Hertz Rent2Buy Rent 2 Buy review and advice

  • My experience with Hertz Rent2Buy and tips and advice on buying a car this way. This was my second rent2buy purchase.
Correction - I misspoke about the warranty in the video - The car did come with a limited 1 year warranty from Hertz in addition to the balance of the manufacturers warranty.
July 2023 - Both Hertz Rent2Buy cars still going strong - 165k miles on the 5 year old Tiguan and 140k on the 10 year old car Versa. Just routine maintenance since 2020 update. Both cars now paid off!
I think the most important reason for not having issues is that I did all the routine maintenance as soon as I got the cars home -oil change, air filter, cabin air filter, spark plugs, new tires, radiator flush, brake pads. If I were doing it again I would add transmission fluid change - even on a 'closed' transmission.
Would seem wise no matter where you get a used car from unless you have a very detailed maintenance and repair history.
May 2020 - 87,000 miles now and still happy . I need to get another set of tires because I originally bought car tires instead of SUV tires the first time - really hurt the handling. Live and learn. Runs fine, no leaks, my only issue is my 'tall' son managed to put a dent in the door when he first got his license.
My other Hertz Rent2Buy a 2013 Versa with 120,000 miles now hasn't had any major work - just preventative maintenance. That one has had a very minor alignment issue since day one but not a big deal. The only major issue with that is a slipping transmission - that's a Nissan issue and nothing to do with how it came to us from Hertz.

Really appreciate this video. Great information, thank you. So far my phone inquiries into this program have been pretty disappointing. Every Hertz rep I've talked to has been rude, abrupt, rushed, inconsiderate and totally lacking in even baseline customer service skills.

I flew from Seattle to Salt Lake City for a Rent2Buy offer from Hertz for a 2018 Mazda 3. The program advertised a warranty, but the contract stated the car was sold “as is”, which seemed misleading to me. They insisted on financing the car, even though I had the full amount ready to transfer within 1-3 days. The financing terms were not favorable, with a high interest rate and a long term. I was concerned about potential defects in the car that might surface later, and the “as is” clause could prevent me from making a claim. They tried to rush me into signing the no warranty paper and the financing agreement. I walked out without any regrets other than what I paid for the rental I didn’t need and the time wasted with them.

Wow. Thanks so much for telling us this. I was about to do a Rent To Buy but reconsidering now. I don't want to finance, I want to write a check and pay in full on the spot. Do they not accept that?
Also, they advertise on their website a 7-Day Return/Refund guarantee "You can return your Hertz Certified or Rent2Buy vehicle within 7 days/250 miles after purchase, whichever comes first. Bring it back and pay the difference for another, higher-priced vehicle or we'll refund you." Without this option I would never buy from Hertz. I want to take the car to a mechanic right after purchasing and return it for refund if any major problems.

@@sl2608 In the contract they have a section specifically for renouncing to all warranty, they said it was standard. It might be something on that particular location but be aware if you sign that you don't get any form of warranty. They didn't accept cash, nor check, and while I can rent the car while it clears, if for any reason there's any delay they'll charge the credit, which was at a 10% rate. They don't accept credit. I assumed it was going to be credited before the rental expired, but the renouncing the warranty was a showstopper. I'll consider buying in the future, but not with those conditions. Maybe it was just that Salt Lake City location but be alert.

@@ilannknochen All the cars that I've looked at in their Rent To Buy have come with the standard, very limited Hertz 12mo/12000 miles warranty, which I consider pretty worthless once you read the fine print. The tricky words in the "warranty" being: "LIMITED" powertrain warranty and "COVERED" parts to repair or replace." A lot of slick-talk mumbo jumbo. Had the car you wanted, 2018 Mazda, already exceeded the manufacturer's warranty, typically 3yr/36,000? And if so, then Hertz didn't offer any extended warranty? Thus leaving only their 12mo/12000?

Most of the used cars on cars lots today are former rentals anyway. Might as well go buy one from the Rental car place that they come from. Hertz gives you a 12 month/12k mile warranty that you wouldn't get from a regular dealer.

Well, things have changed. Drastically. I used to think this was a good way to buy a used car. Not anymore. Hertz, Avis and Enterprise have partnered with Uber and other delivery companies and now allow delivery drivers to rent their cars -- even for up to 6 months without having to bring the car back in for inspection and maintenance. I was considering Hertz and Avis for a used car, but no more. What's you opinion, Mr. Butler? No longer a good option for buying in my opinion.

