As a Malaysian, the accents some of the VAs had during the game (especially Mayday when she gets overly frustrated) just added so much character to this game. Having Zuke's big bro speaking full blast Malay was just wow. Love this game!
I was crying at the end of Yinu’s solo because her mom got so carried away by the fame and glory of Yinu’s success that she forgot what really makes Yinu happy. It kind of reminds me of that show, dance moms, where the moms use their daughters’ career as an excuse to validate their own insecurities about themselves.
The other sad thing about Yinu’s destroyed piano, it was a gift from her father who presumably died, which is the other reason her mom got so carried away, he also taught Yinu how to play himself, so her mom probably feels like she has to go the extra mile
What I love most about Mayday and Zuke is the fact that they don't really seem to be the type to go around looking for fights. Like they keep showing up to these major performers expecting a musical battle or something. But- each and every time- the boss just immediately starts throwing hands.
Zuke: (Basically) So what if you're right? That you won't be able to find anyone else who can "complete" you? You're better than that: You complete yourself. That is perhaps the most anti-anime thing I've ever heard, and I love it, because it's adorable
She has to realize how to love herself and not rely on another significant other to make her happy in her life. Her story is about learning how to learn to love yourself being on your own.
I love that in the end, May and Zuke realize that Kliff only cares about proving Tatiana wrong, and not what's good for the public. And as such, leave him in the dust. Also Tatiana punching him in the face and saying "I don't owe you anything." Was SOOOOOOO satisfying. Like, it saddens me that there are people like Kliff out there who think famous people owe them the world because they made them famous. Like they only owe you gratitude, that's it. If they don't agree with you, they aren't obligated to stand by you. And the fact that Kliff is basically an incel makes me laugh.
I mean I agree! But Kliff wasn't an incel. He was just a fan of rock in general and represents Mayday and Zuke going the same route NSR did. Kliff wanted rock on top like EDM was. It was mentioned he felt betrayed when Tatiana changed sides. Soo, no he wasn't an incel, just a serious fan of the Goolings and Rock.
It's also a moment for the game's title to show some meaning. You'd think the story was a "straight road": heroes defeating the bad guys all the way to the final boss, and once you beat her everything is fine, right? The typical story of revolutionaries fighting against oppression, right? Wrong! @@weaboi1461 nicely said. I'd say it's quite interesting because he's also older and she's fairly new compared to his experience. I think it's a great way to compare and understand how the game works in carrying the weight of the stories and why the characters do what they do.
I mean all the bands you fight aren’t horrible, but I agree these areas are too oversaturated and rock isn’t what it used to be...but it’s a balance we need. Too much of one leads to not enough of another and that ain’t it chief. Btw I’d kill to live in a city like that. It would be beautiful!
@@doubledownpleasegosubtotte4274 A city that has mainly music playing and having music artists performing of all kinds of genres could technically be possible. The main unrealistic part of the city is how electricity is produced (And maybe it won't be as full with lights irl as in the game)
@@Darkheartfries250 the other unrealistic part is entire sections being elevated mechanically, and that system being controlled by a single random record player out in the open where everyone can get to it
when you get to the roots of Rock however it makes sense to make it the central catalyst in a game like this. Rock started as the sound of rebellion, a cry for change, the tug against chains of oppression, it was a call to action for people who were tired and angry never meant to become what has been churned out in mass production. Just like how a frozen dinner will never be as good as food you prepare yourself music made by the corporate machine will never resonate the same
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. No Straight Roads' gameplay looks a touch on the weak side to me, but that doesn't seem to interfere with the story, nor the experience and fun. The music is fantastic, the characters are well acted and relatable, and the story beautifully illustrates what makes the music scene (and life itself) rich and full, and how losing sight of what's truly important is so damaging to everyone. I especially loved how Mayday came to the realization that Bunk Bed Junction was becoming the new NSR, and more than anything I LOVED how Tatiana, Mayday, and Zuke put their differences aside to do what was best for Vinyl City. Very uplifting. Thank you for playing through this game!
Eve is like a combination between Lady Gaga, Mirage from The Incredibles, and the Batman villain, Two-face. She just has a very strikingly artistic and unique design compared to most of the other characters (and pretty much any character from any animated movie or cartoon for that matter). As an artist, I can get a full appreciation of her overall aesthetic. The devs did a great job designing her.
this game's art is so good i literally get actual goosebumps looking at this. seriously the animations and character designs bring literal shivers down my body from how amazing they are
SO is no one going to talk about how Mayday has a sweet moment when she tells a bunch of teens to be careful about what they sign up for and is really sweet with them, to her and Zuke actively picking on a 9 year old girl and her Mom with Mayday even breaking that said girls treasured piano right in front of her? No one? Or that they saw how sad she was about the thing and didn't say anything sweet like they did with the group of teens?
I think it was then having a self realization moment seeing how important that piano was. Another way is that with the college students, they weren’t as in as much emotional distress as Yinu and her Mom was in. Sometimes you gotta give people space and that’s what happens with Yinu.
@@CosmicVibin True... Looking back, this was probably a knee-jerk reaction because Yinu was/is a child. And, to me, it was kind of obvious that the piano was going to be a big deal and very important to her. But, as you pointed out, Mayday and Zuke likely didn't noticed that until it was too late.
I think they realized that it wasn’t an appropriate moment to step in and apologize. It was a moment between her and her mother, and they probably never even knew how important it was ;-;.
Yeaaaaaaaah. After seeing Yinu's boss battle, I thought "hmm yeah maybe this is the part where they start to think maybe their fighting against NSR isn't exactly all-moral."
For some reason, watching this game reminds me of Cuphead where you instantly face against bosses all until the final stage, it reminds me of A Hat in Time where enemies help you in the end! Crazy right?
Right? It wouldn't be out of character for this game at all! Btw, I used to ID as agender and pan, too (I see those pride flags in your pfp) but turns out I'm just enby transmasculine and bisexual with a heavy preference for women and enbies :) Seeing those flags together brought back some memories, though ^^
When May's VA said "You think your music is so relevant lah issit?!" a part of me smiled really hard, especially because I heard that barely a minute after finding out this was developed by a Malaysian studio
Has anyone notice that every time when the meter was being partial to rock, there will be additional guitar riffs or drum beats jumping in that make the background music more rock-ish? I mean wow
I think that tatiana is kul fyra based on the fact that Tatiana has a skin that looks like ashes, what could symbolize that her fire for rock has gone out?
This game deserves a sequel: No Straight Roads 2. With Bunk Bed Junction trying to save NSR from Mariachi, Country, Jazz, Opera, and Martial Industrial Music.
In my opinion, the game is pretty great because of the characters, but the "rhythm" based enemy gameplay when going to these boss fights don't really seem to work for me. Even though some enemies switch up the beat at which they attack, it ends up becoming a slap fest where you just get hit, heal, and then keep slapping them. I feel like they left most of the rhythm gameplay for the bosses which is pretty fun, especially with the added challenges. Also, trying to get ammo to kill flying enemies leaves you open to their attacks which can get pretty annoying. Other than that, the music and the voice acting, good lord it really gives the game some life. It feels like I'm watching an animated movie! And the characters have plenty of personality. I didn't really play the game for the combat, I played to see what cutscenes happened next, and what interesting bosses I had to fight. It's kinda like cuphead, where the real gameplay is within it's bosses. 8/10 for the characters and story alone, just a genuinely fun story with plenty of exciting boss fights.
good analysis, i exactly agree what you've complained about the combat. they taught us to avoid and attack with total rhythm-based system in the turorial which sounded very interesting, but it actually is not much more than just a common(but still, really fun) boss fight, since we get really excited and confused when it's bullet hell. too bad that we can't focus on musical systems enough, but i loved its storyline and concepts for color/character/world design very much, too. another utterly great game that might've had nothing to do with music, yet they added them to make it truly satisfying.
I think it might have been more interesting regular enemy wise if they came at you in slightly larger numbers or energized more with each other, Like say you have some long range shooters protected by those beat wave bots that were doing their thing on every other beat forming a wall that was shifting. Or they take out the regular enemies focus all of the combat into the bossbattles and have the levels going up to them be more focused on some smaller quicker puzzles and hazards that shift with the rhythms so you almost feel like your fighting the music of the boss your going after to just even get to them. Still though the boss battles seem fairly interesting, and like you mentioned the character design and music and setting all have me sold. and granted I haven't played the game so maybe I'm not getting it as far as the gameplay goes and it's one of those games that's more fun to play than watch. I'll have to see about getting in on the PC. Edit: I think I realized something about the art and why it's drawing me in, it's kinda got that colorful eccentric vibe like Psychonaughts does but in a different direction.
@@Freezezonian I totally agree. What if they implemented more rhythm-based hazards or platforming? I also wish they mixed it up, I got tired of seeing the same robots over and over again, just with a different texture/color. What if there was a rhythm-based mini-boss you had to fight, or even more unique enemies that attacked in triplets, or off-beat? This action rhythm concept could be taken to so many levels, it would be cool if they implemented these ideas in a DLC or something. That would be pretty awesome!
@@LinguiniSoup I'd really like to see a full on sequel where we get to see more styles of music too. Also a little more variation in the bot design might have been interesting, even if it was just slightly different colors to match the boss they are guarding. But you also gotta make sure you don't make it hard to tell what the enemy does from just looking at it. Honestly I just want more. More music, more art, more game.
Ok, I’m at Tatiana’s fight, and she’s spitting facts! Like even if NSR is in the wrong, Mayday is really just acting on impulse. Shit, their band is just destroying other people’s belongings (which is a crime I think) they also have no idea how to run a city. They should have thought this through. I mean I don’t know, I’m only 14
3:37:00 - But Fire and Sea DO kind of mix, if it's like a volcano. :p They create islands together, they create life... sorry if that's a bit dramatic, but still. XD
I have major respect for Tatiana. I have a hard time hating her when all she wants is order in her city. Not to mention she stays in a badass tower lol
I really disliked Mayday and Zuke after they destroyed Yinu's piano. That piano was a gift from her late father. And tbh at the end I cried. Poor Yinu and her mother.
Didn’t they fix it up at the end though, or was that a separate piano? Plus, it wasn’t ENTIRELY broken, Yinu could still play that sad little song ;-;. But real talk, I don’t think they knew how important the piano was until it was too late ;-;
1:26:10 i love how sayu says “ive made up our mind” which hints at the fact that there’s a group of people inside of sayu controlling her,its such a great detail 😭

