Simple Smartphone Metal Detector Experiments

- This time I will try to describe the principle of operation of a simple Metal detectors in which data is processed by a smartphone. The main principle of this detectors consists of LC oscillator which serves as a reference, and on the other side a smartphone application, which is basically a frequency meter. When we put a metal object near to the coil the frequency changes and application detect the change and signalize that there is are metal object near the coil.
The oscillator consists of a parallel LC oscillator circuit and two transistors. I also put two trimmer potentiometers instead of resistors so we can change the amplitude and partial shape of the signal to make it easier to process in the smartphone app. Let me mention that in this experiment I use the great apps of the Neco Desarrollo team "Smart Hunter" and "MFM3 Pinpointer" which are the only Android apps of this kind in the World.
Specifically, my coil consists of two windings connected in series, the larger one with a diameter of 23 cm, and the smaller one with 12 cm. Both are wound with lacquered wire with a diameter of 0.4 mm and contain 25 turns each. It is important that the resonant frequency of the parallel LC circuit is in the range of 4Kz to 20KHz so that it can be processed by the Smartphone. With "+" and "-" Buttons we can change Sensivity of the detector. To have an audio indication I connected the Power Amplifier to the output of the headphone jack.
There is another very interesting application, "MFM3 Pinpointer". This is also a Metal Detector application that can distinguish between ferrous or nonferrous materials.
Finally, let me conclude that this is a very simple version of a metal detector, so it does not have any great sensitivity, but it serves well for educational purposes. To emphasize that it is very unstable, the frequency depends a lot on the temperature, so more frequent calibration is needed. In my previous videos I have presented almost all the metal detectors by Neco Desarrollo or their variations so if you want to make one of them, you can watch them.

Great idea! Pinpointer version would be awesome
Keep up with the great work.
Ти благодарам за пофалбите:)
Dear friend,,can i ask a quiestion??how many volteds can i use in two capasitor in this project?tnx and more power...more project to come..
Great video.just a question where can i find the headphone jack adapter?and is the left and right section of the headphone jack necessary?
For example, from old defective smartphone headphones
Thank you i will try it out
Dear my friend,,can I ask you a question, how many volts of this two capasitor we use for this project
I like this CP metal.detector, I have long time of planning this device to try how it good to detect object, but I don't have another 1 CP to try and test
Great video, just a question how can i find the headphone jack adapter?and should the headphone jack have the left and right section?

привет, хорошая работа.. сэр, у меня есть вопрос.. как вы отправляете звук на динамики с подключенными наушниками.. как мы можем сделать отдельную разницу частот для металлов.. любовь

What if you had two pickup coils wound opposite each other so that they perfectly cancel out? It would be like an electronic interferometer, no? If the impedance changes asymmetrically across the coils, they fall out of phase and give a readable signal. At least, that is the theory. I know more about physics than electronics, so please do correct me if I'm mistaken, but I think it could make for a very sensitive detector. The signal strength would be determined by the transmission coil, and only the phase variance would be determined by the feedback from the target. I probably don't know what I'm talking about, but maybe it's a new toy to play with. 🤪
In fact, in the course of experimentation, I also tested that option unintentionally, but the results were the same

Help...I tried this circuit but when I plugged it into my phone it was not detected by the phone. Probably because the 200nf capacitor acted like an open circuit on the mic jack so it was undetected. Is there any way to manually bypass this automatic mic detection?
You should connect a 10k resistor in parallel to the microphone input

Hello Mirko, I made the circuit. It oscilates at 9khz. But it's blind to every object that I put. maybe if the object is too closer to the coil the detector screams. I tried to adjust the two trimmers in a lot of ways, but it can't detect objects in a small range. When I put an object I see the variation of the signal on the screen, but the detector is mute. I made the coil same as you. Please help me. Thank you.
Try to connect connect a 10k resistor in parallel to the microphone input

you are moving way too fast.
why not stay in the area where it barely detects the metal? show what happens there?
once it beeps there is no need to move closer fast. we know what happens.
its more interesting to see how it detects in the area where it is just about to start.
