    I cant recommend the Swappable series enough. Its amazing, to build something yourself, and then see it fly beautifully. My first plane was the FT Flyer, and its great! The swappables is great too if you are like me, and love building. So many wonderful airframes awailable, and you can fly them all with the same set of electronics. Cheap and Fun!

      And for you guys at FliteTest, Thank you. You provided all the right steppingstones for me to get into this great hobby. Without you I would not be flying today. Thank you for what you do. I hope you see this!

      Great advice! I started with the FT Flyer, too. Actually, two FT Flyers and a buddy, which I cannot recommend enough. It's been almost three years now, and I've never actually swapped a swappable. My power pods don't survive long enough, and I wind up gluing them in to get back in the air. By the time my next plane is ready to fly, the previous plane is so badly damaged that I discard the whole airframe and transplant the electronics.

    I have been flying and teaching flying for over 30 years now and I completely agree about the Apprentice for a 4 axis airplane trainer for beginners. I have had kids as young as 6 years old fly and land this airplane the first time out! I have also taught people 80+ fly this airplane with the same success and the best thing is the smiles afterwords! I love teaching new people how to fly. I usually bring my Apprentice along with me when I fly, I normally fly my 106" Edge 540 and people are constantly coming over and asking if they can fly, I say no but you can fly this.... The Apprentice Well done guys!

      The Sport Cub S is a good choice as well.

      Yep its a good plane as well although it does not have the three settings for novice, intermediate and advanced and it does not come with the transmitter or battery. The Apprentice comes with everything you need to get in the air, including the charger

      The S model brings all of those features, the carbon Z ones don't.
      I fact, I learned to fly with the S model.

    hi I have a t-28 trogan crashed it 2 times but now i am confident to fly any plane. When i am nervous to fly a rc plane i usually crash but now i am confident and i fly on the he golf course! i am 11 and really enjoy flying rc planes and you guys inspire me. You are the reason i got into flying rc planes.

    I learned on an original Champ, a Duet, and a micro Sport Cub S. The Champ no longer flies, but I still enjoy flying the Duet and Sport Cub, even though I've moved onto HH's micro warbirds. The Duet is great for the backyard and the Sport Cub is a joy to fly on a calm day.

  • @wordreet

    Yeap! It was a Bixler 2, pusher glider type, that taught me how to fly. And crash. And fly, and and etc. No "SAFE" tech in it, just long grass to land in. Oh and a tree ... and some prickly gorse bushes. Owich!! :¬o
    So after around 2 years, old Bix was flying sort of sideways after one too many unexpected arrivals. So he's retired now and I'm into pod and boom gliders! :¬)

    • @azgarogly
      @azgarogly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I ordered my Bixler on Xmas day of 2011. My first RC plane.
      Had lot of fun with it over a grass and over a snow. Lots of carbon tubes replaced. Lot of glue used :)
      Still sits on my shelf waiting to be fixed and flown again one day.
      The FT Flyer was the second. Great bird I've modified different ways.

    The Pusher Configuration worked out best for me. Started with a Multiplex Easy Glider, and even with this you can get 30-40min flights on a good termal spot. Was very enjoyable!

    I've built a number of your planes, most from speed build kits. I love the Storch - so excited to get nice coordinated turns the other day. The Bloody Baron was a blast (until it ended up in a thicket, but we got it back.) These planes are so easy to repair, too. The Bloody Baron lost about three inches off one wing tip, but I just traced out a new part from the tattered remains and glued it on.
    Anyhow, my point is that I plan to build another Tiny Trainer. I want to keep a plane in the car, ready to go, and I think that might be a good one. It was a smooth, nice flier on three channel. I never got to try the four channel wing with 3S, but now I have the batteries so I will certainly give it a go. Tiny Trainer gets my recommendation.

  • @wlouisharris
    @wlouisharris 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great suggestions. I would add the FT Flyer as well. It's really easy to build and fly. The Tiny Trainer is a good plane as well. The really cool part if you build your first plane is when you destroy it you will know how to build another one. There's nothing worse than going out and paying 100 bucks for a plane only to destroy in a matter of seconds. My #1 plane I recommend however is the UMX Radian. It's also really easy to fly and gives you a lot of confidence. The only downside is it's BNF only. I also have a Dynam Hawksky which is an awesome pusher prop plane and it's really cheap. I have pretty much covered all of the beginner range planes I think - lol.

    Josh,
    Although this plane is now out of production, many many of our club members have used this trainer to learn to fly/enjoy R/C. I'm talking about the FlyLite trainer. In fact, the plane is so well loved that people are buying the parts and assembling the plane that way. It is a calm weather/wind plane though because of its light construction. Perhaps they should put it into production again.

