    Nintendo's attitude is why I will never feel guilty pirating any games that are no longer manufactured, because that is the only way you will ever play them.

    the 3ds homebrew community saved my 3ds from sitting in my drawer, homebrew gives life to older systems, so there isn't an excuse for nintendo or sony to say "we can't support these systems anymore" because if people at home are doing it out of sheer passion, then these massive companies can definitely sort out an alternative approach to this issue.

    I think Microsoft is handling the situation very well, especially with there idea to give digital licenses to people who bought the physical disk. Also, they have the same store for all their consoles so games will always be able to download, receive updates, or beable to be purchased as long as the publisher let's it. I feel like nintendo and Sony can learn from Microsoft

    • @abdyfranco
      @abdyfranco ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't understand why Xbox is one of the lowest selling consoles, if Microsoft is handling things so well. I recently found my Sonic Unleashed disc for Xbox 360, a game I loved as a kid which I can play perfectly fine today on an Xbox One Series X, Without having to pay again for the digital version! Something that is unthinkable on Nintendo or PlayStation.

  • @IonicCeiling795
    @IonicCeiling795 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    I love having a physical collection, however so many games need patches nowadays that if there is no longer a store to download those patches, some games become unplayable. Imagine in the future someone bought a game like No Man's Sky on disc, because that is the only way to play (legally), more than half the game is missing. You might could patch it with some shady sites claiming to have patches. There needs to be a way to play and download games even after the consoles life cycle is over. If you can't buy it or get it for free legally (not used), and also not as a paid service like NSO, it should be legal to pirate it.

  • @AmosRambles

    These major gaming software distribution companies have all the power to scr*w over their player bases. I think the model should change though if we are moving to a digital only future:
    Have a Primary market for new release games, where anything that is currently getting maintained and updated on a regular basis is sold to those who are able to play the popular games.
    Once a game is deemed ‘outdated’ for whatever reason, move it to a secondary site, where the games are sold at a discount, and are only minimally maintained with patches to keep it from crashing on modern hardware.
    Once the company decides it isn’t financially viable to continue maintaining it, flag it as open source and remove the price completely. That way it is still accessible to anyone who still wants to play it, but with the understanding that they can maintain and update the game themselves or via a third party as required to with no penalty.
    This way they still retain distribution rights if required (or make available to other distributors) but they can build respect with their players. They can still have a subscription on the secondary site to cover the costs of storage, maintenance, etc, but the games themselves won’t have individual costs for something the company no longer cares about

    My take on piracy is a little different from you guys. I'm 100% in favor of it. I will pirate any game I feel like playing, and any time my favorites get modernly accessible versions (like the Mega Man /X/Zero Legacy collections) I'll give the publisher my money for it, but generally the pirated versions in emulators are going to have better features than the official releases and I'm going to play the better version.

    Maybe a lot of people don't know it, but big companies do preserve games within the source code and documented and stored.
    Its called preservation on a company level.
    But Nintendo and Sony does not preserve their game on a consumer licensing level due to console cycles.
    And this is where Microsoft has the upper hand, since they can automatically scale any game easily without doing anything to the source code of the games and with smart delivery, all older titles are playable right from the start on a new console or PC or a handheld or what have you on digital scale.
    I hope in the future we will see more enhanced DOS games upscaled with A.I and preserved on a consumer level.

Companies know that people want digital for convenience at the cost of no long term support and the money people that pay for digital copies just get thrown away since digital copies can't be kept forever and be taken away any time. Even Sony admits that people that bought movies can't keep them due to licensing issues and they even removed the movies that people bought from there video libraries. I just hope this does not happen with games in the future by going all digital. It's the same reason why I buy physical copies of movies, cds and game consoles with discs.

    EA too also. Like dead space series, command and conquer series, star wars series, medal of honor and the latest series they destroy is battlefield...Someone has to critic EA of how they killed so many games series over the years...

