It really is a shame that western audiences usually see cartoons as "for children". Animation is a medium, not a genre. There are so many different stories that are told in the animated form that are dismissed, and it's pretty lame.
JessietheLookout anyone who doesn't give anime a chance needs to watch spirited away and tell me that it doesn't hit you in the feels its the best miyzaki film
JessietheLookout The ' cartoons is for children' school of thought didn't really take hold until the late 60s to early 70s because you have the advent of Saturday morning cartoons and there was this movement that was rising crusading against what they perceive as violence in the cartoons by the late 70s to 80s that where we were getting the real watered down shows because most animation companies were subjected to cadres of child psychologists overriding the writers. Also marketing execs who want to sell toys. Hanna-Barbera was an exception because they were dabbling in prime time animation that was meant to be watched by kids and adults during the 60s and 70s. Because if watch the Disney, Warner Bros, Paramount or MGM shorts from the 30s up to the 60s those were made for general audiences and adults because they always came before the feature picture.
Pegas105 Unfortunately even though it didn't take hold until the 60s and 70s, it is still an idea that exists today. Otherwise Chris and many others wouldn't have to justify their adoration for anime.
JessietheLookout Yes I know, for the most part you are correct. But I remind during the war Disney produced a short that was NOT for kids called Education for Death: The Making of a Nazi. Also obscure movie called Victory Through Air Power that where the medium of animation was used to present the case for Long Range Air Power to win the war.
Pegas105 Those are really cool! I knew the Nazi one existed, but I didn't know about the others. There are lots of companies that made less-than-ideal cartoons back in the day (and who knows how we're going to look back on our cartoons in the future), but unfortunately a few propaganda shorts and a film doesn't change the cultural views of an entire continent. There are definitely exceptions to the rule. There are many children's cartoons airing today that are also enjoyed by adults (Steven Universe, Adventure Time and Star vs the Forces of Evil just to name a few) but even if those shorts from 50-70 years ago weren't originally for children, it doesn't change that in today's age the Western world widely views animation as a medium for children's entertainment.
Bravo good sir! I wish I was able to properly verbalise similar thoughts without sounding bias as an anime reviewer myself. I look forward to watching your reviews! Good luck with them :)
For those who aren't particularly into anime and are interested , check out Arkada he's one of the best out there and has tens of reviews, hopefully Chris checks his work out and pick up a thing or two from him
Thanks for pointing this video out. Totally gonna show it to some friends who cant except my opinion because "my opinion dose not count because all i watch is anime"... -_-
Superman13195 we met at anime club. He showed me a couple episodes and i was hooked. I couldn't wait to snuggle up on his couch and watch more. By the end of the series we were best friends. After soul eater we were lovers. 5 years of anime and we are happily married with a kid. But it all started hete.
+Superman13195 Oh youtube drama. Oh commenting idiots. I haven't missed you for such a long time! How have you been? Wait, actually my sexy husband is calling so i dont care. catch you later!
I see Anime as just a medium, I have no problem watching a live action movie or cartoon as long as the story is good, because thats what counts for me. :-)
xisumavoid Well, it is a medium, not a genre. Anime itself has all the same genres as live-action; horror, action, drama, romance, scifi, fantasy etc. It's just different medium.
My thing with people who say "I don't like anime" is... it's not a genre. It's like saying 'i don't like Movies' or 'I don't like television'. I can sit here all day and list anime titles I hate, and that doesn't mean I don't like anime. Every genre you have ever experienced, slice of life comedy, psychological horror, action adventure, romance, and yes porn, is represented in anime. So that's my thing.
People who say "I don't like anime" say this for one of two reasons. Either they're irked by the fact that it's drawn and not real life and our society very much connects drawn entertainment (be it movies, shows or comics) with childish entertainment. So everything that is drawn or animated has to be childish. The other reason why people say they don't like anime is probably because the fans irk them. There's a bunch of really weird weeaboo people out there who ruin something cool for everyone else by overreacting about it. Those guys aren't anime exclusive. They just tend to get noticed more as anime fans because anime itself is a more exotic thing since it's not from our culture.
OnlyRoke Yep, fans of anime are the worst of all. Because of this I rarely talk with another anime fan and this is really bad because there some really cool things that happens and I don't have anyone who talks to...
Thunder Bull Same, the majority of the fandom is obsess with anime they can't comprehend why people are hating on anime is mainly it's cause of the fandom. Plus people still think they have huge overwhelming eyes like in the earlier stage of anime but the art style look so much better now and beautiful. It's sad actually because i wish more people would like and appreciate anime. :(
***** im just happy he's reviewing legit animes like wolf children and princess kaguya.. rather than talking about overrated popular shows like most anime reviewers
Chris is going to be doing more Anime related content this year. Here's what he said on his Twitter: twitter.com/Chris_Stuckmann/status/816159899600244736
As a movie lover myself, Anime really is important. Live action films have their technical limits right now, not including the rut it's in with lack of creativity. Anime on the other hand, with how they do not have that kind of limits as they can just animate it, can reach heights live action can only dream about right now. Anime can pull off almost everything a live action can do, but live action cannot pull off half what anime can right now. If you want to even call yourself a movie lover, you must open up to all forms of it and not close yourself off to one section. There is SO much you can learn about motion pictures from anime. It's all up to how much said person loves their hobby of the art of motion pictures if they will pull themselves out of their comfort zone to learn.
This is how I feel about anime too, I've always found myself more drawn into Epic anime series and films than live action movies. Why? It sound silly, but because anime is more believable. Not literally, but in the way my brain perceives what I'm seeing on the screen. Example, when I'm watching a live action movie the CGI no matter how good it is is ALWAYS distracting to me. Because you are throwing REAL LIFE footage of people or settings and mixing it with fake things. My brain can clearly see what's real and whats not. Now take Anime, the entire feature is Animated. So when someone starts flying through the air, shooting fire out of their hands or something fantastical like that- it doesn't look fake compared to the rest of the production. And so in that sense to me it's more believable, I more easily accept it and am able to get into it. Seriously some of the most amazing story arcs, beautiful romances, and insane battles are Animated and alot of people are missing out.
This video is so imperative, it truly brought tears to my eyes; anime is an artform that is massively underrated. It is beautiful and achieves things that other forms of art cannot. We need more people to watch anime. It brings me excruciating amounts of pain when I realize that many people are being introduced to Death Note (although not a flawless anime, definitely one of the bests) through the Adam Wingard film.
Attack on Titan is widely considered by both critics and fans as one of the best anime series in a LONG time. It's amazing. Just because the ending was incomplete doesn't mean it sucked. There's going to be a Season 2 and all will be explained.
I really respect you standing by your opinion on anime, and I definitely appreciate you bringing anime to a larger audience. I think it's important that people realize the mature topics that anime has and continues to cover since most people still DO have that childish image in mind when they think of anime. A few of my favorites are Black Lagoon and Trigun, and I highly recommend those to people wanting to get into anime.
mark12033 Fun story, one time I commented on a Funimation video and these people recognized me from my interactions with a fellow J-Taku member on Twitter. The world is scary small sometimes.
The anime genre just has so much rewatchability as well as moments where you continually think in your head. Akira, Perfect Blue and the Berserk 90s series, Death Note series, DbZ... all never fail to disappoint.
