Although string can go through it, notice the holes are not round. They are flat. They were designed for strips of material or straps to go through. You can still buy these straps individually wrapped in most camping departments. Saying these are 4 shoe strings is kind of like saying all horses were designed for the carriage.

It's not just vintage. If you look at any military backpack or piece of kit that has come out in the last 10 to 15 years, you will see attachment points like this which are often called Molle and are used to attach bags, equipment pouches pretty much anything to a larger pack and can be quite useful. That they don't just have the Vintage appeal now, they have a lot of real-world applications. Interesting to hear the origin though.

Not totally correct. The patch was originally used in conjunction with a, usually nylon, loop attached near the bottom of the pack to secure an ice ax to the pack. The ax was dropped into the loop, pointed end first and then brought back up to the patch and secured by a small , usually nylon, strap fed through the slots in the patch and secured by a snap.

the Hershel back pack example has missed two stitches on the leather patch. cheap just like their products. very popular now but made by slave labor. On a real back pack the patch would be off to one side so that the ice axe point would not be pointed at the climbers neck. I made back packs under a major brand and when i made one with two patches it was copied by eastpak and they still make the style. that was in 1979 !! I'm responsible for the messenger bag craze. guess who. I was also the first designer to use plastic hardware on bags which is now industry standard.

There’s a kid at my school that’s actually been using it to hold his shoes, and this was way before this video came out

Oh, so it's used for exactly the same purpose that everyone thought it was, which is surprising, since it looks like it was meant for that purpose in particular.

I always thought there was a hole underneath it so you can hang your earphones out like leave your phone in your bag and have them coming out into your ears

Basically it’s big enough to hold a small shank so when you go school you can just quickly reach for your back and pull the knife out in times of emergencies when your classmates need their sandwiches cut. What you think I was gonna say something else?

What are some lightweight things you can attach to it without it being ripped off? I just bought a "gym sack" bag with one of these. Ill use it mostly for my gym stuff since it wont add too much weight to my wheelchair.
