Oil and Gas Exploration people figure all that out 30 years ago! When everyone was dealing with meg stuff back in the 70's the oil and gas geophysics were dealing with tb. Today they are dealing with cpu / storage that is out of this world and their stuff make facebook / google look like they are playing with "model a ford" car...while the oil and gas geophysical people are driving around in new sports cars. Massive computing power and storage.
Ever heard of PCI DSS? (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standards) You seem like a great communicator, I think you'd be great in helping companies train their IT departments to talk to auditors.
I think one of the main points that you missed is hackability. The Dell, and HP, and all the name brand servers are closed source as can be and if you have a particular need for YOUR datacenter you're stuck waiting for someone to create one for you. Also these name brand servers are EXPENSIVE and when you don't want their small proprietary features and support, then what you are paying for the most is the branding, just like paying more for a shirt because it says Nike in the front.
100,000 physical servers per center? That is a lot. Putting server centers in underground caves would save on cooling. Actually I think they already do that. Go-daddy puts 100s of paying "space" clients on a single box when buying there standard $10 service.
Well done Eli. If you would like an update on announcements from the OCP Summit 2016 then see www.datacenterdynamics.com/servers-storage/white-space-32-the-open-compute-special/95903.fullarticle
Very persuasive voice and speech pattern. It's easy to concentrate on what you're saying.
Thanks for the introduction, I've never heard of this until now
Oh, wow. The info at 16:45 is fascinating. I thought this future would never happen.
This is an interesting write up on the savings from vanity free design...

Wouldn't it be easier and cheaper just taking the logos off? It is not just about logos, this is rediculous.
