Good Catch! I did talk a bit about it in the unedited version but due to time restraints we weren't able to put that segment in. Thanks again for pointing that out!
I looked up Fannybaws in the urban dictionary it means "The name of the greatest pirate who ever sailed the seas. He was born in Scotland and killed the mighty terrorsquid, furthermore he defeated the Vikings in war." Thanks Alestorm fans!
For me, I feel like Alestorm is much like bubblegum: You chew it and it's such a blast and has so much flavor, but after awhile it begins to wear off. Unfortunately, I think the pirate metal in general only has so far to go for a full length album. Pushing it out to long lengths ends up wearing to the end of the rope and takes a bit of the "shtick" away, especially when you're in the confinements of a very specific topic that doesn't allow you to have more dimension/depth to the sound to make it more diverse and dynamic. I appreciate Alestorm and think they've done very well for themselves, carving out a spot at #1 in a microniche and becoming very well known as a result of it, I just feel like with each record I find myself asking more and more so: "okay, but what's next?"
@@gwts1171 Thanks! I've thought about doing a formal review for my channel, but it'd likely be later next week as there are some releases I'm prioritizing, or otherwise want to get to first from the last few weeks, haha. I do music reviews myself. Feel free to check them out if you're curious! :)
This album couldn't have come out at a better time. This was just a fun silly adventure of an album in a time where things have been rough and super serious. It was a great and welcome breather from life over the last few months.
Congrats on graduating, Dylan! As far as the review, Alestorm isn't my thing, but they do always make me smile! It reminds me of getting drunk and playing Sid Meier's Pirates with my friends. I'll skip it, but I'm kinda happy it exists!
Alestorm is a metal band to drink and party with and since I like Pirates I kinda became a fan since couple of years ago because I was looking for a band like them and they are a fun band they don't take it all serious but still are able to keep it Heavy.
Dude, all those Easter eggs in the art are awesome. I’m actually a bit shocked I didn’t see these DK connections, as I’m a huge fan of the DK games, and liked the show a lot when I was a kid. That said, I’ve not really listened to much of the album yet, but I thought it was very... fun. I don’t know if that makes it great, but under the right context, I could see myself really going nuts with this stuff. Anyway, I’m definitely going to dig into this more, if only for that sweet DK fetishism! Lol. Also, great review, dude! ✌️❤️
Wooden leg 2: The woodening may be one of the greatest alestorm songs! I don't know if i'm the only one but i'd love a more proggy alestorm album as all my favourite songs are the long ones like Death throes of the terrorsquid and 1741 The battle of cartegena 🍺
Belated congrats on graduating Dylan. Just curious if you're going to discuss Black Crown Initiate on this channel? They just released their new album! I mean you already have the shirt :)
@@BangerTV Nothing! Just a very different tone from where they started. I like their new stuff, but their initial albums were certainly more "metal" which some people will like better if the DK references, jokes, and rapping throw them off.
@@nisinduperera7130 I understand why they changed, the snapback look and meme lyrics are much more marketable to a larger audience than metal that just also happens to be pirate themed. My point I guess is that the new albums feel like a different band. 2008 Alestorm wouldnt have had the opportunity to play Warped Tour, but 2008 Alestorm also wouldn't have sang "Your pirate ship can eat a bag of dicks , Your pirate ship can eat a giant bag of dicks, You better give us all the money in your treasure chest, Or Kristoff's gonna take a shit on your fucking lawn" lol. Some people may hate new Alestorm and love older Alestorm and vice versa just because they sound so different.
Congrats on graduating! Alestorm have always been a one trick pony but if you appreciate the whole pirate metal genre then they're a band who put out consistently very good quality material, and this album is maybe their best to date. Arrrrr! Avast ye land lubbers!
did not even mention that the bonus disc is the album in 16-bit format, another connection to the DK games. Great album, great review, no plank walking for you.
Shout outs if you’re here because you discovered Alestorm’s cover of “Pirates Scorn,” from “Donkey Kong Country: Legend of the Crystal Coconut,” tv show soundtrack.