Leon Lind TV shows have generally a higher rating than movies. How i met your mother have a 8.5, Apocalypse Now and Gladiator also has a 8.5. You cant really compare a TV show rating and a movie rating
Cowboy Bebop is the highest rated movie on Letterboxd and it’s not even a movie! Yes I know that there is a Cowboy Bebop movie but I’m talking about the show. The show is the highest rated thing on a website that’s for movies.
THANK YOU! This man speaks so much truth. There are so many anime misconceptions out there (for example: it's for kids, it's all boobs-and-butts, it's ugly, it's all the same) but people need to realize that it is none of those things. If you think anime is any of those things, you have either never watched it or simply chose the wrong show.
Sarah Hankins So spot on, this is sooo true!!!!! Literally people have so many things they think anime is, which is generally always such a tiny part of such a large medium, it is almost crazy hearing people say anime is "insert uneducated opinion here" , when you know what the medium is capable of having seen many of them. Nobody cares if you hate anime lol, that is people right to like what they want but goddamn it it's annoying when people throw slander at it and then step on people who do.
The same adults who like to discredit anime and the people who watch it will turn around and worship Disney/Pixar movies. I love both and I wish more Americans would give anime a chance. Sure, like you said there's a lot of crap anime out there but the exemplary ones stand head and shoulders above most of the American shows I enjoy in terms of complex stories and character development. A few that come to mind are Fullmetal Alchemist, Death Note, One Piece (the art might be a little "childish" for some plus it's REALLY long so I wouldn't fault people for not wanting to get into that), and Attack on Titan.
To it's credit, _One Piece_ is based on a long-running manga (nearly two decades old) but it has the perfect blend of maturity and childishness as well as a well-written story.
One Piece is fantastic, but, in my opinion, the anime isn't worth the time it takes to watch, i would always suggest reading the manga instead cause you'll not be missing nothing on the animations anyway.
Daftotron Ineed it has superb characters, but I disagree about the story. It is just too long to call it good. It is just shounen. So it means, that the end is definitely, that they find the One Piece and become really really rich. Then they have a lot of children and are the kings and queens of the world.
Just like any other form of media, there's some truly terrible stuff, the majority of it is just mediocre, and then there are a few exceptional pieces that really stand out and rise above their designation as a particular form of media. At a certain point, the quality of a story becomes good enough to justify ignoring any stigma about the actual medium.
That doesn't mean I shouldn't be interested in his opinion, I agree SNK isn't the best anime but it's still pretty enjoyable to watch and I really would like to hear what he has to say
Michael McCallister I am pretty up-to-date with Arkada's videos, also I wasn't necessarily saying it was bad or anything, I liked it, in fact I watched all the episodes in a matter of day. It's great and all and I am not sure if you can relate but I am tired of people bringing it over and over, again and again on every freaking possible video that has anything to do with anime reviews. Its annoying, also its not like they are actually missing out.
I definitely agree that Anime is very important, I love it to death and I hope that one day in the future, people can see as a respectable medium for storytelling instead of mindless entertainment that only kids should watch (which as an Otaku myself really pisses me off). If you do start reviewing anime on a weekly basis, try to look and make Anime Reviews not only for mainstream anime, but also the hidden gems that no one outside of the anime community notices. I know mainstream anime plays a huge role in introducing people to anime, but I feel like there are also other great and fantastic anime out there that DON'T get attention yet are at the same level as Cowboy Bebop, Dragonball Z, Ghost in the Shell, or Attack on Titan (also I noticed you didnt mention many unknown, but great anime in this video, so I'm guessing you havent seen them either so this would be an opportune time seek them out). Just like movies, there's alot of great ones out there waiting to be seen and I personally think that you can help out by giving these anime some recognition and attention they deserve. And hey, watch some Anime Critics here on TH-cam when trying to find new anime to watch. Most of them are very insightful and enthusiastic when it comes to the topic of anime, also it doesn't hurt to support your fellow Otaku haha. I hope you read this comment Chris Stuckmann and I can't wait to see your thoughts on the many anime out there; mainstream or underground :) Sincerely, Tony (The Black Critic Guy)
The thing with anime is that it makes you feel different, new things. I didn't finish Transformers and said "I see life differently now". Whereas I finished NGE, Paprika, GITS, Akira, Spirited Away, and went "Holy shit, what just happened". I LOVE that feeling.
I just recently gave it a try with Steins;Gate and learned to respect the genre. That show was amazing, and has sparked my interest to seek out more shows, and anime movies.
***** The thing about bepop is, it is good, even with the years passing and the animation rising, bepop stills good. Yes, there are better, but it was good before any of those existed, and for that, it deserves the credit it gets. And I would totally recommend it, as it introduces the viewer to some of the quirkiness and extravagance of the shonen genre.
Two of my favorite series - FLCL and Neon Genesis Evangelion, were made within the same production studio, and are two shows I feel like you'd enjoy quite a bit if you haven't checked them out yet. I'm not super into anime, but for some reason those two stuck out a lot to me. The first is pretty insane, and the latter contains some of the common anime features, though I'd never intentionally dumb it down to them if describing it fairly (mecha, fight scenes, cute girls, blahblah) because I feel it might be fair to call it one of the godfathers of that type of anime, considering how it's been around for a while (wouldn't surprise me if someone replied to this and schooled me hard, though lol) But yeah, if you've seen them, let me know what you thought! d: I wouldn't say they're Cowboy Bebop material in status, but NGE is pretty well known, and FLCL airs on Adult Swim from time to time. I pretty much grew up with FLCL, though, Idk why, but that shit hit me hard as I aged from 11-14 lol
Please do have a regular Anime review segment! As far as Mr. Miyazaki films...Kiki Delivery Service really comes to mind. It's not the best of his work in any way, story, art, music....however there is something wonderful, maybe how perfect all the character interactions are...and of course the flying...Let's just say Howl and Nausicaa tie for my favorites as an adult...and Kiki is my inner child's favorite
It's always nice to see film reviewers give anime the respect and attention that it deserves. I do agree that film buffs really need to give the medium more love, though I do not expect them to be avid fans or anything like that. Getting into anime nowadays is hard because there's just so much out there compared to back then, the other thing is that some people have not gotten into it with classics like Bebop and DBZ (like myself, I have never finished Bebop nor have I watched DBZ as the latter is just not my cup of tea, I will finish Bebop someday though). Their favorites and the ones that got them into anime won't always click with others, I certainly know that with my own experience. For people who are interested in getting into anime but want to see works that remind them of Western stories and filmmaking styles retro and contemporary, I recommend: Psycho-Pass Fate/Zero Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (2014 TV series only, don't watch the 2010 film) Serial Experiments Lain Ghost in the Shell Neon Genesis Evangelion Monogatari Series (the style and aesthetic of studio Shaft strongly resembles that of film noir and the French New Wave, especially present in Bakemonogatari, the only warning I'd provide is for the fanservice present) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill (you do not necessarily have to be a fan of mecha for the former, as both are great coming of age stories that are strongly reminiscent of Tarantino films) Fullmetal Alchemist (both series are solid, but I strongly recommend Brotherhood as it is more consistent and satisfying overall) Black Lagoon (also has a very Tarantino style to it as well) There are some others I would strongly recommend that you have already mentioned (Ghibli/Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda, Akira Satoshi Kon's works in particular), but I have admittedly not seen them myself yet or do not find them to be suitable for newcomers (especially if they find they can't get through some of the ones I listed above), so I will leave those omitted for now.
