My cat had all these same symptoms, he would run through the house like something was chasing him, to only turn around and growl, hiss, and bite at his tail. The episodes were random. Playing with him with laser toys and/or feather toys seemed to help him when he was in an episode as it seemed to take his mind off it. He had the blood tests and x-rays to not find anything. He did react a bit to spinal palpation, but otherwise he was normal in every other way. My vet prescribed gabapentin for him and it has helped him 100%. He's like a whole new cat. He is much more affectionate, cuddles with us, and no longer hides under the furniture 24/7. He will have occasional episodes, but only when he is within an hour or so of his next dose of medicine. The medication route has really worked for my kitty. Not sure if it is a connection or not, but my cat is a gray, short-haired cat just like Sam's is.
Gabapentin every 8 to 12 hours at 15-30mg/kg has really helped my older cats and dogs with hyperesthesia the last few years. Some responded to prescribed organic veterinary cannabadiols, but all responded well to the gabapentin. Three couldn't tolerate NSAIDS or steroids due to liver or kidney health. The side benefit of gaba helping with anxiety at a higher dose, 40-50mg/kg, especially before therapy or treatment in a clinical setting for their other disease(s), was better tolerated and effective than the other anxiolytics we tried, including benzos, ace, and melatonin/valerian. So grateful for effective treatment, as we weren't using gaba unless a last resort for pain or seizures, at a much lower, less effective dose, 8 to 10 years ago. Yay the science of medicine!
Theres a large correlation between FHS and diet causing allergies. I switched my Khao Manee breed to a hypoallergenic diet today. Feeding them Hydrolyzed protein resolves the issue with very little to no episodic flare ups.
Bob Kabob what kind of food are you feeding your cat I've got mine on Prozac and Zylkene she was fine for 3 years then suddenly she started peeing outside of the box she also has a strange issue in that she has a smooth tongue as opposed to an overly scratchy tongue nice when she licks me not good for her I'm having to clean her behind. Animalts are incapable of placebo effect which is what convinced me homeopathy is real. It healed my young pup of a bad hip and now the cat.

I have read a lot of research finding that it is a neurological issues. If this is the case by bringing in a clean diet, preferably a raw diet and incorporate into your cats diet things like spirulina (at small amounts) and other natural remedies to detox the body and also to help calm them, is a good option. Anyone who is still trying to help their cat who has feline hyperesthesia and sees this video: CBD controls my cat who had this, including tail mutilation. Personally, I prefer that he gets his daily doses of CBD, for the instead of the several drugs that are used to deal with this condition.
I give my cat CBD also. for about two years now. recently i noticed that she has sores on both hips. i never see her biting herself. her fur is matted tho and raised up and very tender.
I've noticed this in my 9 year old indoor cat. The house is calm & quiet. She still seems happy, not aggressive. Shes quite long haired & over weight so doesn't groom well. I noticed these episodes when we're just lying in bed. I wonder if it could be stress from our other cat passing away. We found her as a kitten on the street. Shes a nervous cat around the hoover etc. But day to day theres nothing going on.
So sad that this appears to be so common😞 I've never heard of this until my cat had a few seizures and a trip to the vet. She is 14 and no prior health issues until recently. The vet diagnosed her HIGHLY allergic to fleas. I was recommended a Bravecto chew (which is for dogs but 1 chew good for 3 months and works $75 ea) but it has changed her life as well as mine for the best! No seziures and living a normal kitty life😸
She isn’t stressed and nothing at our house ever changes and she’s only 10 months old. So I was thinking allergies vs hyperesthesia. She’s a relaxed Ragdoll. She over grooms and has rippling but no aggressive behavior to herself or anyone.
It’s definitely worth switching up food slowly of course. I have noticed an increase when I was feeding turkey so I stop that now I’m trying to wean off of chicken again it could only be a part of the problem or none at all just have to be very vigilant and keep in track there is an app that you can get online to keep track of symptoms
Our cat has twitching along back all the time, sad he thinkin something is attacking him and then must be difficult in the mind to have this happen so much .
