Why are people doing this? Because there are other youtubers out there promoting the idea that you can "restore" a Coach bag by painting it with shoe polish (especially Saphir Shoe Cream). And the people watching those videos do not know any better. Thank you for doing these. You are right on the money with your assessments.
I’m so thankful I came across your channel. I’m a reseller and recently thrifted 15 vintage coach bags that were what appeared to be trashed. I was up for the challenge of reviving them. Before I found your page, every TH-cam video I’ve watch, the person restoring the bag either painted, dyed or used a colored wax to restore bags. I ended up ordering tons of dyes and paints and immediately cancelled my order when I saw your videos (thank god). I have washed each one, stuffed them to reshape and conditioned them and they came out looking absolutely amazing. Unfortunately most of the vintage coach restoring videos don’t show that usually they just need some conditioning so people think painting and dying is the best and only option. I now have 15 beautifully restored bags that are all original with no dyes or paint!
@@birdybloom2 just keep spreading your knowledge! I imagine anyone looking for info on restoring bags will stumble upon your channel like I did which will hopefully make them rethink using dyes/paints!

I believe all things happen for a reason. That poor bag found its way to your capable hands. Now it can breathe and live again. I’m glad you didn’t return it. It’s beautiful. Thanks for the video.
this video is so thorough, love that you showed great details down to how to even buff and apply several coats of conditioner and the difference it can make in those " flaws" we often think are hopeless. I conditioned and buffed a companion I got recently and it looks so much more wonderful now; I was able to blend in some marks and will continue to slowly shape and improve her. I am trying to remove storage wrinkles by massaging in little CPR using thin coats, and of course first step was the saddle soap cleanse. thanks a whole bunch for the time spent with us and warmest regards!!!
I’m working on my first rehab, a painted chunky pouch. I learned a lot from watching this video and now I have a bit more confidence to go back and try to remove more paint.
Bag looks fabulous after removing the paint! Shoe polish is removed with just rubbing alcohol & cotton pads. Paint and shoe polish can both be removed with acetone & cotton pads. It's cheaper to figure out if it's shoe polish or paint covering your bag and buy rubbing alcohol or acetone, compared to deglazer which is a combo of alcohol & acetone and much more costly.
Thanks so much for all the great information, I feel much more comfortable with the process. Will let you know how it goes with my bag. Thanks for all your help and shared knowledge!
I am so thankful that I came across your channel before further damaging my leather bags. I searched on TH-cam to study how to clean and condition leather bags two weeks ago. It poped up other popular channels and taught me how to use "dunk" method and apply Saphir conditioner. You save my bags!! Thank you so much. I immediately subscribed your channel and gave you thumbs up. Hope others can access your videos quickly and more bags to be loved.
Oh my goodness, thank you for your kind words! I am not anti-dunk but I am anti-dunk every bag. Each one deserves their own evaluation. I am more anti polish, colorant and paint. But even then it’s not a hard no, there are reasons and good ones someone might go these routes but be sure that they do not preserve the longevity of the Vintage Coach Leather. What I am not understanding is why I’m finding so many perfectly good bags under these layers:/
It's funny how the rehabbed side glows and the painted side is just dead looking. You asked why. I think it is new collectors/sellers. They see a few TH-camrs do it and they go for it. I almost did that when I first started buying and selling. Luckily I am a procrastinator and found you and Coach Counterfeits before I did anything!
Awesome tutorial, thank you. Can you also share tips on how to rehab vintage coach bags with mold stains? I'm thinking of dyeing but not sure how to do it the right way.

