It’s FINALLY time to ride the world famous Moab masterpiece they call Mag 7 to Portal. Can it really live up to the hype?
Abso-freakin-lutely. This is probably my favorite ride of all time now - EVEN WITH the 16 miles of semi-snoozefest leading up to the main event. My skills are finally perfectly aligned to have an amazing time on this wild ride.
Portal is rated a “Pro Line” on Trailforks, but that just seems to be from the two really silly spots where people try and die. One looks impossible, the other looks totally doable. We rode Rockstacker & Jackson’s the next day (which will be on the MTBING Adventures channel tomorrow) and the technical moves were much more intimidating and nasty than Gold Bar Rim + Portal.

Once I walked past the 'death' spot, I had one of the most amazing rides in over 30 years of mt biking. I couldn't believe how dialed and in the zone I was as I ripped down all that rocky stuff. What amazes me more is not that the guy is riding along the edge of a cliff, but with what enthusiasm and excitement he passes every obstacle. He is absolutely focused on the road and, combined with his skills, this allows him to drive quickly and efficiently even on the edge of a cliff, overtaking another hurried cyclist. If he sees an opportunity to drive better, he takes a bike and drives through the site again. The crazy rocks he's riding on are really impressive. This is an exorbitant level of off-road driving. I am very inspired by such people.

@@Lootroq That race is absolutely nuts. Not at the technical level of the Portal trail but just the sheer length, number of riders and speed of it makes it super crazy.

I went to Moab in 1994 and the Portal was my favorite trail of the four I did. It was early September and I had the trail to myself. These newer videos show how eroded this trail is compared to when I rode it. I would love to one day get back there to ride again and do the Portal and Porcupine Rim.

I discovered the MTB in 1995. I have noticed since finally upgrading to a new MTB after 20 years that the trails are all made for/by 26 inch wheel bikes. Much harder to use my 29er on lots of the switchbacks and of course those mile wide bars! But, after a few rides I was smiling ear to ear. It is like rediscovering the sport! Upgrading from a 1998 GT Zaskar LE to a 2022 Specialized Sworks EVO PRO is mind blowing. Ride to Live, Live to Ride.

18:36 SOOO RELATABLE! This reminds me of skiing... I only with there were gnarlier trails serviceable by lifts. Those tests of your limits where you look before you leap and then walk up to do it reminds me of a good day at MRG! I might have to get into mountain biking once I can afford the equipment. By then I'll never get to your level though. Not that I could now! Very impressive!

Man, I rode the Slick Rock trail over Moab year ago that that was at the very top of my ability. Was an absolute joy and nightmare to get through that, a huge rush. This... damn. Well done. That trail looks dangerous even for walking in some places. There's no two ways about it, Southern UT, especially the Moab area, is out of this world beautiful and crazy.