Please consider giving a high quality CBD oil Give a large dose of a high milligram (at least 600mg) and be sure it is a Full Spectrum, Pure CBD oil (not isolate) CBDistillery .com has great options
I know this is an old video, but it just showed up. I have a 9 year old cat that I've had since he was 8 weeks old. He started long ago smacking at his tail, and for some reason, it's become almost a nightly thing. Not always though. He will do it for a while, then it's over. He occasionally has a spell of it where he will all of a sudden make this god awful scream, then he's okay again. He's a big boy, he eats well, almost too well, he goes to the litter box fine, and I have just accepted it as his normal.
My cat has fhs for 6 months now. It started after 1 week vet visits. My cat got cold, vet treat him some daily injections. And after 1 week of treatment, my cat had symptoms. I thought he is itchy, we run lots of test at different vet clinics. No medical issues resulted. And by the time, a vet gave me some liquid medicine(gabapentin but no named), i used it for 2 days. It helped with the self attacks. After 2 days, i cut the medicine and syndrome got worse. When he sleeps he is ok, but when he is awake he has this almost all the time. Im so sad, im depressed. In Turkiye no vet expert could help me. I wanna use gabapentin but i cant find any medicine name, can you help me name a one or two safe for cats? Some addition; he get worse when we play games like catching a rope. I think he get excited. Is this a sign for physciological cause?
My cat started having this issue after getting fleas. I immediately used an oral treatment, gave a flea bath , and then continued with topical drops. He still suffers from this periodically. I've read that others notice this after a flea infestation. It's almost like they keep reliving the feeling of fleas biting them. I wish there was more information.
@@beverlydudik9614 Oh yes. He has the rippling skin and viciously bites his tail. Since my first post it doesn't happened as often. If I have a guest he might go through that which also let's me know that environmental stress even if it's mild, like a visitor, can trigger it too. Luckily, it's happening less and less now.
Gabapentin seems to help in a lot of cases, so that would be the first thing to try, it's a prescription. There are more youtube videos on this; someone said their cat was helped by wearing a cat sweater (seems very cat-specific though), some vets said injectable corticosteroids treated this for 3-6 weeks, but it has to be repeated, another vet uses some kind of laser (VOM), etc. Personally i dont have a cat, but I would go for Gabapentin first, corticosteroids if it didtn work, and the laser thing. In another video, I just saw that distraction in the form of a cat toy seemed to resolve the episode, though it was a mild one, just licking the shoulder. It seems to happen when the cat is just sitting there. Frankly, TRY playing with your cat way more. Keep them occupied. Cats are bored, they need to hunt, exhaust themselves. Play with kitty; watch some Jackson Galaxy videos on the importance of play and how to exhaust the kitty, it's important. "Hunt, eat, rest", i think it goes, so play, then eat, then they can rest.
My cat started with weird symptoms. Her ears kept twitching, her back was rippling and her paws kept doing a jerky movement. She also kept chewing on her paws. Her blood work revealed some signs of kidney disease. I kept telling vet about this but she said these were normally not KD symptoms. So she started her KD treatments and her weird symptoms improved. Just sharing because it can also be early signs of KD.
@Satisfycuriosity Well, she was doing ok, but I think since the kidney disease is progressing, her symptoms are back. Overall i must admit her sub cutaneous fluids help her with nausea but everything else is still there. I don't know what's going on, to be honest. I'm just guessing since I can't get any answers from the vet.
My 12-year-old cat has these symptoms but also has hyperthyroidism and had a rear limb amputation 5 months ago. I have him on 50 mg of gabapentin in the morning and night but this makes him really groggy and irritable and I'd like to find something else for him. Could this still be hyperesthesia or something else?
Here’s a good thing I’ve done for enrichment I have a mess in my living room and in my upstairs spare room but I take tissue paper colored or white the color is so cute but anyway and you take each shit and just crumble it and throw it and it makes piles of paper and then you take healthy treats and toss it in there and they jump around and dig around trying to find it it definitely keeps them occupied for a while. Sadly all this started when I switch to Turkey Food and used pheromone so I don’t know if any of that’s related But I definitely stop using the pheromones it was aggravating my birds respiratory and I switched from turkey route food to duck and chicken freeze dried raw
Having trouble getting the medication (amitriptyline 10mg, tiny tablets) into my cat. I can using force, which will work a couple of times until she will hide from me. mixing with food is hopless. Anyone: any suggestions about friendly ways to get pills into a cat?