Since this was a longer video, I had to pause and adjust my volume several times. I wish I could recommend free or inexpensive software to help with audio levels.
I just got a X-Large duffle sac, this exact same color, and it looks like they used the exact same type of mild paint job on it, I’m now purchasing everything I need to do this (test first), but I’m praying my new used bag…. Will end up as beautiful as yours did!!!! Gets me excited but a little scared that there might be some real damage to this bag… I’m praying 🙏 this isn’t the case!!!!
I love this video. I"ve been avoiding dealing with that hasp bag. I determined it wasn't painted. But sadly, she definitely has some polish on her. So we're working on it slowly. I don't think it has a TON of polish but she's an oldie. And at one brief point in Coach history, I think there was a recommendation to polish them and their owners did just that :/
🤣 I recycled reusable /washable breast feeding pads from years of such. They work so great! The pads I use to remove paint or disposable cosmetic cotton pads.
I recently purchased a red Dinky from a seller on Poshmark. I had the bag authenticated prior to purchase. Upon receiving the bag, something felt off. Bag was just to bright red. I kept inspecting and there on the brass turnlock was the ‘paint’. I used a clean cloth and BAM shoe polish. Took me hours over 2 days to remove the polish thru rubbing. I contacted seller and Poshmark and was given the option to return the bag; I declined. I requested a discount and received 50% off what I paid.
No! The raw lining, suede and Nubuc do not get conditioned with the same products you use on the smooth leather grain. There are conditioner products out there for these types of leather sides but I don’t use them and typically are not necessary. The best thing to do for these nappy textures is to brush them out. Use a suede brush and even a horse hair brush. This loosens the nap lifting dirts and oils. If you need to wash the inside of the bag because it is very dirty, Lexol soap is a good option rinsing well with water.
Hi, I have a coach Lori bag in Dove grey, my nephew got ink on the outside bottom of my bag😢 and I tried to remove it with rubbing alcohol ( as some people told me to try) and now that area has a black/dark spot . How can I fix this? I love this bag and try very hard to take good care of it and all my bags. I really hope this is fixable!!!
I did the acetone test a lot too, but I end up realizing that usually there is a transparent finish that comes off, no color, and I guess that’s the little finish like resolene? Or maybe some partina is like a transparent coating on the bag? I’m still trying to figure out
I have a question, is it paint or is it a colored creams they put on leather to cover scuffs, scratches or lines? I haven't seen any paint that goes on leather unless I don't know what I'm looking for. I do have a Coach Willis bag that it feels great looks Bad l but the tone is kind of flat compared to my other coach bags how would I test for that?
This was paint which won’t ‘come off’ onto a rag while conditioning. Coloring creams, polishes do when you apply conditioner. I test with acetone in an inconspicuous spot with a qtip. Light stroke and I have a video doing this and explaining it.

Hi friend! This is a awesome, awesome video! People just don't know just how bad it is to smother a vintage Coach bag with junk. This is the same steps I used to take even shoe polish, coconut oil etc off. I always rinse the bag afterwards even though the Acetone evaporated I just like to rinse but that's just me, and at times dunk depending on how dirty but I never soak the bag and never stuff it while wet. Great video and the bag looks great also can actually breathe now LOL! Are you going to be selling the bag? Would consider purchasing it if so! Have a wonderful day! 🌹
I will sell her eventually but I want to do a couple of more videos on her which is why I got her, lol. She is my first mid size duffle. I can’t believe how amazing she feels now. It’s crazy what these bags can take…..thank you for your comments and I will reach out when I do decide to sell her.
And I would have ‘washed’ her if I had found something to wash off but I literally found nothing at all. I think she sadly just needed proper conditioning, someone didn’t take the steps so they painted her. It can be scary though….not knowing what was covered up but she isn’t the first that I found no issues. Crazy, painting seems like so much more effort than conditioning 🤣
@@birdybloom2 I completely agree! I will never understand the WHY. I have treated mold on bags before with vinegar and that's a whole process as well, but to just paint and cover it up blows my mind. It’s hard to say without more information. Dry leather can feel stiff too. Do you see any demarcations in the leather at points that would be difficult to ‘paint or polish’? I have a video with tips on identifying a ‘painted’ bag which may be helpful. But, leather that needs attention can feel stiff too. It doesn’t mean that the bag has something applied to it. Which is why I didn’t realize initially that this bag had been painted. I suspected such once my typical leather care wasn’t doing anything for the leather.
Not all leather is created equally. It’s not good for Glove tanned leather particularly. But, it suffocates all leather. People who do apply shoe polish to their shoes ‘properly’ and want their shoes to last as long as possible will tell you that you need to periodically remove the shoe polish that has built up, recondition and start again. Leather shoes will crack under layers of shoe polish and improper care. But leather shoes are definitely a different ball game. Also, not often are you hoping to get 30 plus years out of them…..so, it’s a common practice that people utilize. Good? Not really. But, does it matter in the end game of a leather shoe?