I'll delete this comment once I see if this is true or not, but I have a prediction (potential spoilers?) EDIT: Keeping this up because I was right???? (EXTRA SPOILERS) What if Tatiana is secretly Kul Fyra? Her hair has red streaks in it, her face looks like cooled lava, and I'll probably find more details later. Probably isn't true, but if it is, then like... woah.
You know what this game actually reminds me of? An old story my music teacher told me about. Some planet had music being controlled, and it not being allowed. Then a rebel group fought back and whatnot.
am I the only person who thought the kids controlling Sayu were the cutest damn people in the entire game??! like i wanted to adopt all 4 (yes even big chungus) and give em a big ol hug i love them so much 😔😔
I wish people made more games like this... This is packed to the brim with the kind of creativity and style you used to see in older games, back before everything had to be a hyper-realistic FPS...
I like how this game brings up a lot of issues people tend to overlook, as well as the fact when you watch through things again, you can see clues to the ending in how Tatiana says and reacts to things
I’m so glad to see this game exist. A full length game that incorporates music into its fighting? Perfecto. This is basically my dream. Well. If I was to fight against people to save music.
Story: Take a cyberpunk base, mix with a Jack Black "Rock" movie, flavor heavily with some Persona 5 and some Pixar for the surface crust, and you've got yourself this. Gameplay: Platforming, some later Final Fantasies (especially VII remake), some Dynasty Warriors slugfest, and a Guitar Hero, again spiced with some Persona 5 vibes. I'm liking this.
I love how DJ West's battle is literally with his shadow self. And his "fans" or support is faceless shadows beneath him while he's on a sort of pedestal. It's interesting to think of potential symbology behind the boss battles. Eve was honestly my personal favorite because of the esoteric nature of the fight. Being awakened I really like to find messages within media. This game is actually speaking about a lot of truths about the treatment of the inhabitants of vinyl city. Especially with the theft of their energy when Zuke and Mayday powered up the city, it was a blatant way of showing just how "valuable" they're considered.
Timestamped the bosses as other than that you're just exploring the city most of the time. Enjoy the full game :)

