    All these idiots commenting are the same ones that show up at a public school board of education meeting and say why arnt the classes better and why arnt more programs available. No shit that's what everyone wants, I wish the roads were paved with gold , but the money has to come from somewhere. Are you willing to pay for it when it comes down to it. Clearly theirs a reason these buildings are abandoned. Your just the ones that are to lazy to do the research and think if you yell loud enough the problem will magically be fixed.

    I worked at Southbury Training School for nineteen years That's the PV village .I worked in all of those building ,It was shut down because of downsizing of the staff and because of the many clients that died . It was blocked off in 2015 0r 2016 .The grave yard in the back is old and has a lot of children buried there .These buildings we're staff houses and some clients lived in them to. The place in maintain by the grounds dept.

      Thank you Rich! After working there for nineteen years, I'm sure you have some stories to tell! A lot of children?? Wow...that's just terrible....and I cannot begin to imagine the absolute horrors that preceded many, if not all of those deaths. That's just mind boggling. BTW, what's 'PV' stand for in the aforementioned PV village..?

    You;re in Southbury , this is the Southbury training school it used to be a sprawling campus for people with " intellectual disabilities " this was resident housing the school is still open but very roll enrollment now so the homes aren't needed. this place was huge at one time a self contained community with its own police and fire departments even its own power station and yes a grave yard Im glad to see they still maintain it. CVH in Middletown was also like this once but the downsizing has left STATE schools and Hospitals wast lands , cool Vid guy .

      It's not a town, it's simply a collection of houses for staff of a small school for mentally disabled that is still functioning, but has too few disabled residents to warrant staff that formerly occupied these houses. Before screaming "scandal! scandal!!" take just 5 minutes to check the too-mundane facts.

      Give it time but not too much time. Thats the way Ct deals with an already shortfall in money. They just raise taxes until people cant afford to live there and move out like I did. I left my house and that was 17 years ago and the taxes were 5400.00 and now they are about 12k. When Ella Grasso was governor the state was incredible and now unless you make about 200k per year, youll never live anywhere nice and be able to afford a vacation...Pretty damn sad

      papa sodipops You have to admit, the whole concept of lawns and lawn care is incredibly bizarre.
      We spend our time off work shaving down and manicuring our individual little squares of grass, and scoff at those who allow it to grow for more than a couple of inches.
      A while back I was reading someone's thoughts on the absurdity of lawn care (which is where I'm drawing these ideas from), and he or she was pointing out how useful they could be if they were treated and used as gardens for food and materials, rather than just being the visual equivalent of green concrete. Hard not to agree.

I understand they wish to convert it into senior citizen housing. It's a beautiful area and very safe. It's good to see this again! It brings back many happy memories.

    My grandparents, parents all worked for STS. My grandparents and my father lived on grounds in the personnel housing. I have wonderful memories of going to visit STS, volunteering on trips with the residents. The car shows and flea markets on the grounds. Buying our Christmas trees from the farm. My parents to this day still buy their tree from there. The gatehouse is named after my grandmother. It’s very sad to see the residents placed into group homes. I personally have worked for a group home and it is nothing like STS. At STS the residents had jobs, a store, a restaurant, a farm, a greenhouse, the freedom to walk around the grounds. My parents knew most of the residents as children. They both retired from there and it broke their hearts to see them taken from the only place they knew as home. Both of my grandparents are buried in this cemetery. They had such a connection with STS that when they were given the opportunity to purchase plots there they did.

    Southbury Training School was built in the 1930s as a place to house the intellectually disabled. It is and was self-sufficient from the town of Southbury.
    In 1976, John Lennon donated his 1970 Oscar statuette for auction to raise money for the school - it netted $600. It was auctioned again in 1992 for $110,000 with a portion of those proceeds going to the school.
    In 1986, admissions to STS were closed. There was a current population of 1,111. The Department of intellectual disabilities was directed to attempt to place residents in group homes and other such settings.
    The facility was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
    In 1997, STS was prohibited from accepting any new residents. STS had 782 residents remaining.
    As of 2000, STS maintained a staff of 1,700 people. STS had 696 residents remaining.
    As of 2001, STS had 639 residents remaining. The average age was 55, and the average resident had been at STS for 43 years. The State intends to continue decreasing the number of residents through placement in other settings and through the death of residents. As of 2018, STS has 199 residents remaining.

