I’ve been a fan of Consuelo Balsan ever since I chanced across a second copy of her “The Glitter and the Gold” in a Charlottesville book shop. I think it would be interesting for you to interview Serena Balfour on her recollections of Consuelo. I enjoyed this interview with Lady Henrietta Spencer-Churchill very much.
I absolutely love that Julie is so unpretentious, she doesn’t get gussied up to match the home. Rather, she brings the splendor of these stately homes down to earth. Julie, you make it feel that we regular folks can delight in these homes as well. You have our hearts!❤
I grew up in Massachusetts and went to NewPort quite often as a teenager and young adult. I remember begging my mother to buy me the book. “The Glitter and the Gold”, when I was about 12 years old. I had just discovered F. Scott FitzGerald at that age and ate up that info. Lovely memories of summers, polo games etc., it was such a sweet little town at that time. 🥰
This video has been very interesting to me , I sometimes have a little trouble following the lines of inheritance , because I know so little about these families. We did on a holiday one year 😮visit Rode Island and the vandebuilts “cottage “ a couple of other houses along that strip. ❤July you do such an amazing job with the interviews. You are clear and precise in your questions and speech. I can follow you easily. I will go now and find the book the gold and the glitter.
Winston knew Consuela Vanderbilt very well and used to visit them at their house in (wait for it) San Diego where he painted soooo many of his paintings. 😮

Beautiful conversation and learning some history

Thank you for this marvelous and rare interview.
Thank you so much!!!
Fabulous conversation. I love hearing the stories from the gilded age. I’ve toured some of the stately homes in New Port and they’re not cottages 😂.

There is also the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, NY which is maintained as National Historic Site by the US Parks Dept.
I wish people would learn the diff between 'homey' and 'homely'.
❤😊
The bouquet behind her, wow. Everything is just perfect in there.
