"Why Don't You Do Right?" is my favorite of hers- you may know it as Jessica Rabbit's song. :) Also check out Rosemary Clooney and Connie Francis. And Nora Jones, for a modern sultry, smooth, jazzy singer. I mentioned to try out her cover of Hank William's "Cold Cold Heart" on that video.
Connie Francis! Thanks for the reminder! "Vacation", " Lipstick On Your Collar", Who's Sorry Now", "Where the Boys Are"... great memories of listening to her records at my Grandma's house... Rosemary Clooney, wasn't she the aunt of George Clooney? I don't know her songs but I do remember seeing her on The Mike Douglas Show or Dick Cavett or one of those shows... and paper plate commercials. Sorry for rambling but Thanks S.W.
First I ever heard; realising it was by the same singer when I saw a clip of Peggy Lee singing Fever, was 'Is That All There Is?' ~ somehow always missed the singer's name when I heard that song :-) Not sure how old I was exactly, but I definitely remember hearing Fever for the first time when I was heavily into everything from ABBA to Siouxsie and the Banshees at the same time. Got into Julie London; Bessie Smith; Edith Piaf; Ella Fitzgerald and, of course, Peggy Lee all at the same time. kerk
This is definitely one of the coolest songs ever. That slinky bass line, minimal instrumentation, and Peggy Lee's dynamic voice together establish atmosphere and demands you follow her into the world she creates.
My understanding is that the arrangement was hers, as well as the bridge, the verses of Romeo and Julier and John Smith and Pocahontas. The rest of the song is from Little Willy John. Peggy Lee was a great singer, a great musician, arranger, and songwriter.
@@myrrhfishify7743 I have also heard that her producers were afraid that the way she wanted to make the record would hurt the sales. Fortunately she won in the end, because this song still remains iconic, definitely worth spending time listening to it. I love that her vision prevailed over conventional wisdom.

She wasn't the original artist of this song fever it was done by a guy by the name of Lil Willie John which is the first cousins to Al Green he made a big head out of it back in the fifties I know I'm 85 years old
As you both commented Fever was about Peggy Lee’s voice, very little instrumentation. If you want to heat her sing with a band, listen to Why Don’t You Do Right with Benny Goodman and his orchestra. This is a knockout jazz number. The ladies that sang with the Big Bands like Benny Goodman’s were called canaries. Don’t you love it?
Back in the days when my Dad was a jazz musician (in the Swing Era), the female singer in the band was often also referred to in slang as, "the Chirp."
Peggy Lee was nominated for 13 Grammy Awards. In 1969, her hit "Is That All There Is?" won her the Grammy for Best Contemporary Vocal Performance. In 1995, she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Billie Holiday has one of those CLASSIC voices!!! God Bless the Child Good Morning Heartache Strange Fruit This is a CAN'T MISS Artist!! One of a kind and an important part of music HISTORY!!
Be prepared. Strange Fruit can be shocking because it was about lynchings. Many radio stations refused to play it. She was very brave. God Bless The Child is a great song.
Billie holiday has been my favourite singer of any genre since I first heard her when I was 18 in 1968. I was so disappointed to discover she had already gone. My favourite thing by her is the live (long) version of Fine and Mellow with all the great instrumental solos between verses and the cracked, croaking speaking voice in her intro that blossomed into the beauty when she sang. But anything by her would do for me.
My father worked his way through college as a professional jazz musician. Peggy Lee was the singer in the band before she hit the "big time." Her real name was Norma Egstrom. My Dad said that she was a very nice lady--and, obviously, a great singer. When I was young, and Peggy Lee would be on television, my Dad would always say, "There's Norma." She was from a tiny farm town in North Dakota.
I’m sorry that you didn’t see her perform this song. When you talk about minimalism in the music, she did that in her performance, as well. As a kid I was so struck by how she sang, but barely moved. But, she was impossible to take your eyes off.
I remember that exact thing, Barb, but had kinda forgotten till you noted that ! She KNEW she had a sultry presence that needed little else. Even as a little kid, when I saw her on The Andy Williams Show, I remember she seemed very laid back. Her biography is FASCINATING.A poor and friendly North Dakota child, she started out on local radio and wound up a big star.
Whooo, this takes me way back, love some Ms Peggy Lee (def one of the female crooners, with others like Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney and Doris Day)...Peggy also played Pekingese Peg in Disney's Lady and the Tramp...Thank you guys, loved it...Peace

