  • Something a bit different. Went for a paddle down a river in the south west of Australia. Armed with a kids paddle, a heavy canoe and a borrowed 6lb outfit 👌🏽
    Most fish were caught on a weedless hook and either a Zman TRD CrawZ
    or a Pro Lure Fishtail
    Fishing line I use: www.bustedfish...

    Yeah I’ve tried scaling them before too 😂😂 found it a lot easier to cook with the scales on them just peel the skin/scales back.. protects it while you cook it and holds in more juices too

      And not too big... 7-8” are good. A bit coarse, and usually female above that.

      You can’t scale them, you need to skin them to clean them.

    Catch a lot of these in the UK same species of course, those would all be decent sized fish over here. It is likely they grow quicker in the warmer temps down in aus. Killing them is frowned upon over here but would love to eat one.

    I grew up in the Eastern States inland so redfin where basically target species (cod & yellow belly as well) they like the clean running water so they taste good. Some of the bigger ones (2 kgs +) get a bit fatty but the size you where catching there spot on big enough for a feed but too big

  • @canucklehead0
    @canucklehead0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So how did you enjoy the Perch? Here in Canada we have a variant called the Yellow Perch that closely resemble the Red Fins you were catching (although ours are a bit smaller fish 200-400 grams on average) I love to take them in the winter through the ice, which when you attract a school can be great fun, and a very tasty feed! I really enjoy your videos, you get to some absolutely amazing places, and catch some spectacular fish!! I hope you have a great Christmas, with Covid being an issue here at the moment I'm not too sure Christmas is even going to happen for a lot of people, anyway I hope you have a good one,...cheers!

  • @gerhardgraf3335
    @gerhardgraf3335 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well, those redfin perch seem to be the same species as the european river perch (perca fluviatilis). We normally use special tools for scaling them. Having nothing but an ordinary knife that's really a difficult task! You can easily make one out of one or two crown caps, fix it/them to a stick or a piece of wood with a nail or small screw and you're ready to go

    Don’t bother scaling them. Skin them instead. You just need to lift a corner up near the dorsal, and pull it with pliers. Personally, I prefer to fillet and skin Redfin. Remove the pin bone line and IMO, they are one of the nicest fresh water fish to eat. Used to enjoy taking the tinny out onto a lake, find a school and catch a Don Bradman score (coz they are a pest).

    Mate, over the long weekend i found out how much fun fishing for redfin is aswell!!! They are good on the chew, but i tried scaling but dam to tough ( they have a really interesting scale pattern) so stuck to filleting and skinning them. Crummed and shallow fried and you could easily mistake it for whiting fillets!!

  • @adamskitheangler3631
    @adamskitheangler3631 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice work mate! Not bad for a first time fishing for redfin perch. We get them here in Scotland, but usually in much smaller sizes (the ones you caught would be considered very good-sized over here!) Let me know if you ever find an easy way to scale them!

  • @bennuballbags2
    @bennuballbags2 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good size Reddies mate, you are a master of all forms! Red fin are the best fresh water fish you will eat hands down. Redfin are schooling fish so if you pull one out get your line back in asap.

  • @vaughnschultz1189
    @vaughnschultz1189 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just another tip. Dont scale them. Just pull the skin off. Slice the skin along the top and across the gills then grab the edge and pull. Then fillet off the meat like normal.. You been talking with my son Rhien today and he is the Redfin slayer. Good to see ya doing something a little more sedate than cliff fishing.

  • @evanmiris5765
    @evanmiris5765 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Redfin are good eating but it's not worth scaling them . I use a techniqe where you skin the whole fish after a couple of cuts down either side of the dorsal fin, bend the head down and pull it off with the gut cavity and peel the skin of both sides and you have a whole fish with no scales or guts ready to cook.

  • @ozzmosisable

  • @chandangraham1091
    @chandangraham1091 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Best lure I've ever used for redfin is a redbladed spinner. They work great as redfin are extremely territorial and aggressive, I've had them jump easily twice their body lenght out of the water to grab a spinner as I lifted it out of the water. Good fun.