I always find myself suggesting _Baccano!_ to just about everyone. It's such a short and sweet comedy. I just love it! _Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood_ (which you also mentioned) is one of my all time favorite anime (shocking, I know). Then there's _Code Geass_ with its dark story and intelligent protagonist-idiots like Goku, Naruto, and Luffy grind my gears. Finally, I always suggest _Grave of the Fireflies_ to those who automatically assume that all anime are sentai magical girl henshin stuff. That should teach 'em! >)
As someone who has never been a *huge* fan of anime I've never looked down on it or people who love it, and I've always been open to it. Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note are among my favorites so if anyone has any other recommendations that Chris didn't make feel free to lay'em on me!
Bakuman is a good show made by the same guys who made Death Note and Trigun is a personal favorite of mine, a space western, it starts off goofy but it gets serious right around episode 5.
Hunter x Hunter (2011) has gotten a lot of praise amongst the community that likes those. though it ain't finished and you never know when the author is going to take a break (his last break was for 2 years) also depending on how much gore you can handle Berserk has some awesome movies, unfortunately they cover only one arc which is in the middle of the manga so if you want to have the full experience you'll have to read it
The Girl who Lept through Time is a really good watch. Along with Summer Wars. Also an anime that just finished No Game No Life is interesting. Other suggestions would be Yu Yu Hakusho, Black Lagoon, and Samurai Champloo.
I highly, highly recommend Steins;Gate. The first chunk of episodes aren't the most engaging from a plot standpoint, but what it builds to is unforgettable. Easily one of the best shows in general I've seen. Also, the English dub is amazing. So there's that little bonus.
The anime that got me into anime was Death Note, which to this day is my favorite. Since then Ive watched Full Metal Alchemist(and brotherhood), Sword Art Online, Code Geass, Soul Eater, Elfen Lied, Deadman Wonderland and Attack on Titan. I would recommend watching those, if your into anime... Fair warning that Elfen Lied is very violent and has a ton of nudity, but if you can ignore that its pretty good.
Oh my gawd when you said you would like to regularly review Anime I'm excited like a fanboy! :D Its so nice to see one of your favorite movie reviewer talks about Anime! Can't wait man!
I would love yu yu but the late arcs are pretty lackluster in sense, tough its a pretty cool anime to watch. Baske is great for the lolz, but definitely not in my top 10, death note would have been perfect without the second season, the live action for death note is the only live action I like better than the anime. Good series indeed.
For those of you who are skeptical about Anime, watch all 11 of Hayao Miyazaki's films, starting with his first film, The Castle of Cagliostro from 1979, to his last film, The Wind Rises from 2013 and prepare to see greatness unfold in front of your eyes and you will truly see how great Anime can get.
Well my favourite animes are: Fate/Zero, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Beebop, Shihiro, The Wandering Castle, Saber Marionette J, Evangelion, and Saint Seiya (because it was the first anime i ever watch). Anime it's important because (to me at least) helps to see another way of storytelling.
Here are some Anime films I recommend to anyone reading this comment who wants to check out some Japanese animated films: The Little Norse Prince, The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky (my favourite Anime film of all time btw), My Neighbour Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, Ocean Waves, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbours the Yamadas, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Howl's Moving Castle, Tales from Earthsea, Ponyo, Arrietty, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, Millennium Actress, Angel's Egg, Time of Eve, Patema Inverted, A Letter to Momo, 5 Centimetres Per Second, To the Forest of Firefly Lights, The Princess and the Pilot and Metropolis (2001).
+eclipsesonic Jeez dude, why didn't you just say "Every Studio Ghibli Film Ever?" Would've saved you some time. Also every Mamoru Hosoda film is listed, aside from his latest. Hols: Prince of the Sun (Little Norse Prince) Is indeed a very good and very underrrated anime film. It essentially was responsible for starting the medium's trend towards more mature storytelling.
I could have said that, but to save people from checking out what films Ghibli have made, I listed it for them instead. As for Mamoru Hosoda, I haven't seen The Boy and the Beast yet which is why I didn't mention it. I'm glad that you like The Little Norse Prince too!
A great list. Hayao Miyazaki is the bomb. Also, I really love whisper of the heart. I just wanted to say that because it always gets overshadowed by other movies like spirited away. I like spirited away, but watch whisper of the heart. :)
Thank you! I saw what I thought to be an obscure anime at a friend's house as a kid, like 17 years ago. Something about it had me transfixed, but I got sick and had to leave so I never got to finish it. I have tried a number of times over the past 17 years to figure out what it was called so I can watch the whole thing. I didn't expect to ever find it until you called it out by name in this video with the pictures you showed. I have just ordered Princess Mononoke and shall finally have satisfaction nearly 2 decades later. My hat is off to you sir
YES a (possible??) anime reviewer I ACTUALLY like. I hope you review the classics/greats or whatnot. If you're looking for a show/movie (watch the show first though) that has been talked about a lot within the last 5 years, watch Puella Magi Madoka Magica. It's already on netflix. Don't underestimate it just because of the artstyle ;)
There is this one regret that I had during my teens. For my film class we were doing a project on any auteur (director) we wanted. I chose Hayao Miyazaki, only me and a handful of others students knew who that was. Hell, my firggin film teacher didn't even know the works of Hayao Miyazaki!!! What the Hell??? Granted, I'm from the Northern part of England, not the place where a lot of nerds congregate. Yet this project was one of the most best and yet frustrating things I have ever done! I took it from all sides, I had my teacher saying to me "This is why I like having you do projects Abigail, you always come up with something strange." I didn't know whether to take it as a compliment or laugh at her own lack of film knowledge! Then I had some immature little boys in my class saying to me "Anime? Isn't that cartoon porn?" I wanted to slap him for being ignorant and laugh at him for admitting to the whole class and the teacher that he watched animated porn. But that also led to my teacher looking at me doubiously like she was scared that I was ACTUALLY going to show the whole class friggin porn!!!! I'm so glad I escaped from them to be around a lot of like minded people. My one regret is not slapping one boy in the face for saying that Princess Mononoke was one the dumbest things he had ever seen.
A Boydude Reviews It really did suck. A lot has changed since then, and I think if I went back to that school now a lot more kids would know or be into anime. Still want to travel back in time and slap that prick from my class though. 😂
@@MsAbixxx I feel you man. A lot of film fans totally ignore anime thinking it's something weird and if you try to explain to them that it really isn't they just think you're being a triggered weeb when in reality you're literally trying to explain why anime is good. It's very frustrating. I just find it more heartbreaking than anything to have people completely miss out on these incredible experiences.
This channel Doesn't upload vids Don’t lose hope my friend, I’m sure there are plenty of fans in Scotland who love anime. You just gotta look in the right places. Like I said times are changing and anime is slowly entering the mainstream, some don’t like that but I think it’s a good thing. More and more people love and appreciate anime. Plenty of old school anime fans are growing up and entering the film and TV industry, using anime as inspiration for their works. More people proudly declare their nerdy hobbies, I’d say there’s never been a better time to be a geek. Gone were the days when I was teen and I either had to pirate my anime or watch it on TH-cam of all places, haha. Anime exclusive streaming services? The entire Ghibli catalogue on UK Netflix? The anime industry caring about their Western fans, when back then they used to not give a crap? Episode 19 of Demon Slayer trending on Twitter when it came out? There have been plenty of times when random people will stop me and compliment my Totoro handbag. I’m not saying that anime is fully mainstream, but there are a lot more open anime fans out there now. I’m just really happy that I no longer need to hide it like I did as a teen in school, like it was something to be ashamed of.
