When I first watched this episode back when I was a kid my dad, who was watching the show since 1963, was with me and when the line "I am the Master" came on, my dad's jaw dropped that another classic villain had come back.
This was a huge deal when it broadcasted since the master was such a big character in the classic era but nobody expected him to return due to the time lords being dead, Arguably one of the biggest plot twists the show has ever had. I love the expression on Tenant’s face at the end, what a cliffhanger
I absolutely love this episode, and it was so much fun to see you come across all the plot twists! The Master is actually a character that dates all the way back to 1971 (actually, a voice clip of one of the old masters was used at 10:41 in your vid), and he was used in the classic series more than the Daleks and Cybermen were! Luckily, you don’t need any knowledge of his previous appearances for this. Very much looking forward to the next reactions… this’ll definitely be fun to watch :)
Interesting to know he was in the classic. And surprising to know he was used more than Daleks and Cybermen. Didn’t expect that. Can’t wait to see what is to come. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
@@HamzaReactz Yeah, he was basically the Doctor's "arch nemesis." The whole dynamic was somewhat cheesy in classic who but I think they did a really good job in New Who at bringing him back in a more serious tone and I think it really worked. I hope you enjoy the rest of the season. I'm super hyped for season 4, it's my favourite season!
I've been waiting all day to see what you thought!!! The Master is the Doctor's nemesis from Classic Doctor Who. Having him turn up, after all the 'Last of the Timelords' stuff we'd been led to believe was JUST EPIC for long term fans!!!! This episode is so great because of the way it starts off full of funny lines, and warm reunions....and then suddenly, once Martha sees the Watch, it all goes suddenly high stakes!!! The next episode s equally awesome. I'm afraid I think the last episode of the series is not so great- but it does tie things up nicely, so it does what it needs to.
Interesting. Yeah I can definitely see why this would be a big thing for the fans. Really interested to see what happens in the next episodes with The Master. Having Two Time Lords on screen at the same time is new to me so I can wait to see what happens. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Weird coincidence, just got the Blu-ray boxset for classic who S8 where the Master makes his debut in the franchise and all 5 stories/25 episodes in the series have him as the villain. Tbf to how Jack is portrayed in Doctor Who vs Torchwood, lot of people are different around different friend groups/friends vs family. In terms of Master numbering system its complicated. Taking all things into account then if we were to give the Master a number like the Doctor, the most common answer is that the Yana/Derek Jacobi Master was the 16th and the John Simm Master at the end of this part, is the 18th (in the expanded universe the Jacobi Master regenerates into a small boy during the Time War (17th Master), but degenerates back to Jacobi Master, and then not long after, chameleon arched himself to become Yana and hid at the end of the universe).
That’s cool you got the box set. Love physical media. Need to start collecting again. Regarding Jack’s portrayal, what you said makes sense and that would be a fair reason as to why he’s different. I guess in Torchwood he has a leading role and more professional role, but here he is having fun as he says in the episode that he misses this. So yeah that makes sense. The last paragraph is very confusing for me to understand 😂 sorry. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
I've been looking forward to this reaction. In case you are wondering why they bothered to have the master revealed and then immediately regenerate, it had been teased since the beginning of series 3 that John Simm (the actor we see in the final scene) was going to play the master and would be the lead villain in the finale. We even had a mid-series trailer which included shots of John Simm. Everybody was therefore expecting Utopia to be the last standalone episode before we jumped into the two-part finale. You can therefore imagine the shock when this episode airs and the old man (played by Derek Jacobi) is revealed to be the master instead but then immediately regenerates into John Simm.
I, a lowly watcher of the series in real time but not media follower, was not aware they were bringing anyone to be the Master, so I was thoroughly surprised.
Just been catching up on all your Torchwood reactions, thanks for watching the whole series it was great to see your reactions and hope you enjoyed it! Great to see you back on doctor who again! One thing I would add is that you will need to watch series 2 of Torchwood before you reach “The Stolen Earth” in series 4 as there will be a major spoiler for Torchwood if you haven’t watched it yet. Please keep up the reactions, love watching them :)
It's so awesome to see someone discovering Doctor Who for the first time and knowing nothing. Reminds me of myself when I first started watching the show 38 years ago lol.
I hadn’t watched torchwood before I watched series 3 of Who. So I didn’t have the issue of Who Jack vs Torchwood Jack. I like Who Jack better. They are very different shows. Torchwood is dismal without much Hope. Despite some darkness Who always has Hope. But that’s the difference in adults and kids, no? Kids have scary stories and Big Issues but see and process them differently. I think we all need more Kid and less Adult in us. Maybe the most well adjusted Adults never lost the Kid. Kids just have a natural Hope.
Yeah I agree. He feels different but I’m completely fine with it because the tone for Dr Who and Torchwood are different. And maybe it’s just cause I’ve spent two weeks on a more mature tone for Jack. Have to adjust for the type of show I’m watching now. But he’s still great. And I can’t wait to see more of him. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Enter: The Master, the Doctor's long time arch enemy who first appeared in 1971. I think the reason why Jack is different in this to how he is in Torchwood is because Torchwood is more of an adult show while Doctor Who is more of a kid friendly show and they felt they had to lighten his character up abit.
Yeah I agree with that reason. I just had to point it out in the reaction that he seems different to me. But yeah, the obvious reason would be because Dr who is a friendly show. But he’s still great, can’t wait to see more of him. Thanks for watching and commenting :)
All of us were blown away by the reveal of The Master. And yes many of us recognized the voice but the twist can wait for next episode when you see it. Classic who encounters with the Master were the best and sometimes preceded regenerations. Logopolis would be one to check out.
great reaction and brilliant episode, and a great way to reintroduce the Master. Glad you watched Torchwood to get more into Jack's character beforehand. (It's a little jarring how violent TW is compared to DW lol)
I'd seen two Roger Delgado serials prior to Season 3. Remember having a feeling who Derek Jacobi could be and was bouncing in my seat when he confirmed it. Kinda wish he'd stayed as the actor. Was always just a little bit annoyed by John Simm's pixie boy energy.
What she did to him, giving him the ability to never die, it’ll probably be hard to. I have no idea if them two are going to cross paths again (if they are don’t tell me) but if they are, I think it will be something that happens. And maybe they figure out a way to reverse it :)
