Bruce Dickinson - Iron Maiden - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
When Iron Maiden released their single “Run To The Hills” it was the debut of Bruce Dickinson as the band’s new vocalist.
Can you imagine your first single becoming one of the most iconic songs in rock history! What other artists do you know of who also had such iconic debuts?
As I break down the isolated vocals stems in this video, I’m also going to give a tutorial as we work through how to sing the chorus together.
After discussing the recording process I’m also going to show you how by adding some effect, I can take Bruce’s vocal track and give it an even bigger sound.

Bruce is such an amazing talent. I loved how you described him as melodramatic because that's a perfect way to describe singers like Bruce, Halford, Freddy and Anne Wilson. Not just singing a song, but immersing yourself in it and telling the story using your voice to build drama, emotion and suspense the same way the instruments do.
Well said!
Awesome! Bruce is so good, and still awesome in concert. He will always be one of my favourite singers.
Funny my wife dosnt have to warm up to scream at me😃
Haha!
lol... You must keep her warmed up often then hehe.
@@scottm8845 hahaha
Hahahaha
🤣
I learned today that after all these years, I still can't sing this. Dickinson wasn't playing around.
👍💜😀
Bruce's singing has a quality of the power of masculine energy
Indeed!
His predecessor more .
Love Dickinson in Samson
But not much in maiden .
He softened in clean operatic vocals too much .
Nobody sounds like Bruce, very recognizable voice on any song. He's the reason you connect to the words of Maiden.
@@j_freed Actually there's a man named Raphael Mendez who sounds very similar to Dickinson.
I can’t believe a voice with that upper range which is mixed with so much head voice still has so much steely power. I’ve seen him live a few times in the last 20 years, and he still kills.
Bruce wrote in his autobiography that for Harris, first of all, everything is in the rhythmic space, that the vocals are non-singing. Even so, he manages to tell a cool story.
I love his tone. In his youth, he seems to be a lyric-dramatic tenor, but closer to 40 he was reclassified into a dramatic one. The timbre has become deeper and darker with a metallic tint. Great.
Thanks for weighing in!
I'm just here for the trippy shirts.
Haha! Hope I didn't disappoint!
@@kentamplin it's all good 👍 t-shirts added bonus😁
Dude ken has some amazingly trippy shirts...love em
@@Rafael-xu9cn imagine how things would be if Ken met Steve Vai 25 years ago.
I wrote my comment before I saw your comment! Yes his shirts are very..........
The galloping nature of Maiden tunes makes me wonder how he even keeps up with the lyrics. Bruce has extracted every ounce out of life. Bravo. Great bunch of guys.
John Gatti 👍
i was litterally waiting for you to make an analysis of his voice... wow
Hope you enjoyed it!
This is awesome teaching! Along with Dio, Bruce Dickinson was also a big influence on me wanting to sing metal. I loved the sheer, raw energy Bruce had in his voice. Love the way you cover the reverb/doubling/vocal effects on the recording.
Glad it was helpful, MetalMistress888!
I do not sing, stopped playing my guitar when life happened, but I absolutely love this channel and this man. I love watching these breakdowns, even on songs and groups that I have never listened to, nor would I. Great channel... ❤❤
Such a great coach and replies all the comments...........
Humbleness at it's finest,people
That's kind of you, Fahad!
Wow! Another great singer with great vocal range. His isolated vocals format is really helpful for vocalists/singers. Thanks a lot sir Ken.
My pleasure, Joshua!
Hearing these isolated vocals is so cool! Once again, Ken boosted the strength of who wants to learn how to sing by showing how it is possible without any fear! Also, who can keep me focused for 25:13 on a different topic that is not watching a naked woman, is a Guru!
Rock on, Roberto!
always love a bit of brucey baby, especially bruceys high notes and insane vibrato. Plus Bruce got better with age, even after throat cancer
Run to the Hills. Thanks for doing this one, Ken!
Run for your life!
That was a most excellent analysis and demonstration of the behind-the-scenes studio workings with this icon of rock vocals! I'm not worried that my opinion of him will be degraded - on the contrary! I think much more of him, and instead of merely humanizing him and his vocals (which is wonderful), it (you) really brought attention to how he put the power of his entire being into his singing and vocals. Also...it really highlights the absolutely clever and even brilliant workings of the producers and engineers - even in the "old days"! Thanks, Ken...keep 'em coming! :-)
Thanks for the visit!
8:23 talking about siren technic, Bruce Dickinson's nickname in the band is precisely The air raid siren ^^ Great video !
Rock on!
Thanks for taking the time to break this down with the siren and sliders. A great tool for baritones who would like to play in Bruce/Dio land!
You're welcome, Jason!
Thanks Ken...I struggle with my upper octave so I go deep when singing hymns and songs at church....I used to play the sax in a band in the 80s and we'd do instrumentals and easy vocals first set then 2nd set my airways had opened up because of how I breathe to play the sax ....all I do now is follow your teachings and you are good at it...thankyou from down under
Thanks for the visit. Rock on! 👍😀
I always wonder if Bruce ever thought about any of this or if it just was there and then obviously got developed just through gigs. He had serious problems after the first two tours and they seemed to last until he had an unusual vocal rennaisance just before he left the band. His solo albums are astonishing and he's been singing better the last 20 years than he did on the Powerslave tour. Some have it and the rest of us try to get it I guess.
