    • @jimgreene4923
      @jimgreene4923 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is merely a suggestion, but take a shovel & move the soil from end to end, squaring it up & making it look good. When I was the sexton of a 80 acre cemetery 3 decades ago, I waited about a year before attempting this, so the ground could naturally settle but if you want to put sod or smooth it out now to plant grass seed, that too can be done. Its also possible, that the soil was mounded up & some needs to be removed, in that case, if that is the issue, remove it to ground level & you may need to contact the cemetery grounds staff or sexton before attempting this.

    I would add from my experience working with a monument company, instead of digging the hole so deep and long just get some post hole diggers and put 2-3 post of concrete down to stabilize it. It will help cut down on all that concrete

    • @CougarLand
      @CougarLand 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If the rest of the ground moves while one part doesn't......well you know what's going to happen. There's only two choices, either dig it all below the frost line...or don't. In northern areas that have a 4 foot or more frost line, they just have to settle for not having a deep foundation. Of course over several decades, gravestones start leaning in one way or another.

    • @TryingToGetGood
      @TryingToGetGood ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CougarLandWe’ve started digging foundations actually shallower depending on size of the monument. Maybe 10-12 inches maybe 20, fill with a packing stone and then pour your base on top of that. If the ground ever settles or stone is leaning, you can take it off, adjust, and put it back on. A lot easier than digging up 3 foot of concrete block. Don’t understand why this is still common practice to dig so deep. The more ground you disrupt, the more likely it is ground around it to move.

    You sure made it a tougher job on the person who has to cut the grass by putting the ground/grass right up against the base stone. One of the purposes of the foundation is to put it level with the ground so mowers can cut around it easily and not damage the grave with things like weed trimmers and the mower itself.

    • @roku5071

      We were able to have a bigger base stone for our sons gravestone. Mainly because we were told that we could put things on the base and that they would be protected a bit more

    • @brandon18054
      @brandon18054 ปีที่แล้ว

      Despite being more work to trim around, I think it looks much nicer without the exposed concrete around monuments. If it’s a small cemetery or there are issues keeping it maintained, it makes sense why you would want oversized foundations. But that concrete doesn’t look nice and fresh when it gets old. Especially if the family would like to plant flowers in front of the monument.

    As the guy that trims around 800 markers in a local cemetery, I really wish NOTHING
    grew within 2 inches of that marker. String trimming 800 markers AFTER mowing
    the entire place is some serious walking. Oddly, at 58, I prefer working in
    Cemeteries since they are far more challenging than cutting empty lots.
    What DID I do for a real living? Software Design Engineer.
    Free at last from the boring desk job...
    Sad story:
    My boss is a master of hitting stones with the mower blade and backing into them,
    tipping them over. He hates the place and I'm trying my best to STEAL the
    contract from him, mainly due to his neglect and damage.
    Mowing and trimming are both done early in the morning when the grass
    has enough turgor and moisture content to make the cut easier. After
    the Florida sun has cooked that grass, it will just lay over, and not cut properly.
    Afterwards, I strap on a huge leave blower and grab a garbage picker stick
    so I can put things back on the marker after accidentally blowing them off.
    I HATE ALL THE TRINKETS people leave on the markers. Wind knocks them
    over and they break, THEN I gotta pick up this !!!! mess, or my boss will
    grind it up and throw glass everywhere.
    All done.
    Mr. Brown
    North Central Florida

      As a grieving parent, I apologize for those 'trinkets' that make your job so much harder...
      I truly wish that I didn't have to leave trinkets on my childs gravestone. I would so much prefer to be able to have given them to him in person these last 10 years, but that option was taken from me.
      Also, sorry that you seem to feel that those 'trinkets' are there only to make your life/job so much harder. Hopefully you don't have to experience leaving trinkets to your loved ones

    • @cloudbase7799
      @cloudbase7799 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leaving trinkets on a loved one's gravestone is for the benefit of the one leaving trinkets. It does nothing for the loved one that passed. Keep their memory alive by doing good/kind deeds for someone living, in memory of the deceased loved one.

    The actual grave is too far from the headstone. . Why do ya'll do it like that? They don't do that here in Arkansas. . The middle of the headstone is directly in the middle of the 2 graves (husband/wife). If it's just one person, then the head stone is centered. . . . Missouri is dumb
