I agree with the beer guy. You can take a 4" PVC pipe the length of those rods and put end caps and then cut a hole one side around the top... Fill with vinegar or evapo-rust and have this done in 1/10 the labor. I know you like to make gadgets but this is so painful and bad for the lathe. Beer good.
All that oxide dust on the lathe ways probably not gonna be good..... you'll have to be cleaning that really thoroughly......even then, some of it's probably going to get trapped. Maybe some guards and or dust extraction.......
I can clean it from the ways. Not so much my lungs. I’d rather give it a thorough cleaning when I’m done instead of leaning over it at 90 degrees trying to breathe through a dust mask. Your correct though it will need a thorough cleaning. This machine was totally taken apart when I purchased and cleaned. It was used for making piston rings for the perfect circle company years ago.
the irony here is that you could have accomplished the same thing with a single 5-gal jug of evapo-rust and a few hours of chilling with a beer waiting for the chemical to work its magic.

If you enjoy that kind of work, yes. However, I get my satisfaction out of making a functional tool.
