretty informative also great fun! love from bangladeshi civil engineering undergrad student.
Really good content.
All vids need to be watched in 2x speed.
interesting, thin semi circle arch does not work well. Now I'm questioning circular tunnel since isn't it like 2 semicircle?
I've thought about it. Tunnel have lateral pressure while arches is only gravity.
All kind of arches works well if they are lateral pressures. Sometimes an semicircular arch is more beautyful than a catenary arch

AMAZING, I HAVEN'T SEEN A VIDEO LIKE THIS
Interesting, thanks! Was nice to learn all arches don't need keystones :)
So the chain test also tells you how thick you have to make an arch?
He seems like a good teacher. I wonder where his assistants are now. Hopefully doing well.

Does the thickness of the chain play a role in the mapping of the arc? If so, what ratio is necessary for it to be correct?

the friction between the foam and the table would've held together the arch.

no, its cause your holding it mate, same as a hammock that has anchor points on trees
Right? Completely different scenario. The fabric is woven together and actually is analogous to the chain, not the arch.

YOu say the arch cant hold the weight of 2 blocks then clearly push it down with your hands before you put the blocks on it.

A thin arch can sometimes be used because it is the material strength, not the shape, holding it up.
Yes. Yes it is cool!