Last winter I bought a 1 yr old Tiguan S with 19K miles thru Rent2buy, about $10K or 40% off what it sold for new. Second time for me. I might add that almost all their vehicles will be base models so may not have the options you want, for example few will have heated seats. I can't swear to it but the Rent2buy vehicles seem to be in better shape, have less miles, and cheaper than the ones on their car sales lots. The models from their Prestige Collection, usually higher end vehicles, seem to be in better shape too. They also use AutoCheck not Carfax, but I was told they will only send a vehicle that has been in an accident to auction.

Thank you so much for this vid, I've been thinking about this for a lil over a month...I'm confused about 2 things, did you rent the car that you bought? Or were you able to rent 1 and choose another.. My Hertz has 17 of the same car also were you able to rent 1 make and change your mind and rent another make..Not sure if I want the Rogue or the Compass.. Think I'll go with my credit union for financing

About the rental. I believe the car you reserve for Rent to Buy is the one you can get at the Rent to Buy price. However, you aren’t required to purchase it, there may be a car on the lot at the Hertz dealership you prefer but the price won’t necessarily be the same. When I was looking it generally seemed that cars on Rent to Buy were cheaper that the same car off a Herz lot. Both times I’ve done Rent-to-Buy the salesperson doing the paperwork offered to show us cars on the lot. I suspect that the dealership makes more or the salesman gets a commission if they get you to switch to one of the cars off the lot.
So when you reserve a rent to buy you actually do have to rent that car - one hour or a weekend. The rental price is refunded if you purchase the car, not sure if they refund it if you change your mind and pick one off the lot. Even though Hertz is one company, it seems like the rental side (rent to buy) and the sales side (Hertz dealership) operate almost as different companies. Kind of adds to the confusion.
Credit union is a good idea, get a preapproval letter and take that with you. Make sure when figuring the cost to add on the ‘document fee’ (title transfer and plates). Each state has a different rate - call the Hertz help number on the rent to buy page to find out what it is in your state.
      Good luck!

Rent to buy, make it sound like you just rent the car as part as of the payment every month.
Very misleading, I would not call that a rent to buy!
If you would go down to most rental places, you you pay 2 months in advance. Take your tv home and make payments on it on till the 28 months are what ever the contract says.
They need to rename their rent to buy program . Because that not really rent to buy!

130,000+ now on both my Rent2Buy cars. the 2017 Tiguan (in video) is going fine. Routine maintenance is all I've done so far. The 2013 Versa (Rent2Buy in 2015) need a transmission last year (very common problem on that era Nissans) but otherwise fine. I did find out that the Versa had had some body work done on it that I didn't know about when I bought the car. Didn't have any impact on driving or reliability but would have been nice to know ... I didn't take it anywhere to be inspected before purchase, guess I was lucky on that one.

Don't know but once you've decided on the car you are interested in take the car info and VIN # to your bank and ask them if you would qualify for a loan. You could also call the 1-800 number for Hertz and find out where you would be doing the sales paperwork and call that location to speak to Finance Department. Be sure you get your credit score before hand and have your income info so you can get an accurate quote. You can get your score for free - you are entitled to a free credit report (once?) a year from each of the credit reporting agencies or you can get it for free through some credit cards or services like creditkarma. Remember the total cost will be price + document fees + taxes. I think that Hertz can give you the final total beforehand to share with your bank.

Purchase price and your credit rating. I would probobly figure out which car I was interested in and then call my bank with the vehicle info to get a good idea. When going through the rental process is there a deposit? Cause wether you use credit or debit there is always a deposit the regular way to rent a car. But with the rent2buy program is it the same with the deposit or your just paying for the 3 days

    • @ebutler5202
      @ebutler5202  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I don't believe so, but it's been a long time since I last rented a car. The 'rent' part of Rent2Buy is renting the car in the normal Hertz rental process, same as if you were just renting a car for the weekend. The '2Buy' part is handing them a check for the price listed on the website + state fees + tax - coupon (I assume there are still coupons) - the rental fee. Hertz went bankrupt during covid so things might have changed since I last bought a car from them, but that's how it worked back then.
If you do a loan your bank may require you to put money down. I would call your bank or the finance people at Hertz and ask.

I didn't take it because I can get oil changes for just the cost of supplies where I work. I was very tempted though just for the extra keys. Not sure if it was a VW thing or if they offer it with other brands. Programmable keys are expensive.