😊👍
he was better in Samson. Beast on the Road wore out his voice and he never got those high screams back.
Incredible knowledge. I now understand one could really learn that (and I thought for more than 30 years, one has to be born with a voice that makes that kind of singing possible).
Nope. You can develop it!
Reminds me of being a young boy. I played this album to death. Very Weird hearing his vocals without the band tbh !!! What an awesome series Ken. I love hearing your analysis as very few people know so much about vocals and technique. These should be on a Netflix series. !!
Glad you enjoyed it, theonlyredspecial!
This was a delight!
Bruce is my all time favorite singer and it was great to hear your insight and how you picked apart the vocals of the song!
So glad you enjoyed it, Infinite Dreams!
Hey Ken, the proof really is in the singing. Your an amazing singer, coach and recording master from what I have heard. The other channels that analyze singers is just that. All they do is talk. The difference is Ken backs up everything he says and delivers.
Thank you, willman100!Merry Christmas! 🎄🌟🎁
Great video, Ken. The work you do with videos like this and your students is just outstanding. Thank you!
Tate and Bruce were my two favorite. I remember when Powerslave was released just incredible stuff.
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Wow Ken, that was extremely fascinating and informative. Thank you so much for taking the time to do this. Very interesting.
God bless you brother!
I'm glad you enjoyed it, Joshua!
@@kentamplin Yes indeed sir. Have a blessed day.
One if the greatest metal vocals ever! Bruce makes so many good choices of HOW to you his voice! Thanks Ken!
Rock on!
Right, I share your enthusiasm
And your trippy shirt ..😎
😛
Iron Maiden is one of my absolute favorite bands! Thank you for your insight! I have loved this series!
Awesome!
When I record myself I always get frustrated by not being perfectly on pitch. But nobody even mentions those mistakes (ok, some one take songs were bad for sure). Listening to Bruce also makes me realize that what makes people like you isn't perfect pitch, but the way you present it to the audience.
Enjoyed your video and will watch it again later.
Kristóf Kovács 👍
When it comes down to it, I value the character in a voice much more so than how close it might be to pitch perfection.
I've been doing KTVA starter workouts for 6 weeks and notice a difference. 4-5 times a week for 25-40 min. It's been really encouraging especially with the forums. I really want to be able to do some covers within the next year but the course has been brilliant so far!
Awesome! Great to hear that!
Thank you, Ken! Exactly a week ago I asked myself, how Bruce Dickinson would sound like in isolated vocals and put that in the comments of your Freddie video. Now we do have the answer. I loved this video!
The series as a whole is so much fun! Thank you for sharing this with us.
My pleasure!
amazing video
Bruce is an amazing vocalist, by far my favorite singer on rock/metal
One of mine too, Leandro!
Big Bruce, best sound . the better channel 👍👍
Great stuff! Maiden is my all time favorite and Bruce is a one off!
Rock on!
This video is sooo interesting and informative! Amazing job Ken! Thank you 🌷
Bruce oh Bruce we love him with effects or not. He is great!
He is!
You’re an amazing human.
So are you, N G!
Thanks Ken. I love the way you smile as Bruce is singing. Maiden defined my musical tastes for many years. Since Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, they've been my #1 metal band. Excellent video. I love your insights and advice.
Thanks for the visit! 👍💜😀
Just need to compliment you for this video series, that's a really cool idea 🤘
Glad you like them!
O my. That shirt is super cool. Heck yeah. Bruce sings it, you believe it. He is a Monster.
Glad you like it! Rock on!
How very interesting, love it. Bruce is such a master, loved hearing his isolated vocals. Great video, thanks for doing it!
Iron Maiden for life 🙌🙌🙌
Glad you enjoyed it, Zina!
Great Vid Ken. What I love about watching your vids is seeing the total authentic love on your face of various voices as an instrument. You're awesome man. ;)
So nice of you! 👍💜😀
Amazing vocals and this breakdown was super interesting.
Glad you think so, Erik!
What a legend 🤘🏼
Totally! Thanks for the visit!
Those vocals are amazing!
From South Africa, these vids are very helpful.
Happy to hear that! Glad you're here!
For discovering at the top scream
Maybe in that combinaison .
But for thoses who don't know , When Paul was in the band .
Bruce was in a band called Samson .
He did 2 records with them before joining maiden
So its not Like the number of the beast was his first experience .
Bruce sang a lot more agressive in Samson than in maiden
Thanks for sharing that info, Guillaume!
Holy cow! Great video. I really appreciated the siren approach. Thanks so much Ken, you are a legend. Cheers Michael
Glad you enjoyed it!
First ‘isolated vocals’ I’ve watched, love it! Look forward to watching these, 👌
More to come, Farid!
