For THREE YEARS i suffered from the Hyken headrest jabbing into my upper back.... I was just about to get rid of the thing and buy a different chair. GOD BLESS YOU MIKE 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
I'm 6'00" tall. I just received and put the chair together yesterday. The first thing I noticed was how the headrest hit me at the top of the shoulders. After trying to adjust it with the stock setting, I was considering just removing it and not having a headrest, or sending back and continuing my search for a good office/gaming chair. This video saved it for me. Thank you SO much for this hack!
I'm on my second Hyken chair and used this video both times to do the headrest mod. I'm not even tall (5'10") and that shit kept digging into my upper back. Thank you for the thorough and detailed steps, even listing what size tools are needed.
@@Mikeattempts The lock on the reclining mechanism gave out, mesh seat lost tension, and the foam underneath ripped and came out. I actually had to replace the seat for both of the chairs I owned. The Hyken is a decent budget chair for $100 but the materials don't last. I've been eyeing the Hbada E3 or Ergohuman for my next chair.
@@BingSway Good to know, I'll check out those other 2 chairs you mentioned. My Hyken chair was made by Union & Scale (or something like that) and came with a 7-year warranty (if I remember correctly) but the newer ones seem to be Staples brand and come with a 5-year warranty. Either way, if the chair fails with normal use, you might wanna give 'em a call.
Thanks for this! Just did it and i was about to make a hole in the mesh like every other reddit tutorial. This saved my chair from having two little holes haha.
update: I just stuck the screwdriver through the mesh, and then used a small allen key to return the mesh to its normal configuration, and you cannot tell i stuck a screwdriver through it. Headreast sits much much better now. thanks.
You Rock! Works great. I'm 6 ft tall. Pro Tip. Mine was brand new and everything was firm. Used a heat gun (or blow dryer on high) to heat up the plastic, just enough to make pulling the cross arm out.
Just bought the chair this week. Seemed to be ok on reclining but annoying that the headrest wasn't adjustable for a tall person sitting upright. After following your video adjustments, I'll keep the chair. Thank you!
worked well for us. wife 5'7 and now its perfect for her. me at 5'11 i just need a bit more height. gonna add brackets to the headrest to raise it a bit.
Great info! I’ll give this a go. Might you know where I can get a replacement bracket; the part that attaches the headrest to the rest of the chair… plastic broke at the two bolts that connect to chair back.
I think these chairs have like a 7-year warranty or something like that. So, if yours is still under warranty, you can just call Union & Scale (800-270-9557) and they should send you out a new piece free of charge.
The mesh on the headrest is broken…..is it possible to replace the headrest…and if so any recommendations which headrest is compatible with this chair?
Putting that back together without a ratchet (so just a Philips head through the mesh) was a major PITA but I’ve got it in and now it’s at a decent height. I’m barely 5’10 and it’s still not so much a “head rest” as it is a “base of my skull rest”. Anyone taller, the chair is nice but you might have to just not use the headrest at all tbh.
Yeah, they definitely don't make it easy. Since this is such a popular chair, I'm surprised they haven't updated it to add a better headrest adjustment for a wider range of people.
@@Mikeattempts yeah that’s the wild part to me - 5’10 is incredibly average, so who did they have test this chair for comfort? The rest of the chair is fine but this is such a huge oversight. Either way, guide was perfect!

can't we remove headrest mount first ?
@@Mhzpk Yeah, sure. I just found it easier to work on the headrest with the mount still attached to the chair but do whatever works for you. :)

I'm glad the video was helpful, thanks for the feedback! Out of curiosity, what happened to your 1st Hyken that it required replacement?

Didn't think it was going to raise it enough for me and I had to jerry rig a tool for it, but by god, It's perfect now. Thank you SO much!

Thanks! Nice tip with the blow dryer, I'm sure it'll come in handy for other people watching.
This tutorial saved my chair
Glad to hear it, thanks for watching!
This is perfect. Thank you. Only challenge was putting the neck rest back on (big hands).
Yeah, it's tight in there! :)

The warranty is at least 5 years, call 'em up and get a replacement.
@ thanks for the reply
the mod worked, but it was a pain in the ass unscrewing from inside of headrest.
I agree, it's tight in there, glad it worked out for you.
nice work, good video

I'm not sure, possibly.
