- The Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the south of England. It has historic roots dating back to the Neolithic period, and through the Middle Ages was a commercial powerhouse, producing the finest quality wool for export to Europe and the world.
But how did the Cotswolds get its name?
There are many theories and like many things, perhaps the true origin will never truly be known.

The jewel of England and beauty spot for the entire UK. Love and warmest wishes from Canada. I like the Goddess theory. This is her uplands and woods!
Kindest regards to you too, from the Woods of the Goddess 🙂
Thank you very much!!
You're very welcome!
I’m voting for the wooded home of the ancient goddess! Makes the most long-term sense.
I like the idea of the Cotswolds being the Goddess’s Land - there is a romanticism to that
I love the goddess idea, but the sheep pens are the more logical/practical backstop to the naming.
Beautiful area. I wish I could visit in my lifetime, but it's simply not in the hand I've drawn. ❤
The sheep theory for me
That's definitely the theory I always had known - the others were new discoveries for me.
Logically , home of the sheep
