Well, The human animal in this situation caged the other animal and is now providing the other animal with what it needs to survive, in a cage.
So the Human animal, as kind as it is, is putting itself into this situation through choice alone.
The Bird animal just doesn't want to be around this Human animal, but can't simply leave - its trapped, so it pushes the human animal away.
Instead of listening, the human animal keeps returning for more. So in the end, its not necessarily animal abuse as much as its an animal unhappy with its captors presence.