    That is part of Southbury Training School. There are still a few residents on other parts of the many acres of land which are well maintained. They also operate two thrift stores on the property which donations of merchandise and purchase of merchandise helps fund the remaining residents. It's a good thing for everyone involved and the volunteers are very nice people. I love that place.

  • @peteyroxurmom
    @peteyroxurmom 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I've seen this happen in CT, especially near the casinos. Someone will propose creating a huge tourist destination and claim the land on behalf of the tribe, put a lean on everyone's homes if they don't leave, and if the projects don't get the funding in the end, it leaves whole neighborhoods abandoned. I saw a whole row of mansions left to overgrow and rot because someone wanted to make a huge marina on a river, and now it's just a ghost town. I've met people who go through this and think that renting out their homes will do them some good, but the "tenants" end up smashing everything, making it worthless. Though I'm not sure if that's what's going on in this particular neighborhood, it very well might be one of them.

  • @MillerMeteor74
    @MillerMeteor74 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I read one of the comments about this, that it was part of a school for people with "intellectual disabilities". There's a mental institution not too far from here that had a short street of homes, similar to what we see here, but just a single street. The vandals found the homes and tore them apart. Then they were all demolished. What a shame.

      @@metrixed_rob1916 - 4 grand a year for a house that size and style in ct. give or take. of course if you live by the governors mansion in west hartford in a 10k square foot home its gonna cost you. if anything the tax problem in ct is that you pay taxes on ur car every year. a bullshit scam that needs to stop. but once again if you drive a ferrari of course your gonna hate ct. my 06 vw costs around 300 a year. small is nice. used to live in north carolina and a trip across the state taking 7 hours is silly. if anything ct is starting to suck because of over-development. if theres a farm or a forest its likely to become a housing development or a strip mall. even state forests aren't safe. the state holds a lotto for the meshomasic forest and the winners get to mow down a certain acreage of trees under the political guise that a healthy forest is a young forest. bollocks!

      DoctorMax This place is privately owned actually. So no waste of tax dollars is happening here. But in general you are right, the wasting of tax dollars is disgusting and the more we are taxed, the more money that gets wasted. Which is one of many reasons why privatization of many services and general downsizing of federal government is much more efficient. Of course its never that simple, but as a general rule, public services are unpleasant and private services are better the more you spend, but more importantly, they are run efficiently. If our tax dollars were spent on hiring the most competent and efficient contractors instead of unions and state or federal workers, it would cost half for better results. I am speaking very generally, I know, but it is easy to realize that when paying for state pensions or every retired worker or paying for 4 guys making $50 and hour to stand around doing a one man job, its going to cost WAY more than hiring a private contractor who wants to bid competitively and do a good job so he gets more work.

    As to the people asking why, there was a lawsuit brought by parents, the settlement of which is still in effect. Most of the "kids" enrolled are senior citizens at this time and there is only a handful but the residents can't be relocated without the agreement of the court.

    To those who are complaining about taxes in CT:
    You will never get low taxes as long as you have 169 towns and almost 200 school districts. Let your cities annex and consolidate towns with nearby towns. Check around the country and you will find that consolidated regional governments work better and save money.

    Just went their, very creepy at night! It's really cool, I recommend it to anyone who wants to explore some abandoned ruins. Bring thick boots (lots of broken glass) You can get into the houses with ease as many of the doors are removed, lots of creepy shit to find inside, their are signs posted saying that it's under camera surveillance but I doubt that's true. Inside the houses we found strange drawings, folders full of medical records scattered everywhere and a basement flooded with a foot of water with cryptic art on the side just to name a few sights.