All of these series being recommended down below, yuck! Lol. On a serious note though watch Jojo's Bizarre Adventure 2012 all the way through Stardust crusaders then read the manga. I used to think that it was over the top and beyond feminine due to their rather flamboyant posing tendencies but I decided to try it out anyway and now I'm hooked, just goes to show you should never judge a book by it's cover. I will say though, part 1 may feel overly cheesy and extremely old school and that's because it is since the series itself is over 20 years old. This series is so renowned even Clint Eastwood has recognized Araki's (Author's surname) work and Araki also have his own deal with Gucci. Models also wore some of his costumes from Jojo down the runway for Gucci events! All in all Jojo is a must see and/or read. If you do try it out just remember one name... Dio Brando!!!!!!
I recommend these anime: Stens;Gate, Mirai Nikki (Future Diary), Code Geass, Fate/Zero, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note and the list goes on.
"Patema Inverted" is a very overlooked Anime film with an original concept, plot and a twist ending that will blow your mind once you understand it, that I think people should definitely check out. It's also got great animation, nice chemistry between the two leads and the end credits song "Patema Inverse" is one of the nicest tunes I think I've ever heard.
I used to be on the side of hating anime and thinking it was weird and creepy. I grew up watching dragon ball z and sailor moon with my sister and ended up watching a scene from evangellion which I found disturbing but after that I fell out of it and grew up relating it to nerdy dudes or weird pornography. But what was odd was that I am a huge fan of animation and am currently an amateur animator and I realized that I should try to expand my tastes. I watched all of Hayao Miyazakis films and the show cowboy bebop and that was all I needed to understand that I was missing out on something for a very long time.
Try School Days, it's a part of the nice boat genre of anime. Jokes aside, I'm glad you enjoyed Cowboy Bebop. My taste in anime is romance/shounen/ecchi/action lol I've been watching anime now for over 15 years and my love for it has only grown since. Hope your new found (again?) interest in it will lead to something magical.
I honestly feel sorry for people who look down on anime. They don't realize that anime is a media and it holds different age demographic subject Matter, and holds different genres like any other medium like TV, Books, movies, ect. I love DC and Marvel but anime and manga is just a lot more diverse and tells well written stories without rebooting them every single decade.
I'm not much of an anime fan. But I've seen a few damn good ones. The best I've seen is "Katanagatari", which I would love to see you review! The story may span 12 episodes but it is a compelling journey that boasts breathtaking animation, complex characterization, and intense twists and turns. By the time you get to the 3rd episode, you will be hooked, wanting to see more. Finishing the series is bound to leave you thinking for hours on end about the philosophical notions that each episode and character arc conveys. I'm surprised that not very many people know about it, which is why I hope that you review it and help raise interest in a hidden gem. If a person who doesn't normally care about anime loves it, then you know it must be great! Thank you for your reviews and insights, as always, Chris!
Having someone with a deeper knowledge of film to respectfully review our favorite anime films is something I, and I can't be alone here, have been wanting for. media1.onsugar.com/files/2013/11/12/735/n/3019466/e8eb780a56e53068_clap.xxxlarge/i/Happy-Clap.gif
What grinds my gears is some people like certain anime, but will declare that they do not like anime. I had two elementary school cousins who rudely told me they didn’t like anime (despite knowing I’m an avid fan). The kicker is that I fully know one of them binged The Promised Neverland season 2 in one night (declaring it will be the only anime she is willing to watch), and the other cousin rather fully enjoyed Pokémon and Avatar The Last Airbender (not made by Japan but you get my point). It’s like they’re afraid to admit they like it because they know there is a stigma around it. It’s an unfortunate reality but I am optimistic that it will be accepted by the general public sooner or later. I think this because anime popularity gets stronger each year, and I think to myself “comic books used to be looked down upon as something for oddballs, and now it’s taken over the world”. I see anime in a similar position
I'm glad you're gonna review Anime regularly Chris. Some of the Anime I recommend are as follows: -Hunter X Hunter (2011). This is a brilliant series. The story is phenomenal and often delves into psychological themes, the action incredible, the characters are great, and the animation is absolutely breathtaking. -Bleach. Its one of the big 3 for a reason. 'Nuff said. Do avoid the fillers though lol -Yu Yu Hakusho. This is a classic that should not be missed. -Rurouni Kenshin. Another classic. Also, check out the live action movie. I dare say its the best Anime adaption out there. -Death Note. This Anime has one of the most engaging and intelligent plots I've seen. You'll be into almost immediately. -Attack On Titan (Shingeki No Kyojin). Need I say more?
Its rather simple to find a list of fillers and skip them. Also, its not difficult at all to pick up where the Anime left off in the Manga. The length COULD be an issue to some, but I digress. Considering Bleach was one of the first Anime I got in to years and years ago, I can tell you firsthand that it serves just fine as a gateway Anime.
HXH dives into philosophical themes?! LOL themes aren't serious in HXH and for the most part they are very shonen like . It's easily one of the most pretentious shonen anime / manga out there .
I said psychological, actually. And Hunter X Hunter's themes ARE serious. I don't know what you've been watching. In fact, I question whether or not you actually have watched HXH. Allow me to illuminate you. Gon's entire backstory deals with rather serious themes. I mean how are abandonment and bastardization NOT serious themes? Look at Kurapika. His entire character has to do with morals, right and wrong, and revenge. A core theme of the Chimera Ant arc is the animosity of humans, and how monstrous we can become when pushed too far. The Chimera Ants themselves are the manifestation of this, as they were created from the Queen's consumption of humans. Netero's decision to annihilate not only Meruem, but the entire Ant race itself, is more proof. The way Gon inhumanely killed Pitou is even more proof. Gon's actions are the perfect example of someone's psychological state when unstable. You think HXH is "pretentious?" Well I suppose it makes sense that you would think this , given that you can't even appreciate the underlying themes this series has.
This. This is the sort of video all people who think anime is nothing but cute girls and shonen crap need to watch. Its a really underappreciated medium (true there are vocal fans but a lot of people dislike the medium entirely).
Kyrios_the_Spookster And that's seriously fucked up, also please don't be one of those the Anime Elitist that consider Shonen Anime to be crap or trash, please because there's a reason why it's the most popular and mainstream biggest form of anime there is.
@Bouya I hate to be that guy... But I agree with you tbh. Like I don't wanna be a dick to shonen fans but it's definitely far from Perfect. Most shonen suffer from the same problems and a lot of them are overly drawn out and just dumb action shows with little complexity. There are of course exceptions but in general, shonen has a lot of problems with a lot of it's works but if you enjoy it you're more than welcome to
Your experience resonates with so many of us who felt the same thing as we found and fell in love with anime. Most responses I got as a teenager were as follows: 1. “Oh, you like Pokémon?” Basically insinuating I was childish for watching anime. As you said, most westerners think cartoons are for kids. 2. “So you’re into that animated porn?” No, actually I’m not... 3. “You’re just a nerd.” Again, only weirdos and creeps watch anime... 🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for posting this video as I believe it does offer so much more than what most people believe. Some stories have evoked wonder, dread, inspiration, life lessons and much more. Even more so than many American media forms.