The old girl singers were fantastic. Peggy Lee, Julie London, Kay Starr, and not to forget the little sparrow Edith Piaf. Fever is good, but I prefer "Why don't you do right" for the little vocal inflections Peggy puts in it. I finally figured out why big bands were so big, they did not have amplifiers. If you wanted to fill a music hall full of dancers you needed a really big band. You might want to listen to Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, or Glenn Miller from that era. You won't be sorry.
Back to the 50’s again. Peggy Lee was always fantastic. Peggy Lee was a contemporary of Frank, and Dean. This was earlier Peggy Lee. You should check out her 20 years later in “one more ride on the merry go round”. It is outstanding!

Peggy Lee was also one of the singers in “Lady and the Tramp”. She sings “We Are Siamese If You Please”. You would enjoy watching it with your children, if you haven’t already seen it.
"Peggy Lee was the female Frank Sinatra. She was the epitome of popular jazz singing and a wonderful song writer as well " Tony Bennett " Peg is just about the best friend a song ever had " Frank Sinatra
Peggy Lee was the closest thing to a female Frank Sinatra. Both in her style, attitude, and choice of songs. Fever is a great classic. Her style matured over the years as did Frank’s. They both started out as big band singers in the era where big bands dominated and the band leaders were the biggest stars. Later the big bands faded and small bands such as quartets and trios were in. Eg Nat King Cole Trio. The singers became the biggest stars. At this point, Peggy was such an amazing, mature, developed singer, and big star that she only needed a duet, bass and drum. (Upright bass, not a bass guitar.)
That deep bass string sound is a cello…being strummed. And Peggy Lees voice is BUTTER. And this era and Motown did this, LIVE with no electronic clowning. That’s. HER. VOICE.
Incredible! Next? "First lady of Song". Elle Fitzgerald! "Summertime" She also paired with Louie Armstrong on the same song. Both outstanding Female Crooner examples.
Ella Fitzgerald is just flat out amazing. "It's De-lovely" is one of my favorites. Well, really all of the Cole Porter songs she sings are favorites, lol.
Wow. You're really rolling out the classics. Peggy Lee was sensational. My mother listened to her. You might like Rosemary Clooney, too. George Clooney's aunt.
That's darling. I did much the same with . . . only the song was Moon River, and just a favorite bedtime song, only I used to choke up a little at the end. I always knew I could never keep them little forever. This song is a favorite of mine. So glad you like it too.
Peggy precedes me! She has a smooth jazz sound that hit its heights in the 50s. She’s one of a kind. My favorite of hers is, “Is That All There Is?”. She was contemporary with Frank, Dean, Tony and Perry!
Louis Prima and KeelySmith, “That Old Black Magic”. 50’s Bop. Keely was born in Norfolk, Virginia and claimed Irish and Cherokee ancestry. Her first solo hit in 1957 was “I Wish You Love”.
Definitely her with all the crooners that I listened to during the Christmas 🎄 holidays. They always set the tone sing which is always timeless. It never gets old.
Thank you for discovering Peggy Lee on your musical journey. her song "Black Coffee" is a perfect example of a Torch Song . Much Love & Respect. 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤👌✌✌