I saw a video and it worked for for small antibiotic pill (not capsule) : try to put pill on a non smooth surface, like a paper towel or real towel and cover with lickable treat. The rough surface will help their tongue to grab the pill rather than lick treat around it.
I have to give my cat steroid tablets, only half. I crush it between 2 spoons and add to a creamy cat treat, ( those in a tube). She then does not notice it. Not sure if say Amitriptyline tastes foul or not though.
my vet diagnosed my 9 month old kitten with FHS after she took one look of a video I took tat showed the common symptoms. She told me it was very rare and that they would treat her with valium if it won't get better. So basically she had no idea what to do and just went ahead and suggested to drug my kitten for life. I never went to her again because a vet that cannot admit that they are not qualified for something is a dealbreaker for me. Try supplements, and check what kind of food you give them. She had the symptoms for about two months in which I treated her with CBD oil for cats too keep her from panicing too much when she had an episode. Episodes were sometimes up to 6 times a day in a bad week (before CBD) and could last more than two hours. Sometimes flue shots of flea treatments can also cause something that looks like FHS. Right now I'm not sure if she did not have an allergic reaction or to some kind of chemical introduced to the household (she was easily triggered by random smells and was also triggered in places where she had a very bad episode before). I got her down from symptoms now and use the oil almost never. She still shows some occasional skin rolling and ear twitching sometimes when she gets really exited to play but it won't last long and it's weeks apart. She never halucinates or bites herself anymore. I'm so glad it does not define her life anymore.
My 1 year was just diagnosed yesterday and vet wants to put him on drugs for life too. Thanks for your recommendation to use CBD oil I will try that. Can I ask where you get yours? How old is your cat now?
@@lisamaefilms2774 She will turn 1 year in May. Her symptoms started as she was 6 months old. You can order CBD oil for cats online or request it from your vet. It has to be for cats cause the normal stuff is way too bitter for cats to tolerate. FHS is different for every cat. You can also ask your vet for vitamin supplements that help with neurological issues. I suggest you try for a couple of months and see how it affects your cat. CBD also takes some time until your cat shows improvement. I could see a difference with mine after two to three weeks of treating her. It's not a cure but it helps with anxiety and you can adjust the doses as needed. I'd choose it over valium every day. If hers flares up again I'll put some money on the side and check if she has some allergies. Good quality food helps in some cases too.

Can you recreate a room, you remember being in a lot? . Does she still play? If there is an activity she still likes I'd start there and get her tired. I think my cat has this and I need to get her more active because thats what has declined in the quality of her life... good luck
Sacred Wyspers I know this was posted a year ago, but I was wondering if you ever find a solution? You sound exactly how I feel. My cat does the same thing. He was living in my closet now he’s living under my bed. He got in my laundry room and was staying behind my washer and dryer. It has just been terrible.I have had him to the vet seven times in the last month and a half try different drugs then he came up missing for 8 1/2 days and just returned yesterday. He seems calm he’s lost a lot of weight and he staying under my bed. Like you said he only comes out to eat and to use the litter box. I hope you had better luck.
Beverly Dudik hi Beverly Yeap I used rescue remedy for humans I put a 4/5 drops in food couple times a day and I also put on you tube cat relaxation and just ensured the house was peaceful And now she is better then she ever was
Is possible that a kitten. 4 months of age, already has hyperestesia? My kitten yesterday - evening, and this morning, showed the symptoms, he attacked his tail, and hissed. And this afternon he was his usual self, purring and playful
if a kitten has it, i believe it must be food allergy or parasite. just my opinion tho. my older cat has it and i just ordered a parasite cleanse for her. wish me luck!
