Her voice, her pain, her songs of unrequited love... haunt me as my heart identifies with her in such a secret, vulnerable way. She is my favorite singer ever.
There is nothing that can be said about Billie (Lady Day) Holiday that can actually do justice to her Immense talent. Many years will pass and she will continue being the great jazz muse of all time. Marvelous!
There are just not enough words to fully give this woman all the praise she deserves. One of the only artists I was drawn to immediately on first listen. Thank you for sharing this.
As if Billie weren't enough you have the genius of "Sweets" and Ben Webster caressing the lyrical qualities with their soft, yet genius treatment as they bounce the soft-horn tonal backup between themselves, not unlike throwing a soft pillow back and forth. If you want to hear the heart, body and soul of American jazz...you just did!
I will always think of my Dad when I hear Billie Holiday since he was one to introduce me to her amazing music. The memories of listening to her albums which were anything but smooth, because of the inferior quality of the 33 albums; but I did not care, the music was beautiful made even better by listening with my daddy. She gave the world a gift that hopefully will continue to be loved & appreciated for many years & generations to come.
+Andres Mejia +Shane Wright Thanks guys. I don't know a ton about earlier jazz musicians and I wasn't aware that Webster played with Billie. The styles are quite distinct. I also would have found it out if I had taken the time to read the description.
This particular version is from the definitive Billie Holiday sessions on Verve with Ben Webster among others. The absolute best versions of everything! Oh but wait! Then there's Songs for Distingue Lovers. Wow!! Small group sessions: Billie at her best!
I believe that Amy would be the first and loudest to reject any comparison - and that would be, in itself, a confirmation of Amy's talent and musical wisom. While I have comment box open I am hearing that incredible tenor sax solo by Ben Webster. Oh, the music we had. Thank god for recordings.
Actually there is a New York City version of the song and a London. When Johnny Green was in London he left the lyric sheet in a cab so back at his hotel he wrote them out again and got them wrong. When Joni James recorded the song at Abbey Road in London she found some of the lyrics differed from what was heard in the United States and what was on the U.S. sheet music. For her recording she used the British version. Billlie recorded this song so many times, both in the studio an live, and every version is markedly different. I love them all. This one was recorded during her years with Norman Granz when he supplied for her the very tip-top jazz musicians and let her have her way vocally. She was very comfortable in the studio during this period and very pleased with being able to stretch songs out with no time limit. Granz really pumped the albums out, too, often repeating songs from album to album but always with new recordings. He gave Billie striking covers and she did very well indeed in the sales department. The Verve years have been judged inferior to the Columbia years and the Decca years (also I guess the Commodore years and the one Aladdin date) but it's not so. The Verve years stand tall on their own.
Barney Kessel on guitar, Ben Webster on sax, Red Mitchell on bass. I don't know the piano player. I love everything Billy recorded, but the Verve recordings are my favorites.
WOW Wonderful version of a truly great tune by the genius of Billie & how good are the backing musicians. What's with Larry T.Queen's comments? Can anyone understand what he's trying to say?
RIP Amy. Lady Day is amazing, and I'm looking forward to the release of your cover with Tony Bennett. Tough to top her version, but I'm sure you and Tony can do it.
I could not agree more. American Idol, X Factor, any of those shows -- someone like Billie Holiday (who in many ways was/is idolized) would never have won with her voice from the thirties or fifties. But, with Billie it was all about style, inflection, phrasing and being unique. Sinatra loved her. Early Elvis, Dylan, Janis Joplin -- these people too would never win any of today's "idol" contests. She was respected the world over. Want to learn to sing....yes just listen. Good post nickyges87.
Her voice, her pain, her songs of unrequited love... haunt me as my heart identifies with her in such a secret, vulnerable way. She is my favorite singer ever.
Her voice skips my ears and goes straight to my heart. She IS the story of jazz!
Holiday tells the story like no other singer can.
The X Factor would never have discovered anyone a Great as this Angel, if you want to learn to sing, just listen!!!!

+Andres Mejia +Shane Wright Thanks guys. I don't know a ton about earlier jazz musicians and I wasn't aware that Webster played with Billie. The styles are quite distinct. I also would have found it out if I had taken the time to read the description.