    This is crazy. I have seen areas in China where there are new developments being built but no one can afford to move there so they have these huge areas with malls and 30, 40 story condominiums completely empty. But to see something similar here in the USA is crazy. My god what is happening to this country. The government has so much money being spent on things that are not really priority. Why can't the money be put in areas that need help. We don't need anyone going out in space. There is no one suffering in Mars. People are suffering right here in our front and back yards. It always takes a huge tragedy to happen in order for people to wake up. Even I wouldn't mind having one of those homes. Looks like a nice queit area to live.

    In 1984, the first major lawsuit regarding the conditions at STS was filed by the United States of America against the State of Connecticut. A consent decree settled the suit in 1986, requiring that the State increase the conditions of both the care and the facilities. In 1996, the United States District Court for the District of New Haven held the State in contempt of the consent decree.[3] In 1997, an order was issued and a special master appointed to oversee the School. In 2005, Governor Rell requested the removal of David Ferleger as special master, also using the opportunity to request the removal of special masters as a whole.[2] Without granting the state a hearing, the federal court rejected the state’s request to end Mr. Ferleger’s work for the court as special master. “As a federally appointed "special master," Ferleger is responsible for making sure Connecticut complies with a 10-year-old U.S. Department of Justice order to improve conditions at the facility for the mentally retarded. In her ruling, Burns said that the state "pointed to nothing" in Ferleger's execution of his duties over the past eight years to suggest they were deficient. Hartford Courant, “Ruling Keeps Monitor on Job: State Loses Bid to Remove Training School ‘Special Master’” Colin Poitras, December 15, 2005 [1] [2] The state unsuccessfully contested most of the special master’s reports. As one historical summary of the case puts it, “the court ultimately accepted all of the reports.” Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse. [3] “Between July 30, 1997, and February 22, 2006, the Special Master submitted twenty-six status reports, sixty-three topic-specific reports, and numerous other reports, recommendations, and analyses. Based on the docket, it appears that the Special Master addressed (1) individualized planning, (2) community placement policies, (3) abuse and neglect, (4) the rights of persons with disabilities, (5) human rights and behavioral programming reviews, (6) occupational and physical therapy, (7) medical and dental care, (8) dosage benchmarks, (9) physical restraint techniques and standards, (10) mortality investigations, (11) case management and advocacy, (12) quality assurance plans, (13) facility upkeep, safety, and sanitation, (14) transportation, (15) employment of direct care staff, medical professionals, and specialized therapists, and (16) staff development. The defendants contested most of the Special Master's reports, but the court ultimately accepted all of the reports. For instance, on February 22, 2004, the court accepted and adopted the Special Master's report on Southbury's development of mortality review procedures.” Civil Rights Litigation Clearinghouse. [4] In the court’s “Order Purging Defendants of Contempt and Ending Active Judicial Oversight,” (March 2006), the court expressed “the gratitude of the Court for his service.” (p. 3), and stated, “Special Master David Ferleger has effectively rendered a great public service in shepherding this process through to its conclusion. He has submitted to the Court twenty-six periodic status reports, sixty-three numbered topic-specific reports, many special reports and recommendations to the parties, and numerous other analyses.” (p. 11). The court concluded that the remedial process had resulted in substantial positive change at Southbury Training School: “The contempt finding has resulted in the reform of Southbury Training School mandated in the Remedial Plan and its associated plans and orders. The remedial process has done much to advance the interests of the residents of Southbury Training School. Ten years ago, this Court found systemic flaws at STS which placed residents at risk of great harm, even death. Today, residents of STS are safer and benefit from a state-of-the- art model of institutional care as Defendants have met the “adequate care” requirements in the Remedial Plan and, in many instances, gone beyond the court-mandated requirements to provide ‘best practices.’” (p. 12). Court Ruling, March 2006, United States v. State of Connecticut. [5] [6] IN 2006, STS was released from judicial oversight.[4]

The factories started leaving and there were hiring freezes in the white collar insurance companies. There wasn't much left. People would love to return, but it sounds like it got progressively worse. You can't live only on trees and air.