I remember seeing Peggy Lee on TV as a child singing this song. There were some great women singer in this era, such as Connie Francis, Brenda Lee (often called Little Miss Dynamite), Doris Day, Patti Page and Rosemary Clooney (George Clooney's aunt)
Simple, drum, base fidel and Peggy's voice. I loved listening to her in the 50s when I was in grammer school. Doris Day is another singer from that day.
I was 10 yeas old when this song came out. We had a lot of musical TV shows back then. So glad you are not afraid to go back to the 40's 50's and 60's. Wow wonderful to hear the music of my youth
Sunday mornings were my fathers way of waking up myself and my 2 brother's to help do the lawns. It was always Peggy Lee Fever followed by Booker T and the MGs Green Onions (which you have to react to) followed by anything Pink Floyd. This was early 70s and where I got my eclectic music background. We played all 3 at his funeral and I appreciate the education he gave us. RIP Dad 👍
For Female Friday you should do her song “I’m A Woman” ❤ she was such an incredible talent. Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, Blossom Dearie, Etta James… these women are amazing crooners from that time. These woman are powerful and to this day are the pillars of jazz and R&B. It’s definitely Jay’s sipping whiskey jazz, but my goodness each of these amazing women are an experience to behold.
I think you'd enjoy hearing Andy Williams. His voice is so smooth. His song, The Days of Wine and Roses, which was from a movie of the same name is great. I love hearing him . Actually, he went to the same high school in Cincinnati, Ohio as my husband (Western Hills), and that may have contributed to why he's one of my husband's favorite singers. Andy Williams had a show, and he introduced the Osmonds to the public. (I think Donnie was around 6 years old.)

I remember my mom having Peggy Lee albums. When she played them I would look at the covers. I remember the picture in my mind. Good memories.
@@dianegoldeneye7207 lol yes I was a kid in the 70’s but I loved and appreciated all genres of music thanks to Mike Douglas , Dinah Shore, Dick Cavette and the others shows, we were blessed to hear it all and now the young kids get to enjoy it also
@@shirleycollins6241 so true. It touches my heart when they recognize and enjoy this great music.
Sorry for rambling but
Thanks
S.W.
The more modern Nora Jones is fantastic. But the others can’t be beat. I agree they should try all of those ! Great suggestions 👍🏻💯
Oh yeah they’ve got to check out Rosemary Clooney too!!!
Got into Julie London; Bessie Smith; Edith Piaf; Ella Fitzgerald and, of course, Peggy Lee all at the same time. kerk
Oooooo Jessica Rabbit! 😍😍😂
You need to react to "Cry Me A River" by Julie London. She was a beautiful torch singer in the 50s and 60s, and an actress, too. Her voice is amazing.
Yes!!
Cry me a river by Shirley Bassey - torch powerhouse singer
Definitely! I like when she sings Wives and Lovers
@@phillipecook3227 Married to Jack Webb and later on Bobby Troup of Emergency! fame.
Oh hell yes!!!!

& I love Fats Domino's version of that song, too.
Big Bands with a crooner or a torch singer ... as Bing and Satchmo told us ... That's Jazz!
@@annpulbrook9033 also Elvis did a great job of fever.
@@jeffreyetherton3185 It’s such a great song, & everything Elvis did was incredible. I’ll have to listen, 🎧
Loving these oldies! The 50’s! Some of the females were called “torch singers” because of the songs.
The bass and drums absolutely compliment her voice. I call that voice “sultry”. Oozing cool...
SMASHES IT PEGGY ALWAYS
My Grandfather's favorite torch singer. She's a classic & so is FEVER.

One of my father’s absolute favorite towards zingers also! I can’t believe both my dad and Peggy Lee are over 100 years old now
That’s it - the ladies are torch singers, and the men are crooners. That’s what they called these type of singers in that era.
Billie Holiday has one of those CLASSIC voices!!!
God Bless the Child
Good Morning Heartache
Strange Fruit
This is a CAN'T MISS Artist!! One of a kind and an important part of music HISTORY!!
Exactly what I was going to recommend.
Throw in some Sarah Vaughan and you'll be so mellow...
Thank you for sharing
Ann...
Sooo need to see her LIVE!!!
One of the sultriest voices ever!

Oh my gosh, Yes! Rosemary Clooney! LOVE her! What a voice!
Julie London!!! Love her and Bobby Troup
Same for orchestras for operas.
What she is is a siren! One of the best songs ever-go Peggy , she owns this tune.. jazz torch, big band, pop
One of the best. Incomparable.