    I've been loving the content recently, you guys are great! Keep it up! I've been watching almost every video for the past few years and looking at the comments three years later from the 2014 Lauren International acquirement update and seeing how the comments predicted the future of FliteTest back them. How wrong they are. FliteTest is doing really well and to be honest I haven't noticed a difference in content whatsoever, apart form the lack of sponsored reviews. You shouldn't thank US for watching we should thank YOU for the awesome content.
    Your videos have inspired me to get back into RC planes and I don't know what to get
    I decided to really get into the hobby about a year ago and I got a, DX6i and a Sport Cub S. It was a great plane, but I ended up crashing (completly over enthusiastic and I flew it in 10mph winds. A bad combination.) braking the wing. I got another wing but I ended up widening the servos backwards. Genius. I knew that they were reversed before flight so I reversed the channel on my radio, but it tried to mix in opposite rudder in beginner mode. As a result it crashed it and broke most of the fuselage and the motor and motor shaft. This left me with a wing (worth £20) , receiver (worth £50) and battery (worth £7). I really want to get back into RC planes (4ch and with safe to make learning 4ch easier) and I would also like to get into CP helis as FP helis are too similar to quads which I am familiar with (I have flown 4 quads over the period of 2 years, and I'm really into AP, I have a Phantom 3 Standard), so what should I do?
    1. Buy a whole new Sport Cub S and have a spare wing for it (£80).
    2. Buy a Champ S+ and ditch my spare Sport Cub S wings, for brushless and GPS functionality (£90).
    3. Try to diy and get a new fuselage, tailset, landing gear, motor housing and motor for my Sport Cub. Not the best option at £67 cheapest!
    4. Make a big investment and get both a new Sport Cub (with spare wings) and a Blade nano CPS. (£154).
    5. Just get a Nano CPS (£74).
    6. Possibly squeeze a Nano cps in with the Champ S+ (£165).
    7. Possibly build one of your great kits (£?).
    There all B-N-F prices and I'll bind them with my DX6i.
    I don't have much money to spend.
    I've got plenty of space to fly.
    Thank in advance.

    I had the worst experiences so far I did a 6ft gas build 2 stroke high wing. An old guy flew it for me and said it was a great first build. He gave some tips just to try to show me a patern run a and I nosed it in. And I am a real pilot. So not even close to the skills matching. 600$ gone. Next Helicopter, practiced up n down up n down in the garage for months, soon as i took it to the back yard I went above fence line and a gust got it.. never saw it again. 3rd flight foam glider 1mph wind, axis control auto return to flyer on. .. pusher Volance 600 got it airborn and it just would not react rudder elevator wind push it backawards out of the park lost radio contact after trying to return to take off mode. It turned with the breeze and never saw it again so Im a grand$1000 in and have yet to fly more than 30 seconds...any tips for ez beginner flyers?

    I bought the apprentice as my first plane over 3 years ago and i still sometimes use it. It can take a beating! I had the nose completely break off and just used hot glue and packing tape and it works perfectly fine now. Half of my elevator broke off mid flight and i was able to land it and use a piece of foambord to make it work like new again. I even added a bomb drop box to it as well. Overall, I would 100% recommend as first plane.

    Best beginner plane I flew was your FT Storch! So forgiving, really stable, loads of room for mods and easy to repair. I started with just a standard 4 channel set up, crashed it hard, glued it back together, crashed some more, put flaps on, crashed some more. The thing lasted about a year, but after that year I was ready to fly and repair everything.
    I think the most important thing about a starter plane is not necessarily how it flies, but also how easy it is to repair and adapt. Because as we all know, flying RC planes is 50% flying, 50% repairing.

    • @userTJ39780
      @userTJ39780 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I built a Storch for the same reason, but the landing gear never lined up, so it crashed every time I flew it. Finally gave up and went with the Scout.

    I bought the Apprentice STS a couple of months ago...last week the entire horizontal Stabiliser delaminated and dived it into the ground. I've opened up a dispute/complaint dialogue with the manufacturer...hopefully i get fair treatment. In the mean time,if you have one
    i would suggest puting a piece of vinyl or tape along your leading edge. I had no signs of an issue before takeoff ...it was a sudden and catastrophic failure that has destroyed my plane.

    I learned with the original yellow Champ with no assistance. Coming from helicopters and quads I actually found it a little too easy, but now my son flies it.
    It has had both wings ripped off in crashes and hot glued back on and still flies like a "Champ".
    I now fly FT Sparrow and Arrow and an AXN as well as quads still.
    My son who just turned 8 is flying a 250 quad with FPV goggles and loving it.
    Very small criticism, Josh S voice is louder than Josh B so I find myself turning the volume up and down so I don't disturb other people. I don't know if anything can be done about it and it's no big deal, just thought I would mention it.

    I'm currently trying to get into the hobby of flying, my question is, should I start off with a cessna 182' 500. I've played loads of plane simulators and watched loads of RC plane training vidoes, what do you think?