Ya know, this is a a love em or hate em type outfit--and, arrrr I happen to love em. My metal elitist instincts cry "Noooooo!" But, this shit just fucking rocks. I am happy to say, that I caught on to Alestorm when they first hit the scene. I was blown away then, and I'm blown away now. I have had the pleasure of seeing these swashbucklers live too, and they are nothing but fucking awesome. Metallic fun! OH WOW!
Now that the hype has worn off, I'd say the album is a solid banger. I don't think there is a "bad" song on it, but I do get the perspective that the album could have done without some. Call of the Waves did stand out to me from the album, it felt much different from the other songs in some way (then again, a call to adventure is kind of hitting me stronger atm). Tortuga is a fun song overall, I know it attracted some controversy but really it's just a goofy song that you can easily sing along to and maybe get drunk along the way. The best two songs in the album are ZAMPT and Wooden Leg Pt. 2. They have everything we know and love Alestorm for: great orchestrals, memorable and great lyrics, Chris Bowes' amazing vocals making you feel like you're sailing the seas and a fun story to go along with it (ZAMPT is about a zombie horde that has been unleashed by druids in order to reclaim all stolen wood, and Wooden Leg has a story that includes voodoo magic and self-decapitation). Overall, if you like Alestorm, you'll like this album and if you want to try something new that is also a fun thing to listen to, I can very much recommend it.
Aside from TCPQ and Fannybaws, the best song old the whole Album is their cover of Pirate's Scorn. Not since Alestorm covered Lazytown's ''You are a Pirate'' have I been so overjoyed.
You missed mentioning 'Ye Banished Privateers' as a pirate band not to miss...for shame. Other than that, great review or an album that I really enjoyed.
As an Alestorm fan for over 10 years now, I have to honestly say this is their weakest album yet. I'm trying so hard each listen but I just can't get into it. And it sucks so much because I think their last album No Grave But The Sea was their best album yet
Eh, in retrospect, there only a few songs I enjoy in NGBTS. Not to say that the rest are bad, but they're just there. I enjoyed the entirety of BTT, SOTGA and majority of BSTM and CMR. No Grave, while good, was sort of just there. But hey, tastes and what not.
It's cute when a metal band is so chill that fans have space to sit down on the ground at their shows ... and pretend to row a boat... by cute I mean fucking stupid
Wanna hear something actually good that is released today, check out the self titled Wayward album. Killer throwback metal, Motorhead NWOBHM vibe, awesome!
Greetings from Finland. I can agree with you on pretty much everything else, but on your opinnion about Tortuga. I would say, that it was easily their weakest song, from all recordings. How can you fuck up a pirate metal song so badly, when teamed up together with one of the biggest pirate metal bands? But oh well, life still continues. I would still like to see Alestorm again live ;P Rowing sessions are freaking funny
That hair tho, nice. Also really dislike Alestorm but i get the appeal. they must be really damn fun live. Also Dylan please review the new Defeated Sanity once it drops.
I liked "tortuga" it made me feel like I was listening a nowadays version of Faith no more!! I think they are reaching some places beyond the gender! Great review! Well done Dylan!!
I think this album shows the band is in quality decline. The songs are going backwards in soundscape, the texts aren't interesting anymore, it's more party and less storyline. Less making epic stories of silly things, and instead it makes silly stories of epic things. Taking back on old songs is inspirational poverty. And what I think is worst of all: They keep on with public harassment. That did it for me. This band is saying 'fuck you' to their audience and that's a total nope for me.
Congrats on graduating Dylan!
WOOOO!
the vocalist for finntroll is on chomp chomp btw so the finntroll similarity was probably intentional.
Good Catch! I did talk a bit about it in the unedited version but due to time restraints we weren't able to put that segment in. Thanks again for pointing that out!
Alestorm didnt write Henry Martin. Its a Cover of a Scottish Folk song from the 17th Century.
I seem to remember a friendly rivalry between swashbuckle and alestorm many years ago, that might have included a magic the gathering battle
The screaming in Chomp Chomp actually is Mathias Lillmåns from Finntroll, so it's not just homage to Finntroll; it actually is Finntroll.
I like being reminded Banger is a Canadian operation when they say things like “university” instead of “college”
To be fair, we have both.

As a Glaswegian, it brings me GREAT joy to hear a song called fannybaws.

Dylan calling the beginning of "Tortuga" gangsta rap is like somebody's aunt calling Disturbed death metal.

Yeah seriously though
But it has got a tinge of gangta in it
It sounds more like a latin rap flow though