He's gonna start reviewing anime!? That's awesome!! I'm looking forward to his review of Attack on Titan.... I wonder if he's seen Fate/Zero.... That I would like to see him review
Kind of a fun fact: The recent movie Edge of Tomorrow was based on the manga called All You Need Is Kill. It has the same exact plot, the only difference are the characters names. Also in Japan they renamed it to All You Need Is Kill and they loved the movie. About Attack on Titan though...eh I would give it a C+. It had a very interesting story, great animation, and some really epic fight scenes, however the show completely falls flat on its face when it comes to characters and the "emotional" moments." That's just my opinions on it though.
what?!?! you mean to tell me that the moment when Erin came out of that Titan's neck and was reunited with Mikasa (after she thought he was dead and put on a tough face) and she broke down and cried out loud; didn't do anything for you?!?! after we were all convinced he was dead?!
***** No I watched the subbed version on Crunchyroll last year. Also even though the voice acting was good the character of Eren was just annoying and as for Mikasa and Levi they were just bland. I like to refer to Eren as Sasuke 2.0.
There are anime that are on par with some of most critically acclaimed movies and books, like Space Odyssey, Lord of the Rings, Shawshank Redemption, Silence of the Lamps, Pulp Fiction or The Godfather. If one likes a tightly written story, there is Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Ergo Proxy, Neon Genesis Evangelion. There are also abstract shows that encourage contemplation and give a more critical or clear view of our world like Serial Experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Mawaru Penguindrum, Mushishi, Aria, The tatami Galaxy, Haibane Renmei or revolutionary Girl Utena. Shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Gintama, Gurren Lagann and the Ghibli movies are some really good and easily comprehensible shows that are abundant in messages.
Chris check out Samurai Champloo if you love Cowboy Bebop so much, its the same studio and just as great in my opinion. Also series like Darker Than Black, East of Eden, Wolf and Spice, Baccano, and if you want wacky as hell, Sgt. Frog and Soul Eater.
6:06 - i was so hyped . my favorite movie reviewer reviewing my recently favorite anime that i thought was a master piece. wow ! and since we're all saying anime that deserves to be checked out, let's not miss out DEATH NOTE.
I know I'm a little late on this. I've been watching your reviews for a little while now and I have to say that after hearing what you said about Cowboy Bebop... It makes me enjoy your channel a Lot More.
WHAT!? No mention about Neon Genesis Eva? What the Hell. that was probably the first Mature anime, a true work of art form a direction and writing standpoint.
This video alone sold me to continue following your work. I live in Argentina, in Latin America anime viewing if fairly common, so I was really surprised to find out that Anime is not very common in the States. Anime has given me so much already that I can't put it into words. I watch movies for the "viewing" entertainment, I watch anime for the "feeling" entertainment. It makes you feel things, think things and it makes your mind work. Anime is way, WAY more than a "cartoon for kids". I wish more people had the opportunity to see and experience that. So, you, Sir, are awesome. I'll follow your channel everyday. Keep up the excellent work.
Anime's efforts to expand its fanbase very much suffer from the perception of the current fanbase. As you said, people thought you were "one of those people." That is a sad, but pretty true statement. I'm glad I've given and am giving anime a chance, but the fanbase is rather aggressive in their support, which can be good, but is generally a turnoff to the public. It's like Doctor Who. I figure I'd like Doctor Who if I watched it, but the fans I know of that show are so aggressive with their support, I don't ever want to watch it.
I literally clapped when Chris said he'd be reviewing anime. Wooooooohhooooo!!!. Obvious anime fan right here. Thanks Chris! I agree with a lot of what you said here. More people should really give anime a try. It's not all about cheesy kids stuff.
Chris, I am what you could consider an "anime hater." Please review anime movies and TV shows more, I want to see what I can get into with a clear and concise guide. I absolutely adore everything by Hiyao Miyazaki, but cannot stand practically anything on TV. I want my horizons to be expanded though.
Since you already mentioned Miyazaki, it's a bit hard for me to point you in the direction of some good anime but one I've always loved is Cowboy Bebop. The show is awesome and there was even a movie that I really enjoyed and I would definitely recommend seeing it. Oh, and I have to say that it's so refreshing to see someone being open minded in the youtube comment section of all places. It's not every day that you see someone saying "I don't really like this but I'm willing to give it a shot anyway." It's really nice to see. :)
If you like your anime a little more thoughtful, I highly recommend anything by Yuasa Masaaki. Also, last year's The Eccentric Family was the best thing I've seen in a while.
Hey! I'm so proud of you for making this video. I also think that animation is a way of making stories, so they can be comedies, dramas, sci-fi, etc. Also some can be more childish but others can be more for adults, and there are a lot of great ones that are worth seeing. Some are really masterpieces as you have said. I will be following your anime reviews from now on, because I love the ones you showed in this video. Moreover, I have to say I like your channel in general!
Neon Genesis Evangelion and FLCL are my favorites and I highly recommend those. Evangelion is the best mind bender I've seen, and my film viewing count is over 1,500 and growing. And Chris, no, pleas,e don't go into Attack on Titan...
Chris I was wondering if you've seen Fullmetal alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood? ( Brotherhood is the reboot that follows the manga. You probably already knew that lol)
Please review more anime. I accidentally fell into this channel yesterday looking to update my anime titles and so far I have I have lost count of how many reviews I have seen, they have been spot on every time, good work. I also agree with you, Anime has had a massive influence western cinema, so please review more anime. GJ!
Drudenfusz I will admit that Korra isnt as great as the last airbender, but that is more of a testament of how great the last airbender. For me the last airbender is the greatest cartoon of all time... korra would be top 10-20 somewhere.
ARandomGuy Pokemon was created in the 90's and Dragon Ball Z was approaching the height of it's popularity. Anime may have started to become more popular in the 80's really blew up in the 90's.
Dr Doom Certified Blogger I'm aware reached it's height of popularity in the 90's but considering the popularity of Fist of the North Star and Mobile Suit Gundam and most of all Akira, I consider it a boom.
ARandomGuy Yeah but Pokemon took it to the next level. Not only is it the most successful anime's ever but one of the most successful animated shows in history. Then shows like Dragon Ball z and Sailor moon became along and then there was shows based of toys like Beyblade and Yu Gi Oh crushed proving that anime can be just as successful(if not more)than American animation. I don't know where you lived but grew up in the height of Beyblade's popularity and it seemed like every kid on the planet had one. The 80's might have been the first big push to popularity but the 90's/early 2000's was what really commercialized anime in the west.
ARandomGuy Actually it started more in the 70s with Mach-Go-Go-Go coming to America as Speed Racer Then you had Battle of the Planet and G-Force which were bastardized versions of Gatchaman Mazinger Z had a short run as Tranzor Z Grendizer, Getter Robo G, Danguard Ace, Gaiking and Starzinger made up a show called Force Five Voltron was made up two shows Golion and Dairugger; there was going to be third called Albegas. Robotech was adapted from SDF Macross, SDC Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada
I know anime was thing to the West in 70's and 80's but from what I've heard I wouldn't big boom. Then again I doubt I have as much knowledge of that time compared to you.