My cat got his tail amputated after he bit it causing it to bleed he keeps looking at the back and trying to bite at the same spot again he is over grooming himself doesn't have bold spots tho his back moves weird when being pet
He’s grooming himself now so much it’s making him throw up hair balls./ we stopped Rx all medications a day ago.might take a few days to get out of his system... so now we’re not sure if he’s throwing up from excessive grooming from the twitching... it’s infinity ♾ Needs ☯️
Our cat Zeke was finally helped by 150mg gabapentin 3 times a day. It’s actually helped him overall to be less stressed out and anxious. He’s always been very high-strung.
Holy sh*t, that's human dosing!!! How is your cat not in a coma or overdosed?!? I know large dogs who can't take that much!!! (I'm a Veterinarian Assistant so I know what I'm saying)
merncat75 Yeah, my veterinarian told me this is a high dose, but 50mg wasn’t doing shit. She stays abreast of new information, and was also surprised to learn that this dose was recommended for cats exhibiting persistent hyperesthesia symptoms. This medication has helped him a lot....he has anxiety/behavior issues and it has really helped him.
@@AH-cy4md WOW, I'm amazed but if he's handling it then I guess you have to do it.. my youngest cat has high anxiety which is really sad.. I'm going to start him on CBD oil and see if that works first..
Antihistamines target the upper respiratory system so that won't help.. you would be better with giving a high quality pure, full Spectrum CBD oil daily and if your cat will take it, a teaspoon of *unrefined* coconut oil each day

My room mate has a cat has a cat that is constantly licking itself in the same area's that you suggested and has even bitten the skin in the center of her hind end on top of the spine so badly that she has a sore a little bit bigger than the size of a quarter and I'm afraid it's going to get infected because she just will not let it heal !!! She also displays the same characteristic's of what you have described in your video as well as what a lady in your comment section has described! This cat will from out of nowhere jump into an attack like stance, pin her ear's down and commence running like crazy throughout the house accompanied by making a long deep R-WOW sound R-WOW, R-WOW, R-WOW !!!!! Is this "Hyperasthesia" ??? My room mate is living on a fixed income and can't afford veterinarian service's and neither can I, are there treatment's you could suggest that we could try at home for problem? I've spoken with numerous vet office's in my area and they all say the same thing, "you need to bring the cat in so we can put it through a serie's of test's which will cost a small fortune to us, they don't seem to be concerned about the animal, they're more concerned about their fee's and making sure they get paid, so taking her to the vet is not an option! Can you PLEASE help us to help this poor animal? I would greatly appreciate it !!!
If you try feeding ‘no grains’ food. I adopted a cat from Humane society and she had chewed off the tip of her tail till it was bleeding. I had no idea why till I got her home and this behavior started immediately and so many times during the night I didn’t get any sleep! I thought maybe she was having a vaccine overdose reaction because she had been freshly vaccinated with every vaccine necessary for a cat. I now keep out 3 water fountains filled with filtered water and feed only ‘no grain’ dry & canned food as much as possible. I have had her now 10 months and she has very few episodes and when she does- I can lay my hands on her and rub slowly to peacefully calm her and she will lie back down most of the time. Hope this helps! I’ve never had a cat like this before. She is part Siamese with the colors of a Ragdoll or Birman. She started leaving her tail alone after about 2-3 weeks. It’s perfectly fine now . Hair and skin are perfect. Thank You for putting a name to these symptoms! My vet didn’t even act like it was anything - now I can find more info to print out to take if I ever go back! I’m not good at giving cats pills so I’m praying this goes away completely
Please make sure it’s not fleas. Our 29 yr old car starting having seizure type attacks, then I noticed he was furiously biting his backside. We found a few fleas on each dog and cat- we have a few. Put natural type drops, vacuumed, sprayed Wondercide and set out diatomaceous earth. Got rid of the fleas and he stopped having them. Then a few sneaked back in and he’s had a few more til I got more flea drops. Good luck to you! 🐈⬛❤️

Please consider giving a high quality CBD oil
Give a large dose of a high milligram (at least 600mg) and be sure it is a Full Spectrum, Pure CBD oil (not isolate)
CBDistillery .com has great options
Jazz you should notice a rippling of the skin also biting of the tail. It’s terrible. Running around like they’re crazt
Hello. How is your cat doing? My cat has the same symptoms 😢.
