Ive heard that 420 started somewhere in cali, a group of high schoolers would always meet up after school to get together and smoke, Apparently by the time they would start smoking it would be 4:20. And thanks to the Internet it spread to the rest of the smokers community very quickly. Don't let 420 die!

Kids would say to their friends in passing, hey, meet you at the (wherever) after school to blaze, but teachers would over hear it, then they would get caught. So, as a code, they would just say 420 'cause that was the general time after class to meet, and teachers wouldn't know what the hell they were talking about.

I'm pretty sure that 420 being the "weed number" has something to do with the date of a particular piece of weed-related legislation. That's why April 20th is celebrated among stoners, and it's also why we say "four twenty" instead of saying "four hundred twenty" or "four two zero"

The reason people use 4/20 as the time of day to smoke weed, and day of the year to celebrate weed is that April 20th used to be the national stop smoking, or smoke out, day. It was a government campaign to get people to stop smoking celebrated on April 20th.