She wrote and sang "We Are Siamese..." for the Disney movie.
She sang "He's a tramp" also.
@@dazyh4637 And she voiced Si, Am, Peg, and Darling. She sang Darling's lullaby too.
Wow, I didn't know that. So cool!!!
@@joannevincent2035 in fact she wrote all the songs for the movie as well as playing the role of Peg! A truly talented lady
"Peggy Lee was the female Frank Sinatra. She was the epitome of popular jazz singing and a wonderful song writer as well " Tony Bennett
" Peg is just about the best friend a song ever had " Frank Sinatra
Vocal, Bass, Drums. Excellence.
She one of the first artist to use multiple tracks on recording. This allowed her to sing harmony with herself
That deep bass string sound is a cello…being strummed. And Peggy Lees voice is BUTTER. And this era and Motown did this, LIVE with no electronic clowning. That’s. HER. VOICE.
It's a string bass! Much bigger than a cello, and a fixture in dance bands before the advent of electric instruments.
Classic jazz. Love it.
Y’all should check out the Andrews Sisters. “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”
I just love Peggy Lee. My mom introduced me too her when I was a teenager. Thank you mom for my musical education.
Drums, upright acoustic bass and the awesome Peggy Lee 🎶
Incredible! Next? "First lady of Song". Elle Fitzgerald! "Summertime" She also paired with Louie Armstrong on the same song. Both outstanding Female Crooner examples.
I’ve been requesting her and Etta James. No luck yet, but I know they’d love it
Love Ella and Louie!! Two of the best 💕🎺
Ella Fitzgerald is just flat out amazing. "It's De-lovely" is one of my favorites. Well, really all of the Cole Porter songs she sings are favorites, lol.
Nobody Knows Agree!!! The one and only Ella Fitzgerald is the Queen of Song!!! Nobody does it like Ella 💕
One of the greatest voices ever in popular music history!
Amber you would love love Etta James "At Last " one of my all time favorite female singers
Yes, 'Is That All There Is' - a musical theater experience compressed into a single song.
perfect description!
She was a spectacular torch singer, She sang with the big bands of the late 1930's and stayed relevant into the 1960's.
Wow. You're really rolling out the classics. Peggy Lee was sensational. My mother listened to her. You might like Rosemary Clooney, too. George Clooney's aunt.
I would sing this to my kids when they were little and had a fever. Lol
That's darling. I did much the same with . . . only the song was Moon River, and just a favorite bedtime song, only I used to choke up a little at the end. I always knew I could never keep them little forever.
This song is a favorite of mine. So glad you like it too.
True story: My dad danced with Peggy Lee at his senior prom. She was her cousin’s date.
Now that is awesome. :)
Cool! Any pics?
Peggy Lee has a unique way of interpreting a song. "Is That All There Is" is my favorite of hers no one else has ever done that song better.
That's a really great song
Made me so sad when I was a child.
Peggy Lee was a treasure. Such an attitude.
Peggy precedes me! She has a smooth jazz sound that hit its heights in the 50s. She’s one of a kind. My favorite of hers is, “Is That All There Is?”. She was contemporary with Frank, Dean, Tony and Perry!
Is That All There Is is another classic from Peggy Lee. Such a sultry voice.
Amber, since J likes a voice with a little grit or gravel in next Friday try Kim Carnes "Betty Davis Eyes"
If you want another 'grit' voice Amber could also try some Bonnie Tyler, total eclipse of the heart
Yes! Kim Carnes also sang in We Are the World, next to Huey Lewis and Cyndi Lauper. "Bette Davis Eyes" is iconic!
Louis Prima and KeelySmith, “That Old Black Magic”. 50’s Bop. Keely was born in Norfolk, Virginia and claimed Irish and Cherokee ancestry. Her first solo hit in 1957 was “I Wish You Love”.
Good choice.
Louis Prima is a trip! "I'm Just a Gigolo" and "Marie" are great, too.
I saw Keely Smith in LV with Sam Butera (Louie Prima’s sax player).
Love , love love, this was recorded in 1958. She passed away at 81 in 2002. R.I.P
FEVER is one of my all time favorites. My grandpa use to play this song on his high fidelity phonograph player.