      Ok, thanks for informing of this. We have entire plazas that are now boarded up - which is very eerie. These were all thriving when I moved to NJ late in 2004. I'm starting to see some of this reopen as new businesses again but not so much with residential areas. From 2008 - 2013 there wasn't a street around most neighborhoods that didn't have 1, 2, or 3 homes up for sale. It's the closest thing to a full blown depression I ever witnessed before. All because municipalities got greedy with raising property taxes too many times in too short a span.

      This is all the libs, and so called progressives, who in reality are regressivess, from the democratic party.There never ending demand for more money to support more deadbeats, and illegals, has sucked dry Connecticut's tax revenue. Over one half of these people who live here, are on some form of subsidy, and most of the rest of the tax payers money is illegally being diverted away from where its badly needed, to fix our failing infrastructure, to support sanctuary city's. Until Ct. changes this self destructive policy, it will continue to deteriorate till it ends up like California, which is billions in debt, and near financial collapse.
      like most of the rest of America needs to rid itself of non self sustaining people. They move from state to state , sucking all the resorses dry. When there is nothing left to drain, they move on to a new host. They are nothing more than locusts. I know the Republican party is no bargain, but keep voting democrat, and you will finish off what's left of this once prosperous state.

    I lived my whole childhood (80s/90s) in Southbury and never knew about this. Even with all the 'tall tales' older kids would tell you, and how much we used to drive around looking to get into trouble, I can't believe I didn't know about this.
    It makes sense now that I read more though.. I always stayed away from the STS. It had a creepy feeling and at the same time felt like a place you shouldn't drive around and gawk at - lots of people having a really tough time there, it wasn't a public place. The only connection i ever had to it was someone I went to school with, his father was a cook there. There were a lot of rumors of poor treatment of patients there and threats by the government to shut it down.
    I did have a friend who lived really close to it (Flag Swamp Rd) and also had piano lessons with a guy that lived on Cassidy Rd way up behind where the property ended, but I never drove around the property itself. Time to take a look on a map and figure out where this is.

    If it was as simple as vacated properties because the staff in the area was let go, surely whoever holds the notes on this property would be happy to have sold it off even if one by one. I was from CT and try to keep up and I also know of people that were employed at the Southbury training school, they are clueless. I can understand not sharing the name of the town, but why so secret about why it was abandoned? When it is this well covered the first thing we can think of is that the State of CT has a secret to hide, maybe "ashame"?

    • @basehead617
      @basehead617 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The property is owned by the state. They're usually not so willing to sell things off, but would rather repurpose it.

      I am reading many of the comments and the fact that "has been abandoned" is kind of strange because the houses don't look falling apart, dirty, even the grass around the houses don't look "so abandoned". Honestly, it seems like something else is happening underground.The place looks very nice and peaceful.

    Those who say you are gimmee gimmee if you expect a decent school system obviously are too young to recall the time when American had a large middle class and one person working could support a family of 5 or 6. You could come right out of a nice, painted, yard-mown school and go straight into college because you had been prepared for it. If people don't wake up and stop blaming the complainers - because it is the Corporate Welfare State that sucks the life out of our former respectable institutions - then it just shows you think you are not WORTH have your own f'ing tax dollars used to create a good society. I guess you enjoy slaving away just to buy food for Walmart's employees because the billionaires don't pay them enough to buy food. Maybe what you like is being charged $1,000 per month for a life-saving medication that costs $20 a month in other countries. Get some self-respect and stop defending your rapists!

Ill guess that maybe the state with all their wisdom.....NOT bought that land with houses to either build like a highway, mall or its a flood zone area? I keep thinking about the new mall they were going to build along front street in west haven and they bought the houses but never built the mall. It almost looks like everyone was abducted Not only that. But it looked like some of those graves had fresh dirt. Love to know what city...Spooky isnt it? Many Buildings in CT are white with black shutters because of the original colonial style. Zoning regulations at one time did not permit people to change the color or style in some towns. I don't know if that is the case here. But having grown up in CT (since 1961) it was a highly respected school at one time. I haven't lived there in many years and I am shocked by this story.