    All very good planes, even though I had a negative experience with my girlfriend's Champ yesterday. It looks like we had a GPS flyaway, as the aircraft decided to fly off at full throttle without any reaction to steering inputs. Sadly it ended up in a tall tree where it could not be recovered. Apart from that, it always flew lovely, even though I feel as if I've could have taught her to fly with a conventional plane in all the time we spent on setting up GPS and all. She was of course very disappointed in losing her first own plane. We're now building a Tiny Trainer as a replacement, so we get the fun of building it as well!
    Onwards and upwards :-)
    Many thanks for all your amazing content. You are a great source of inspiration and produce all around enjoyable content. I really hope that Flite Fest will make it to the European continent at some point!

    Hmm, something else to add...I personally learned R/C on my own using a GWS Slow Stick. That was back in the days of NiCads and 72 mhz. Dealing with garbage esc's and receiver-bec incompatibilities was a pain in the neck, but it was a fantastic learning platform. I dorked that thing in more times than I can count, and it's still flying after almost 15 years of being pranged by various beginners.

    I have to second the advice to buy a Radian in either size. Very easy learning platform, and the spare parts availability is excellent.I do disagree about the space requirements of gliders, though. With practice, you can fly a lightly loaded glider in tighter spaces than you'd fly most other models.

    4 years later, an excellent choice for a first plane offers a high wing airframe, 10mm brushed geared motor, pop-off prop hub and 3 flying modes including beginner and intermediate SAFE levels and a full manual mode. The 20" wingspan plane is made of EPP foam which is much more resilient and flexible versus standard "Styrofoam" EPO aircraft. Search TH-cam videos for the 4-channel "Volantex Sport Cub 500".
    Here's one example: th-cam.com/video/dIgJBBf132Q/w-d-xo.html
    A 3-channel version called "Super Cub 500" is also available. I recommend the 4-channel version.

    Bix3 is not so easy to set up for beginners. For getting the right cg you need to add some lead in the front... best pusher-beginner plane for me still is - and always will be - the Multiplex Easystar II with ailerons (all you need is included in the set, except two aileron-servos (9g))

    Weird...I built the tiny trainer (complete) then the FT Flyer, then the Mini Arrow and just 10 minutes ago finished a Mini Scout...So basically I have 7 planes built and never touched the sticks yet...i hope I like flying otherwise I might go into business as a builder lol....now I'm dying still waiting for China to ship me my electronicals...UGH. ..I still have 3 foam boards, tape and glue though...maybe an explorer is next? ...i got all that built for under 6 sheets/$6!

    A cheapo Airhogs plane was my first RC plane. All control was done with differential thrust, surprisingly maneuverable and lasted so much longer than anything else in that category. My first "real" RC plane was the original Flyzone Skyfly, lasted forever and flew great. Still have it lying around to upgrade with modern components some day. Currently flying the Flyzone Calypso and a 5" Alien frame. Two very different flying styles, but the Calypso is probably the most stable and easy to fly plane I've ever owned.

    "The nice thing about gliders is... they glide." Lmao 8:16

  • @DualDesertEagle
    @DualDesertEagle 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I started by putting a receiver, a battery and 2 servos (for rudder and elevator) on a free flight glider and hand-launched the thing off the top of a slope. The flights didn't last long since it had no motor to maintain altitude or climb, but that's how I got into RC-flying. Taught it to myself. Later I encountered an RC-flight simulator at my local electronics store and proceeded to choose a 4 channel plane and smash the living CRAP out of it the first few tries before I got the hang of it after 10 minutes. That's how I learned full 3-axis flying. Not much later I modified a 2-channel glider into a 4-channel 3-axis plane, tossed it up in the air and flew like I'd never been doing anything else.

    Flew nitro with my dad as a kid. My 1st rc to solo was the original Parkzone radian. Still have it. Still love it. From there I got a Parkzone Sport Cub . Flew it a few months and graduated to the plane that is now the FAVORITE plane in my hangar, the Eflite Carbon Z Cub. I almost never go to the field without it. I now fly my Sport Cub on floats & it's great. So as of today my hangar consists of my Radian, Sport Cub, CZ Cub, Rare Bear, Red Bull Edge 540, Red Bull Corsair, Parkzone Sukhoi (regular receiver), Freewing Rebel, Carbon Z Cessna 150.. Previous planes include a Carbon Z T28,(sold) Hobbyzone Corsair , (traded) and a HSD Viper 75 that never flew right so I junked it.

    lol I got a story for u guys so I had my f27c Stryker it took me about a week or so to get a new body then to figure out how to put it together then spray paint it now I'm going out to fly it and then (here's the funny part) I go outside then (I love way way out) I front of my house and decide to fly it well my sisters friend came over that day he was a little drunk or so haha so I go fly it and he's watching me fly it and he tells me "hey let me try to fly it I can do it" he's never done it before so I explain too him how to do it and if he is going to crash it he would give me the controller so.. he takes it and hmm flys it for 3 seconds and then it nose dives and I see it comeing and I'm tellin him!! Yo gimme the controller I can get itt back up and he said no I got this... and then he crashed it haha got in his truck to go get it that day he learned that it is not so easy as you think!! 😭😭😭