      Yup true but not as bad as 2042. Just released and EA is still in denial of a failed released. I do enjoy ubisoft titles game much more like siege the crew and the division tho i think there are more rooms for ubisoft to improve in developing newer title. EA on the other hand i guess i will NOT preorder to shitty release by them or until a positive reviews from gaming youtuber. Even microsoft develop more better games than EA. Shame on this greedy EA as a whole.

    This is a really, really, REALLY hot take, but I feel like a lot of people will agree with me on this, including the This Is channel crew: If there's no official means of paying companies like Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft or other developers of the games, to play them, I'm just gonna freely download the ROM online for it.
    Obviously I would go to places like Bookmans for most of them, but there are games out there that aren't ever at places like that, giving me no other options to play them EXCEPT for downloading the ROMs for them. Is it illegal? No, since there aren't any ways to pay in order to play the games. Yeah, there are people on eBay and stuff who sell official copies of games, only way more expensive, but IT ISN'T VERY LIKELY that those sellers will give that money they make from selling them to those companies

    I see the appeal and the advantage of going all digital but I would still prefer having physical cartridge or disc. I would like to have the option of selling my games later when I chose to do so in the future and that's hard to do with digital.
    I also think Microsoft is doing a great job in preserving their games by making almost everything backwards compatible with their current generation systems, and also selling them on their digital stores. Not everyone will use that feature but it sure is nice to have that when you want to play some older games. Nintendo and Sony should copy what Microsoft is doing especially Nintendo.

    Conversations about game preservation always make me upset, because many people bring up that if Nintendo doesn't wanna provide a legal way to play a game, then you don't have a right to play it. Maybe, but that doesn't mean games should die and be forgotten!
    The digital age scares me, and not just in terms of games

    The Microsoft is dealing with preservation and gamepass made me buy an Xbox. The day Nintendo made that Mario collection a limited time sale the only legal way of getting them, I gave away my 3ds and started hating Nintendo. They have to do something major to change my mind.

    Valve's digital games are... OK. The main place where it falls down is not being able to use multiple games at the same time. Not such a big deal when you're an individual but when you start getting kids at an age where they might want to play some games, well, with a disc you could just let them use the disc while you play a different game.

    • @elk3407
      @elk3407 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Family Sharing lets you share the library on multiple accounts, so you can have a single library and play Dragon Age while someone else is playing Skyrim. It even has a feature where in order to play a game the account who doesn't own it has to request to play, so you can stop them from playing any games you feel they shouldn't be playing yet

    • @spronkey
      @spronkey 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@elk3407 Yeah, that also requires that your kids have accounts - which is fine if you have older kids, but not so much for younger ones. Would be easier if you could just play up to 5 games simultaneously. It's also not out of the question to play two games simultaneously, especially if one of them is a more idle game.

    Definately going digital at the start of a games relese is the way to go. Since games obviouly get so many updates and DLC it makes owning the original physical release useless. Then do a complete physical release at the end of a games lifesycle. Like a GOTY or complete edition. To satisfy those who want one for there collection. It's just sad that most PC games these days never get physical releases.

    I literally trashed all my physical games a few months ago. Went all in digital 10 years ago and haven't had a disc drive since in any of my computers. On PC, Digital games are forever... And Nintendo/Sony games live on as ROMS to play in higher quality on my computer. 🤷‍♂️
    I do wish companies offered digital copies forever instead of needing to pirate them, though. It wouldn't cost up that much more to keep hosting a digital copy of a game that's not too popular to distribute on a single server and make it a Torrent.

    • @thatguy1153

      “Digital games live on forever”
      Until the company that made it goes out of business, or the game store does out of business, or the console gets old and it’s no longer profitable to keep the store open ( which has already happened with multiple game systems), furthermore what you are recommending is piracy, which I don’t mind, however 90% of people don’t want to go through the trouble of setting up an emulator

    what if companies could sell reproductions of media for items that are no longer sold by the original manufacturers. IE. N64 carts no longer sold by Nintendo? Then anyone else could sell that reproduction.