This is such a classic! Fire! Great pick! Great reaction! You should pull up Elvis live version of this song.
Yes! Elvis does a great version of this song ❤️🔥
Yes from Aloha From Hawaii.
Love her...my favourite song of hers is "Is that all there is?"...fabulous...
Definitely her with all the crooners that I listened to during the Christmas 🎄 holidays. They always set the tone sing which is always timeless. It never gets old.
I love hearing this song. A reasonably modern singer of this genre is Sade and I think you will enjoy her a lot.
Thank you for discovering Peggy Lee on your musical journey. her song "Black Coffee" is a perfect example of a Torch Song . Much Love & Respect. 👍👍👍👍❤❤❤❤👌✌✌
Another great example of a torch song from that era is “Cry Me a River” by Julie London.
Classic song. It’s 🔥🔥🔥🔥. Sultry 😉 nice request whoever did thanks. I love that you guys listen to and appreciate this great music. I listened to this when I was a child. My mother loved Peggy Lee and the BIG Bands. You bring back such good memories. Please do more of these suggestions on here. This was true music as you can tell. So many beautiful crooners and sultry women singers y’all would enjoy. Love you guys. ❤️
As others have mentioned, she did three songs in Lady and the Tramp. She voiced Darling (Lady's owner) Peg, and the Siamese cats. She also wrote "He's a Tramp".
No one sings like Peggy Lee. It is hard to impersonate, her. She has a quality about herself. And she is a Sensational singer.
She's a torch singer! One of the best.
This really sets her voice center stage She was a great singer.
I was 10 yeas old when this song came out. We had a lot of musical TV shows back then. So glad you are not afraid to go back to the 40's 50's and 60's. Wow wonderful to hear the music of my youth
What makes this song unique is the simple background music - double bass, percussion - and a killer voice.
RIP Dad 👍
My parents listened to her music. I remember seeing her records in my father's record collection, when I was a kid. Peggy Lee is legendary.
It’s definitely Jay’s sipping whiskey jazz, but my goodness each of these amazing women are an experience to behold.
cool bassline holding it all together
I love her singing, 'I don't want to play in your yard', The folks who live on the hill' and 'Is that all there is?
I think you'd enjoy hearing Andy Williams. His voice is so smooth. His song, The Days of Wine and Roses, which was from a movie of the same name is great. I love hearing him . Actually, he went to the same high school in Cincinnati, Ohio as my husband (Western Hills), and that may have contributed to why he's one of my husband's favorite singers. Andy Williams had a show, and he introduced the Osmonds to the public. (I think Donnie was around 6 years old.)
Perry Como too
And Mel Torme
My family and I saw Andy and the Osmonds at the Ohio State Fair back in the 60's.
My favorite Andy Williams' song is him doing It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year🎄
Oh y'all in for a real ride with this sultriness 😁. My moms generation of music passed onto us daughters 💗🕊️
Loves this song! Some Female Friday suggestions....

Etta James-my dearest darling
The Ronettes-Be My Baby
The Supremes- Ain't No Mountain High Enough

How about Maybe by the Chantels
her 'STORMY WEATHER' intepretation is peerless .... just beautiful ... recommend you hear it at least once !
After the song was written Peggy Lee said let me sing it I'll make it a hit. She did and it was.
This is from1958
This is from the days before FM radio became wide spread.
It was a monster hit and was played on most all AM stations.
"In May 1958, Peggy Lee recorded a cover version of the song in Hollywood, which featured significantly rewritten lyrics composed by Lee herself without credit "
Peggy was quite a talented lady
Peggy sang "He's a Tramp" in the Disney film "The Lady and The Tramp" and they animated her dog character called "Peg" sexy like her (the clip is on YT) ! Other ladies from this era try Doris Day "Secret Love" "Black Hills of Dakota" and Ella Fitzgerald anything!

There've been a million covers of "Fever" but Peggy Lee's is the best. I was first introduced to her through Disney's Lady and the Tramp. She does the voice of one of the dogs and sings the songs :)
She actually does the we are Siamese if you please, we are Siamese if you don't please purrrrrrow for the Siamese cats
She actually wrote this song but wasn't given credit because of the music biz at the time
