That is the fastest and most satisfying method I have seen for sure - Thanks! Just wish I owned a compressor and air chisel now. 😢

I strapped a can to a post in my garage, fired up the compressor, got out the air chisel and was done in 2 minutes. Smooth, clean cut. Great hack.

awesome advice. 11 buck harbor freight air chisel and my old pancake compressor worked just fine.

So I'm at the local Farm & Fleet store looking up what tools I will need to do this. So lucky I found your video. Purchased a small air chisel with 4 bits for $13.99. Took me a little longer that 30 seconds as my air compressor could not quite keep up - but less than 5 min for both ends! Thanks for posting!!

    Great video!!
And we didn't have to listen to some yutz grunt, pant, and chatter on for 6 minutes as he tries to use a giant hand can opener!!

Best method I've seen yet and my husband just happens to have an air chisel. How lucky am I? Not only do I need a burn Barrell but I also need one for Raku pottery. Thanks!!

    • @Hubjeep

No, the blunt chisel results in a fairly dull edge on the drum lip.

  • @jshepard152

Cool video. But before you do this, make damn sure the old contents of the drum were not flammable. Vapors can be just as explosive as the former contents, and guys have gotten killed just by drilling or cutting into "empty" drums that exploded. I was just reading about a guy in Pennsylvania who got killed by a burn barrel last week. And I know of another incident in Iowa that killed a man who was welding on top of a barrel, using it as a workbench. Filling the drum with water before cutting into it can displace explosive vapors, if done correctly.

does it leave a sharp edge or does it flatten it against the side like when you doi it with a bulster.

Hey man, great method and I'll be using it today, thanks.
BUT I do want to say... use safety glasses man. One of my technicians just lost his left eye from using the air hammer on a wheel bearing. The bearing splintered and shot to the back of his eyeball like a bullet, tore the retina off the back wall. He's blind in that eye now. I know pretty much every single "old timer" in every type of shop will say "I aint wearing those pussy goggles" but look man, I ain't going blind over here. No thanks.

Burn barrel. Used a 3" hole-saw to cut 8 holes on the side of the barrel. Half of them about 3" from the ground, the other about a foot up. Air flow is key, no holes = crappy burn barrel.