Hey Chris, great video. I've loved anime for about 15 years now, starting with DBZ and Tenchi Muyo. Yes!, please start doing more anime. Such an excellent and misunderstood way of storytelling entertainment. Btw, immediately subscribed when you said Princess Mononoke was your favorite Ghibili film too (Spirited Away close second).
I used to thought that anime was just for kids and geeks.
Then I saw Death note and realize how wrong I was.
+ellamateix that happened to me too. I watched Death Note and Code Geass, and i realized i was being so ignorant for not giving it a chance.
Watch attack on Titan it's a good one
+ellamateix for me it was death note and aot
+ellamateix With me it was Steins;Gate :)
ikr
Bravo good sir! I wish I was able to properly verbalise similar thoughts without sounding bias as an anime reviewer myself. I look forward to watching your reviews! Good luck with them :)
My nigga arkada, hows it going?
so you got the "good sir" nice gent and then you got the "My Nigga" nigga
For those who aren't particularly into anime and are interested , check out Arkada he's one of the best out there and has tens of reviews, hopefully Chris checks his work out and pick up a thing or two from him
Thanks for pointing this video out. Totally gonna show it to some friends who cant except my opinion because "my opinion dose not count because all i watch is anime"... -_-
Arkada, the best anime reviewer on TH-cam
Cowboy Bebop is how I fell in love with my husband. LOL
+Cule Chick lol awesome love story that is
Superman13195 we met at anime club. He showed me a couple episodes and i was hooked. I couldn't wait to snuggle up on his couch and watch more. By the end of the series we were best friends. After soul eater we were lovers. 5 years of anime and we are happily married with a kid. But it all started hete.
+Superman13195 Because you apparently missed the "happily married with a kid" part.
+Superman13195 Oh youtube drama. Oh commenting idiots. I haven't missed you for such a long time! How have you been? Wait, actually my sexy husband is calling so i dont care. catch you later!
+Cule Chick fucking weeb
I see Anime as just a medium, I have no problem watching a live action movie or cartoon as long as the story is good, because thats what counts for me. :-)
Fair enough xD although its funny when if you watch enough anime, live action looks fake lol
xisumavoid Well, it is a medium, not a genre. Anime itself has all the same genres as live-action; horror, action, drama, romance, scifi, fantasy etc. It's just different medium.
Didn't Expect to see you here. Love your snapshot videos! Keep up the amazing work!
You're here?
Orestria you are so right that it baffles me how people could be so stupid.
+Orestria exactly , these people have to dumb for saying that.
still waiting for Attack on Titan review
+Olegh Rozman yep that's what I was like when I watched this again
+Onur Kara Praying it would come out as soon as AoT season 2 premieres.
+Olegh Rozman AoT is pretty overrated.. not to say it's bad but it's most definitely not like the next DBZ or Cowboy Bebop
apercarlo I know. I just want to watch Chris review about it
***** im just happy he's reviewing legit animes like wolf children and princess kaguya.. rather than talking about overrated popular shows like most anime reviewers
"I want to regularly review anime"
*doesnt review anime*
It's rare though because he mostly review movies.
Chris is going to be doing more Anime related content this year. Here's what he said on his Twitter:
twitter.com/Chris_Stuckmann/status/816159899600244736
Where is the Attack on Titan review?
I just don't think the seasonal cycle works for Chris, unless he wants to watch anime and movies 24/7 to be able to cover everything.
Btw thank you for finally reviewing Attack on Titan. That's my fuckin show right there.
Ujjwala Harithsa i agree, L
Ujjwala Harithsa well said, Ryuzaki
It's awesome to have a movie critic who truly appreciates anime art form.
and here we are 2 years later, not a single review of attack on titans.
Cus attack on Titan sucks ass
I'd rather he review classic anime rather than newer anime. He should do a review of Akira or Jin Roh.
I rather any anime!! Cause I haven't seen him review anime for a while now.
Exactly
Its always so weird to see youtubers comment on others video's(even though I know their regular people too. Its just...weird)
mark12033 Fun story, one time I commented on a Funimation video and these people recognized me from my interactions with a fellow J-Taku member on Twitter. The world is scary small sometimes.
I hate how people look down on a medium and not the content.
Hi 42!! Love ur videos!!! Can u review a show called soul eater? Its really awsome in my opinion.
Dude... I've been trying so hard to get JeremyJahns to review Spirited Away... or at least one Miyazaki film. Damn... he is missing out.
The anime genre just has so much rewatchability as well as moments where you continually think in your head. Akira, Perfect Blue and the Berserk 90s series, Death Note series, DbZ... all never fail to disappoint.
Holy shit Cowboy Bebop has a higher rating on Imdb than freaking Empire strikes back!
Holy crap! O.o
I just looked. Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, also a 9.0 on IMDB.
Kinda weird but I've seen you comment on a lot of videos I've seen as of late.
Leon Lind TV shows have generally a higher rating than movies. How i met your mother have a 8.5, Apocalypse Now and Gladiator also has a 8.5. You cant really compare a TV show rating and a movie rating
TESB (1980) is movies category not tv shows category.
Cowboy Bebop is the highest rated movie on Letterboxd and it’s not even a movie! Yes I know that there is a Cowboy Bebop movie but I’m talking about the show. The show is the highest rated thing on a website that’s for movies.
One thing I think is actually really important to point out is that animation is a medium, not a genre.
By that logic, all live action movies and TV shows are in the same genre. It doesn't make any sense.
Steins; Gate!
+Liam Kitchen One of my favorites for sure! It's great and a lot of people don't even know about it. Damn shame
El Psy Congroo
Tu turu😇
FUCK YES! It's better than even Cowboy Bebop in my humble opinion.
Erm... Death Note?
Daftotron This.
One Piece is fantastic, but, in my opinion, the anime isn't worth the time it takes to watch, i would always suggest reading the manga instead cause you'll not be missing nothing on the animations anyway.
Daftotron
Ineed it has superb characters, but I disagree about the story.
Why hasn't he reviewed Attack on Titan yet?
lets face it, SnK was a good anime but nowhere near awesome as many people claim it to be
That doesn't mean I shouldn't be interested in his opinion, I agree SNK isn't the best anime but it's still pretty enjoyable to watch and I really would like to hear what he has to say
I thought it was pretty great. My thoughts on it are basically what Glass reflections said about it if u wanna check out that channels review.
Its annoying, also its not like they are actually missing out.
nab rai Yea, I get where you're coming from. I watched it a bit late though so people bringing it up a lot hasn't started to bother me yet.
Do reviewz on "Fullmetal Alchemist" Plz
+Deadpool YES!
+Deadpool Brotherhood!
+Deadpool HECK TO THE YES (Brotherhood to be specific yes please)
***** Yeah, they are both great and have there strengths and weaknesses.
Yeah he should review brotherhood
Now and Then, Here and There; Samurai Champloo, and Neon Genesis Evangelion are also great series to get into
Where the fuck is the Attack on Titan review Chris ??
+Gent M April 2016! April 2016! APRIL 2016 ALREADY!!!!!!!
I hope you read this comment Chris Stuckmann and I can't wait to see your thoughts on the many anime out there; mainstream or underground :)
Sincerely,
Tony (The Black Critic Guy)
The thing with anime is that it makes you feel different, new things. I didn't finish Transformers and said "I see life differently now".
