  • Today we're listening to the Hornet theme from the Hollow Knight OST. The most elegant Hollow Knight music I've heard so far. Definitely didn't sense a lot of evil in this. In fact it sounds kinda benevolent at times. I wonder what that says about Hornet?

In case you're curious but haven't looked into him at all, this is from Christopher Larkin's "About" page on his website:
"He transferred to Brighton High School in year 12 to study Specialist Music, and straight after, began his compositional studies at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide. His composition tutors were Mr. John Polglase, Prof. Charles Bodman Rae, and Prof. Graeme Koehne. While his studies transported him to the world of classical and contemporary classical music, he maintained a strong connection to electronic music, progressive rock and videogame scores."
Love these reviews & analyses you do (especially when it's a Hollow Knight song)!

Describing the fight as "sport" is very accurate. She is absolutely not an evil character. She fights The Knight to test their strength and see if they might be capable of defeating The Radiance. She fights seriously (and very elegantly); but the word "sport" works for another reason: The lets out occasional battle cries, just exclamations of energy as she attacks. Occasionally though, in between attacks she actually *laughs*. She's serious about it, but she's having fun.

One thing to note is that 90% of Hollow Knights soundtrack is made using VSTs. The only exception are the viola for the main theme (performed by Timothy Cheel), and the vocals for City of Tears (Amelia Jones). Because Hollow Knight is a relatively low budget indie title, they were unable to do live recordings for the soundtrack. I think however that Chris does an amazing job making the orchestral parts sound real, and the soundtrack overall is at such incredible high quality. Genuinely one of the most brilliantly composed soundtracks I've heard in video games.

Hornet's theme always gave me a feeling that she at first just thought the vessel would be easy to deal with only to realize that they're much stronger than she initially assumed, giving her hope, and leading to her letting lose a little, to show how strong she actually is...
Listening closely, her theme also contains a leit motif, related to the Pale Court, which also gives you context to her origin, long before you actually find she's the princess.
All in all, elegant, skillful and sophisticated descibes her well.
So does heroic, as she is a protector in her own right.

Man, I so want to hear your analysis of 'Broken Vessel' from Hollow Knight and 'Kwolok's Malaise' from Ori and the Will of the Wisps. They are two impressive tracks that really capture the essence of the parts of the game where they appear.
I would suggest also reviewing 'Your Best Nightmare' from Undertale, but since you are already playing the game, I kinda don't want to spoil the song in advance for you, since the first time you hear it in the game it will blow your mind... and what happens in the game when the song plays helps elevate the experience.
One last question: aside from videogames, would you analyse music from other media? You know: movies, series, anime...
Because there are some tracks from several movies, series and anime that would thoroughly delight a professional like you. I'm thinking along the lines of the OSTs of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Game of Thrones, or ReZero.

She's also the only child of the pale king who has a gender as the thousands of vessels (the players character included) are genderless as they were meant to be used as tools. And I really appreciate the way you make your vids because nowadays most reaction vids are basically some random people playing a clip, yes they react but thats it. They're sitting there, making faces and don't add anything at all to the vid (absolutely don't get how that format got so popular, could be sitting here doing that myself).
So thank you very much for that!

Hey! I've been loving the Hollow Knight music reactions, would you consider perhaps listening to the Outer Wilds soundtrack? It's won multiple awards and the DLC's soundtrack is being nominated for a Grammy. It's my absolute favorite game and soundtrack of all time.

I am absolutely loving these videos! Hollow knight is one of my favourite games of all time and I've had a passion for its music from the very begining. Its spooky how accurately you can read characters and themes just through the soundtrack alone!
Although its amazing how you can guess a characters nature by their theme I think youd enjoy doing some more environment tracks such as City of tears or Green path, some really beautful and relaxing music

It's really funny to me how you pointed out exactly what I was disussing with a friend two days ago - the fact that due to using samples and not real orchestra, there is some of that "stiffness" in this music. But because it's so extremely well done, instead of hurting it, it actually makes it kinda unique and special. OST of HK also sounds extremely profesional and like something you would hear at a concert so it keeps this weird balance between two worlds. I think that makes Christopher an insane composer (at least to me) because beside Alex Roe I can't think of a person that does classical music without a real orchestra and only with samples and yet makes it this freakin good. The harmony in Hornet is just insane and it still has melody hidden within it refering to Hornets origin (8-bit Music Theory did amazing video about it, even two, I recommend checking them out if you haven't, he goes really deep into it)
What is interesting about Silksong is that it's gonna have actual people playing the music this time around so we propably can expect a ton of soundtracks with a very different feel than Hollow Knight OST because of lack or smaller amount of samples, while still having the Larkins genius.

I like that I'm learning things from you. You're not just going "ooh aaah thats nice" you're going over what makes the songs tick and what the composer might or might not be going for.

Hornet is the last defender of the lands of Hollownest. She's a skilled fencer and fights using, essentially, a rapier on a long length of razor wire. Notably, she's not an evil foe; she tests you in battle, but her intentions are good.
Underscoring her upbeat theme of grace and skill, however, there's the ever present melancholy that pervades everything in the game; Hollownest is a dead kingdom, and though she calls herself its guardian, she knows full-well she guards a rotting corpse.

Cool video! Hearing this theme again remembered me of Lace, from the Silksong sample. It could be cool as we too are mostly in the dark about this game.
Also to note, Silksong music was performed by a live orchestra, rather than electronically. I wonder how much it improve the style of Christopher Larkin.

If I may offer a suggestion for another song, “Having Fallen, it was Blood” is a great track from Risk of Rain 2. The game deals with a more heavy metal-ish soundtrack and weird time signatures that I think you would find very interesting! Anyway, great video! Hornet’s theme is definitely one of my favorites from Hollow Knight.

I'd really love to hear your thoughts on one of the two "parody" songs from the OST, Broken Vessel and The Collector. Hollow Knight doesn't make a lot of use of leitmotif (at least compared to something like Undertale where it's basically everywhere), so it's really interesting how two places where they sort of do are these bizarre, deliberately off-sounding versions of more neutral songs.

Oh yeah, Christopher Larkin did an amazing job in the soundtrack. As you said, the sophisticated feeling is one of my favorite things of this track - the other being the emotions and flow f the melody.
I suggest basically anything from Chicory A Colorful Tale, it has music by Lena Raine. If you want a strong start, pick "Wielder Temple", if you want a bit that sets the overall tone of the game "A Colorful Tale" and if you want chill, you're soiled for choice and I suggest "Sips River".

One of my favorites theme from this beautiful game. Great analysis, like usual :)
There is a theme from this guy written for the upcoming (hopefully lol) game Silksong, that will be about Hornet, which is for chamber orchestra. After the success of Hollow knight they have more money so it's 100% true instruments and no VSTi, so the quality is even better. It's "Lace", and it's a banger ! Even if you don't make a video about it, be sure to listen, you'll love it, I'm sure.

You should listen to some inscription, like the trapper, the angle, Leshy's theme, the scrybe of magicks, or the scrybe of technology just to name my favorites. The trapper, the angle and leshy's theme are very atmospheric, the scybe of magicks is very retro-video-gamey, and the scrybe of technology is filled with metallic clucking and very intimidating. You should check them out. My top 3 would by Leshy's theme, the scybe of magicks, and the scrybe of technology.
