tbh, I love the "added sugars" line on food labels! I feel like we've really come a long way in random sugar getting added to things (or I just go out of my way to find things with zero or low added sugar). Cool to see something John Oliver highlighted actually came to pass!
Edit: The fact "added sugars" is in grams makes... complete sense to me? The serving sizes are measured in grams, now you can do easy math to find out that 50% of Honeycombs cereal is sugar. It's WEIRD that people say "22 tsps" of sugar like that MEANS ANYTHING (it's ~92g, btw).

Grams actually make way more sense, because the amount of sugars you add varies depending on the type of sugar. Actually a fascinating study came out just last week about sentience among animals. There is now strong evidence that all vertibrae but also creatures like bees have a varying degree of sentience, self awareness and awareness of life. Many of us should really (re)consider our levels of empathy towards animals. The Jane Goodall interview was fantastic and great to see again.

Anyone who's tried to connect with an animal can very obviously see that they are sentient and even have personalities. Sure, my cats are pretty dumb and cannot understand language well, but they're each as valid an existence as mine.

    • @ichijofestival2576

Well, first I'd point out that there being "a study" doesn't necessarily mean anything. Even the "anti-vaxxer" movement was/is based on one. (And I do mean literally one-- and all signs point to that study being merely an angle to promote a drug the man was seeking to profit off of.)
But while we're ruminating, the [myth] I'd love to have [debunked] is the idea that lobsters "don't feel pain" (supposedly due to the way their nervous system is designed), because that has always sounded like bull dropped by people trying to rationalize what would otherwise be unspeakable cruelty (boiling them alive).

    Toronto Update:
In 2014, Doug Ford lost to John Tory boring but practical political Conservative lawyer and talk show host. He won re-election twice in a row (2018 and 2022) before resigning suddenly in February 2023 after the Toronto Star revealed he was in an extramarital intimate affair with a city staffer in the mayor's office during 2022. In June 2023, Olivia Chow was elected mayor after a by-election, she had lost to Tory in third place in the 2014 election.
Meanwhile, in 2018 Doug Ford became the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and became Premier of Ontario with the election of a majority PC government in 2018, re-elected with another majority government in 2022, and still in office. Though he has had a fair share of scandals I shall leave you to google.

    • @onedirectionlover317

@@TMercan31 That's a fair point, and I hate that mental math skills are often not that great amongst most people, but even for me (and I think of myself good at mental math), I'd argue that 1. it can make it a step harder to process the nutritional info if I have to try to visualize it in my head (to do that math for the whole container) rather than just have it written out in front of me, and 2. I do think that companies are often misleading, especially with single-serving packages, by listing a serving as some ridiculous fraction of the whole package. Like NO, I realistically cannot only eat 1/5 of this package once opened 🙄 or "NO, 1/3 of this is not going to fill me up, why call that a serving?".
I also think that, just like in Europe, India, and other places, it'd make sense to also list nutritional info per standardized amount (like 100 g), because it makes it SO much easier to compare options and decide which one is healthiest. Sure, even if I won't eat 100 g in one sitting (or eat way more), being able to compare 100 g of different yogurt brands, tubs of hummus, etc. is SUPER helpful in helping me select the healthiest option.