Whereas I finished NGE, Paprika, GITS, Akira, Spirited Away, and went "Holy shit, what just happened". I LOVE that feeling.
If you love Cowboy Bebop, you NEED to watch Samurai Champloo!!
I just recently gave it a try with Steins;Gate and learned to respect the genre. That show was amazing, and has sparked my interest to seek out more shows, and anime movies.
Give Death Note a try. Two episodes - that's all you need. If the first two episodes don't hook you, nothing will. Fate/Zero is also great.
Mick drew Fate/stay night is also getting a remake soon too.
Sub oXero I know, so hyped.
Alright clicked play video, now I'm just gonna wait until I hear the words "Cowboy" and "Bebop"
1:56 Well that didn't take long.
***** I can't even think of a hundred anime, let alone a hundred anime that are that good
*****
Most anime suck to be honest...
*****
No i have seen about 30 anime and 10 were mind blowing. The rest were average or shit.
Ghost in the Shell is my favorite anime of all time. And I started watching it from Toonami when I was a kid.
For people who are interested in getting into anime but want to see works that remind them of Western stories and filmmaking styles retro and contemporary, I recommend:
Psycho-Pass
Fate/Zero
Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (2014 TV series only, don't watch the 2010 film)
Serial Experiments Lain
Ghost in the Shell
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Monogatari Series (the style and aesthetic of studio Shaft strongly resembles that of film noir and the French New Wave, especially present in Bakemonogatari, the only warning I'd provide is for the fanservice present)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill (you do not necessarily have to be a fan of mecha for the former, as both are great coming of age stories that are strongly reminiscent of Tarantino films)
Fullmetal Alchemist (both series are solid, but I strongly recommend Brotherhood as it is more consistent and satisfying overall)
Black Lagoon (also has a very Tarantino style to it as well)
There are some others I would strongly recommend that you have already mentioned (Ghibli/Miyazaki, Mamoru Hosoda, Akira Satoshi Kon's works in particular), but I have admittedly not seen them myself yet or do not find them to be suitable for newcomers (especially if they find they can't get through some of the ones I listed above), so I will leave those omitted for now.
That should teach 'em! >)
Serial experiment lain if you are able to get it though
As someone who has never been a *huge* fan of anime I've never looked down on it or people who love it, and I've always been open to it. Code Geass, Fullmetal Alchemist and Death Note are among my favorites so if anyone has any other recommendations that Chris didn't make feel free to lay'em on me!
Bakuman is a good show made by the same guys who made Death Note and Trigun is a personal favorite of mine, a space western, it starts off goofy but it gets serious right around episode 5.
Lupin The Third: A Woman Called Fujiko Mine is really good. It's only about 14 episodes long.
You should definitely try "Monster"..One of the best Masterpieces ever!
So true and when are they going to make an anime of 20th century boy
I'm watching it right now (Ep30) and I definitely agree
omg monster changed me. it is incredbile
Is this the one about Japanese doctor who is being accused as a murderer..??
Yep
I'm totally watching Perfect Blue now because I LOVE Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan, Pi, and of course The Fountain.
Brian Morse how was it?
Cowboy bepop, Baccano!, Clannad, Full Metal Alchemist brotherhood and Steins Gate are my all time favorites.
And of course, any miyazaki flim, paprika and perfect blue are just genious.
Death Note, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Kuroko No Basket! :)
You have great taste
I would love yu yu but the late arcs are pretty lackluster in sense, tough its a pretty cool anime to watch. Baske is great for the lolz, but definitely not in my top 10, death note would have been perfect without the second season, the live action for death note is the only live action I like better than the anime. Good series indeed.
TheAlfahDj I agree with Death Note thing and f you didn't like Yu Yu watch Hunter X Hunter.
Madoka Magica Chris... you should really watch that anime and give out your thoughts to everyone about it.
You will absolutely love it.
I loved spirited away.
@@shubham2076 not the best one nor one of the bests but if you like it thé watch code geas ( you will get used to the art style )
Well my favourite animes are:
Fate/Zero, Rurouni Kenshin, Cowboy Beebop, Shihiro, The Wandering Castle, Saber Marionette J, Evangelion, and Saint Seiya (because it was the first anime i ever watch). Anime it's important because (to me at least) helps to see another way of storytelling.
Here are some Anime films I recommend to anyone reading this comment who wants to check out some Japanese animated films: The Little Norse Prince, The Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky (my favourite Anime film of all time btw), My Neighbour Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies, Kiki's Delivery Service, Only Yesterday, Porco Rosso, Ocean Waves, Pom Poko, Whisper of the Heart, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbours the Yamadas, Spirited Away, The Cat Returns, Howl's Moving Castle, Tales from Earthsea, Ponyo, Arrietty, From Up on Poppy Hill, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children, Millennium Actress, Angel's Egg, Time of Eve, Patema Inverted, A Letter to Momo, 5 Centimetres Per Second, To the Forest of Firefly Lights, The Princess and the Pilot and Metropolis (2001).
eclipsesonic Awesome list,love Spirited away.
+JAKE THE DOG, Love Whisper of the Heart!
2016 and still he hasn't done a review on attack on titan.
and it is for that same reason.... it's 2016
+andres iglesias moradiellos What do you mean?
He will do it when season 2 comes
So never
2017 already
because its shit
Oh and EVANGELION? If you haven't seen that yet you need to get on it!
(commenting again) Serial Experiments Lain is also a classic in my book... and is more relevant today than it ever was.
Madoka Magica CHANGED ME! I'm a chnged man ;__: the feels stayed with me long after it was over. A MUST watch!
Oh, Madoka Magica... How I love that show.
Madoka's one of my favourites, for sure.
Great video. Anime gets me more emotionally involved compared to movies/television. I don't know anyone who didn't cry during Anohana or Clannad.
chris will mostly review the cool animes not those....
Dragonfury3000
What are you talking about?
Kimi ga Nozomu Eien was definitely the most emotionally draining anime I have ever seen. Next would be Toradora and then Anohana.
*****
I'll definitely check those out. Thanks.
Damm. That sucks. It's a shame some people don't understand anime.
A Boydude Reviews
It really did suck.
@@MsAbixxx hey atleast you don't live in scotland because finding anime/manga fans here is next to impossible.
This channel Doesn't upload vids
Don’t lose hope my friend, I’m sure there are plenty of fans in Scotland who love anime.
This is the only comment here I can find that's about JoJo.
What the fuck.
VoyeurTheNinja You should like... totally sub to my channel then lol.
I am a fan of anime. I want to say that now I am more excited about your reviews. And I look forward to seeing more and more anime reviews
More Anime reviews needed @Chris
I'm BEGGING everyone to watch Baccano. It's one of the best anime series I've seen in a long time.
Still don't see what the hype is about for Baccano. Pretentious plot, stupid characters, and ear-wrenching dubbing.
I love Baccano! :D really cool!
Baccano is easily the one of the best animes to come out in recent years .
If you like Baccano! you have to watch Durarara. It's made by the same people
Both Baccano! and Durarara are fantastic. everyone should watch both.
I recommend these anime: Stens;Gate, Mirai Nikki (Future Diary), Code Geass, Fate/Zero, Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood, Death Note and the list goes on.
I agree with all of those except Future Diary because the writing is awfully halarious imo.
All great shows except Future Diary lol
Forgot to add Elfen Lied, Darker than Black, Black Lagoon, Gurren Lagann.