Man, killer vocal cover singing the chorus. I'll work on the sirens exercises. Killer shirt too!
Thanks for the listen, Johnny!
This. Was. Absolutely. Amazing!!!!!!!
Glad you enjoyed it, SonnyGTA!
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy Ken, Bruce Dickinson and Michael Kiske are my two favorite singers in the world. This video was just jaw-dropping!
Never listened much to Bruce Dickinson or iron maiden come to think of it I've never listened to their music but he is awesome for what he does great vocals a lot of people loved him he is great Ken but his technique is awesome has a great range great vocals Ken what he does works for him Ken even though I don't listen to him he has that raspy vocals growling sound which I is awesome in rock singing so he is great ken👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Up the irons, Cade!
Will do Ken sure will
I love the fact how you seem not to give a shit about how funny you are with those exercises:D
😎
Hi there Sir Ken! You definitely know your stuff man!! I absolutely love Bruce Dickinson's voice! Thank you for covering it & I noticed that you have indeed done several videos on him! Thanks for that & I've just subscribed to your awesome channel! I'm very interested in your vocal course. I'll be completely honest with you man that I am a vocalist (& bass guitarist) but backslidden if you will lol! I love your concept & I look forward to advancing towards your every critique! Rock on friend!
Love Bruce. Maiden are standard-bearers in so many ways.
Rock on!
Excelente idea to do those videos Ken.
.
Glad you like them!
awesome stuff man! really enjoyed this one 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
I really enjoy your vids but just love to hear these isolated vocals vids. I literally want to hear all artists like this 😁😊👌.
Working on it!
Some of Bruces best work is on the Chemical Wedding- solo record. Gates of Urizen for example. If you havent ever listened to it, I highly recommend it.
Gerat suggestion, sarty23!
Ken how does Bruce still manage to sing great to this day?????
Bruce is awesome, love his attitude and tone
👍💜😀
I love maiden isolated tracks. Worth listening to wasted years Bruce and Adrian chorus
👍💜😀
I really love this serie of isolated vocal tracks!! Knowing it 30 years ago would have made a huge difference!! Thank you very much for this knowledge!!
You're very welcome!
Ouch!! I'm now sitting here with my bass... what I didn't do in many years!!!!! Does it just make me love playing music again!?!?!?!?
Bruce Dickinson has been my vocal inspiration for nearly forty years and yet I just learned something new. So cool! Thanks! Got my subscription today. By the way, I read somewhere that the scream (the one that is cut in) was literally him screaming in frustration after being asked to redo it over and over again dozens of times. 😃
Thanks for the visit! Happy New Year! 🎉🥂
I enjoyed this big time!!! ~ Thank you Ken!
My pleasure!!
Great Job, Thank you Ken.
My pleasure, Vince!
I was trained classically and I love listening to the training that is involved in rock. It makes the classic gal want to try some rock 🤘
Thanks for the visit. Rock on! 👍😀
I know pretty much everything recorded gets compressed, but never realized how hard they compressed his vocals! The telltale breathing/pumping when he starts each line of the chorus give it away. Of course you don’t notice it with all of the music, but when you isolate it, it’s clear. If I was a betting man, I’d put my wager on it being an old tube driven LA/2A compressor (been over 20 years since I actually used one, but they do have their own signature)
Rock on!
Awesome. Holy cow I am hitting it. Ken is best.
Thanks for listening, John!
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos, thank you and keep them coming!!
More to come!
Awesome! Any chance you can do an isolated analysis of Disturbed : Down with the Sickness? Thanks Ken and have a great day!
I used to use an AMS back in the days for my drums as I started out as a drummer... ahhhh the memories. Just to add that reverb into tracks. Recording back then was so much work, but a lot better then the computer 'garbage' of today, we worked for our sound. We had fun, and still do, we're true to it, we don't care for perfection, we love our little errors, that would be called out today, it makes us... us
Indeed!
Best one yet.
Thanks for the visit! Rock on!
Bruce is great but Ken makes it easy!
Thanks, renovatio renovatio!
@ 18:17 that vocal sounds like a jet engine taking off..... so awesome. ty Ken for sharing

Dude this thing about bringing your head voice down into the chest omg that's awesome thanks dude

"Where the proof is in the singing!" I could not agree more. As usual one more nice video you deliver to us. Thanks! God bless ya.
Thanks for listening!
Great video on Bruce Dickinson's vocals!!
Thanks, Steve!
Bruce Dickinson is also a warbird pilot who flew a DC-3 between Edmonton and Calgary on a Canadian tour.
Awesome, Sanni!
Excellent again Ken :)
Glad you enjoyed it!
o so nice the isolated vocal track. the song with the instruments always makes me trip with my vocals cause i think i need way more power while trying the vocals.
but hearing it so clear makes it a lot easier. can't wait till im able to do a vocal cover of this song somewhere in the future.
😀💜
Love it reminds my of Private Part. Howard Stern. WNBC.

As always extremely great video. Being a gear nerd I love the tips about production and recording techniques. Keep on rocking my friend. Merry Christmas to you and yours Ken!