My cat has episodes only while he’s napping or sleeping!
@@JP-uf9sh Thanks I appreciate this info. All the best to you and your cat.
Omg I am in tears vets have drugged her and it’s horrible she hates me she knows I am drugging her I can’t do it: please help Natiral ways she isn’t herself I don’t know what’s happened she is 11yrs old always indoor outdoor we moved to a unit 15 months ago I hate it so she does go indoors however only 3/4months ago the symptoms started and the twitching recently and just can’t touch her lower back near tail when she lived it always help I’m broken inside I am scared she hides for hours and hours and sometimes comes for love I miss her help help she can now hides for days coming out just for litter and eating what do I do

Many stated that environmental is it as we ave moved 3 times in her life &furniture movement etc and especially here well why just now
I can’t help what is happening in units below or outside that she fears
I don’t know what to do
Can you recreate a room, you remember being in a lot? . Does she still play? If there is an activity she still likes I'd start there and get her tired. I think my cat has this and I need to get her more active because thats what has declined in the quality of her life... good luck
Pet RR has helped my two some
Sacred Wyspers I know this was posted a year ago, but I was wondering if you ever find a solution? You sound exactly how I feel. My cat does the same thing. He was living in my closet now he’s living under my bed. He got in my laundry room and was staying behind my washer and dryer. It has just been terrible.I have had him to the vet seven times in the last month and a half try different drugs then he came up missing for 8 1/2 days and just returned yesterday. He seems calm he’s lost a lot of weight and he staying under my bed. Like you said he only comes out to eat and to use the litter box. I hope you had better luck.
Beverly Dudik hi Beverly Yeap I used rescue remedy for humans I put a 4/5 drops in food couple times a day and I also put on you tube cat relaxation and just ensured the house was peaceful
And now she is better then she ever was
Can I ask you and I am going my intuition here have you had a change in people living in your home
He’s grooming himself now so much it’s making him throw up hair balls./ we stopped Rx all medications a day ago.might take a few days to get out of his system... so now we’re not sure if he’s throwing up from excessive grooming from the twitching... it’s infinity ♾

How do the cats sounds when cats HV hyperasthesia
Our cat Zeke was finally helped by 150mg gabapentin 3 times a day. It’s actually helped him overall to be less stressed out and anxious. He’s always been very high-strung.
Way too much!
Holy sh*t, that's human dosing!!!
How is your cat not in a coma or overdosed?!?
I know large dogs who can't take that much!!!
(I'm a Veterinarian Assistant so I know what I'm saying)
@@Sky1 you're right!!
WAY too much 🤦♀️
merncat75 Yeah, my veterinarian told me this is a high dose, but 50mg wasn’t doing shit.
What about antihistamines?
Antihistamines target the upper respiratory system so that won't help.. you would be better with giving a high quality pure, full Spectrum CBD oil daily and if your cat will take it, a teaspoon of *unrefined* coconut oil each day
@@merncat75 "Antihistamines suppress the histamine-induced wheal response (swelling) and flare response (vasodilation) by blocking the binding of histamine to its receptors or reducing histamine receptor activity on nerves, vascular smooth muscle, glandular cells, endothelium, and mast cells."
They do not "target the respiratory system "
You need to feed your cat a species appropriate diet.

My cat had this disease when she was 10 months old. It was terrible. She healed thanks to a "biokinesiologue" (I don't know the name in English) It is somebody who communicates with the cat and heals it. Even from far. The person who healed my cat was in Spain whereas I am in France. Please don't let your cat like this. It may get worse. Medications will never HEAL your cat, except maybe make him sleep !! If you need the contact information of the person I know, Please let me know. I will be glad to help. Céline
Bonjour Celine! Merci d’avance!!

Hello Céline! I’m so glad to hear your cat is healed. Could you please give me the information of the person who helped you, I don’t want to have to Medicate my baby.