***** I would also have to disagree with Elfen Lied for the exact same reason as Future Diary...
Alex Cook I really don't like them both either. I think I found more enjoyment out of future diary though
Can you please do a review Death Note, it is my favorite anime. Filled with some of the coolest and sophisticated characters in all entertainment.
***** lol you "boat" god you're terrible LOL
I will say what I say to everyone. Unusual is not the same thing as bad. We naturally shy away from new or abstract ideas... we really shouldn't
Why do you have to hate on Evangelion? Best anime that ever graced humanity.
Yep its great but as a kid it was unsettling to watch
Having someone with a deeper knowledge of film to respectfully review our favorite anime films is something I, and I can't be alone here, have been wanting for.
media1.onsugar.com/files/2013/11/12/735/n/3019466/e8eb780a56e53068_clap.xxxlarge/i/Happy-Clap.gif
dude i fucking love paprika!!!!! that movie changed my whole perspective of anime T_T
+apercarlo Same with me. Watching it at the age of 12 just totally blew my brain.
I hope you have seen "Neon Genesis Evangelion", it's pretty amazing. Cheers!
Can i suggest you Puella Magi Madoka Magica. it dosent look lime much very kidly and girly, but it's actually really mature and good
It would be entertaining to see him go "Well I certainly wasn't expecting that"
wasnt suggesting that he review it, just suggesting a watch
I'm glad you're gonna review Anime regularly Chris.
Some of the Anime I recommend are as follows:
-Hunter X Hunter (2011). This is a brilliant series. The story is phenomenal and often delves into psychological themes, the action incredible, the characters are great, and the animation is absolutely breathtaking.
-Bleach. Its one of the big 3 for a reason. 'Nuff said. Do avoid the fillers though lol
-Yu Yu Hakusho.
No, he likes more film ones or short series.
Denzel Romero these recommendations weren't necessarily for Chris, but for people who are just getting into Anime.
Kyrios_the_Spookster Well said.
Most responses I got as a teenager were as follows:
Thanks for posting this video as I believe it does offer so much more than what most people believe.
I would LOVE it if you did anime reviews. However some people are close minded, and just as a warning: those reviews may not get that many views.
The ending from "Edge of Tomorrow" is very different then from the light novel.
***** No I watched the subbed version on Crunchyroll last year. Also even though the voice acting was good the character of Eren was just annoying and as for Mikasa and Levi they were just bland. I like to refer to Eren as Sasuke 2.0.
Rod Ilunga Yes, because of course the main character that's been built up would die then and there. Please, I saw that coming from a mile away.
crazyangst12 Some things were different but I'm talking about the overall idea of the story.
There are anime that are on par with some of most critically acclaimed movies and books,
like Space Odyssey, Lord of the Rings, Shawshank Redemption,
Silence of the Lamps, Pulp Fiction
or The Godfather.
If one likes a tightly written story, there is Legend of the Galactic
Heroes, Ergo Proxy, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
There are also abstract shows that encourage contemplation and give a
more critical or clear view of our world like Serial Experiments Lain,
Texhnolyze, Mawaru Penguindrum, Mushishi, Aria, The tatami Galaxy,
Haibane Renmei or revolutionary Girl Utena.
Shows like Fullmetal Alchemist, Gintama, Gurren Lagann and the Ghibli
movies are some really good and easily comprehensible shows that are
abundant in messages.
Samurai Champloo is fricken awesome. I sometimes had more fun with it than with Bebop.
Dust IV Oh right, well they sound good either way.
Awesome Chris, do it, make anime reviews.
Yeah he needs to watch Evangelion. The series/movies are probably some of my biggest sources of inspiration
mydearalice Hell, End Of Eva is on a whole new level...
First Mature Anime? You never saw Legend of the Galactic Heroes did you? It's Game of Thrones in Space just without Gore and Sex.
Not everyone watched everything ok? -.-
a Fuck It rating alongside boku no picu and school days
cowboy bebop hands down is the best of the best I LOVE IT SOOOOO MUCH
holy shit I've finally found a movie critic who talks about anime too.
Well then watch texhnolyze very slow pace but the last 4 episode make up for it and I kinda want to kill my self after watching it
Watch the movie Garden of word animation is literary porn for your eye
Thank you guys!
2:27 - The Moment that got me into Anime back in 2016 when I first discovered Chris and saw this video.
Chris! Watch Evangelion and End of Eva! Shit is crazy and cerebral.
Fullemtal Alechemist: Brotherhood! Please check it out, it's an OUTSTANDING anime!
I think Akira is the best anime film ever made.
Mason Brown it’s real fucking good
People look down on anime because they've only been exposed to shows like Pokemon and Naruto. It's a shame, really. They're missing out on so much
Chris I was wondering if you've seen Fullmetal alchemist or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood? ( Brotherhood is the reboot that follows the manga. You probably already knew that lol)
Please review more anime. I accidentally fell into this channel yesterday looking to update my anime titles and so far I have I have lost count of how many reviews I have seen, they have been spot on every time, good work. I also agree with you, Anime has had a massive influence western cinema, so please review more anime. GJ!
Have you seen Avatar The Last Airbender? it's not technically an anime but its very anime inspired it is the best show ever seen.
Please review.
Agreed. That story line is too good
Even though it looks like it its not an anime
Sadly, Korra isn't on a par the original show... but third season is good so far.
Drudenfusz I will admit that Korra isnt as great as the last airbender, but that is more of a testament of how great the last airbender. For me the last airbender is the greatest cartoon of all time... korra would be top 10-20 somewhere.
Any other Code Geass fans?
Code Geass is in my top 5 series to watch before u die.
Code Geass is my favorite anime along with Clannad.
I hated Suzaku, he was a traitor to his people.
Almost finished with Season 1
"Starting with Attack On Titan" 😂😂😂😂
Pretty sure the first big anime boom in The West was in the 80's, not the 90's. And anime is a medium not a genre.
ARandomGuy Actually it started more in the 70s with Mach-Go-Go-Go coming to America as Speed Racer
Then you had Battle of the Planet and G-Force which were bastardized versions of Gatchaman
Mazinger Z had a short run as Tranzor Z
Grendizer, Getter Robo G, Danguard Ace, Gaiking and Starzinger made up a show called Force Five
Voltron was made up two shows Golion and Dairugger; there was going to be third called Albegas.
Robotech was adapted from SDF Macross, SDC Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada
I know anime was thing to the West in 70's and 80's but from what I've heard I wouldn't big boom. Then again I doubt I have as much knowledge of that time compared to you.
I don't get how people hate Anime. It's fucking amazing
*****
i agree with you honestly but you really should watch monster , kaiji , or every madhouse anime they are all awesome
Haters can go fuck themself

Hunter X Hunter Chimera Ant arc... best story arc I've ever seen; live action included
A...fucking...men.
It was great, but it was too fucking long, the run time of that arc was almost as long as the previous 4 arcs before it!
A lot of people who don't like anime don't understand it

Hey Chris, great video. I've loved anime for about 15 years now, starting with DBZ and Tenchi Muyo.
Yes!, please start doing more anime. Such an excellent and misunderstood way of storytelling entertainment.
Btw, immediately subscribed when you said Princess Mononoke was your favorite Ghibili film too (Spirited Away close second).
Akira is just epic.