Scott Peltier would that city even be possible
@@doubledownpleasegosubtotte4274 A city that has mainly music playing and having music artists performing of all kinds of genres could technically be possible. The main unrealistic part of the city is how electricity is produced (And maybe it won't be as full with lights irl as in the game)
@@Darkheartfries250 the other unrealistic part is entire sections being elevated mechanically, and that system being controlled by a single random record player out in the open where everyone can get to it
@@d3str0i3r Oh yeah that's true too
when you get to the roots of Rock however it makes sense to make it the central catalyst in a game like this.

@@CosmicVibin
True...
@@CosmicVibin especially also at the end, she realizes that they kind of turned into the new NSR

Scat music. I just want one portion about scat music during the Jazz part.
Wtf, dude. Your photo is... Well... Preety comparable to mine... And look at your fucking text.
Now seriously, your photo is praticly mine... But BEE
good analysis, i exactly agree what you've complained about the combat.
they taught us to avoid and attack with total rhythm-based system in the turorial which sounded very interesting, but it actually is not much more than just a common(but still, really fun) boss fight, since we get really excited and confused when it's bullet hell.
too bad that we can't focus on musical systems enough, but i loved its storyline and concepts for color/character/world design very much, too.
another utterly great game that might've had nothing to do with music, yet they added them to make it truly satisfying.
Imagine their Dlc is fighting Country Music or any genre of music
Local Guy From A Grocery Store guess they also have to fight those Christian music

I really disliked Mayday and Zuke after they destroyed Yinu's piano. That piano was a gift from her late father. And tbh at the end I cried. Poor Yinu and her mother.
Didn’t they fix it up at the end though, or was that a separate piano? Plus, it wasn’t ENTIRELY broken, Yinu could still play that sad little song ;-;.

Being awakened I really like to find messages within media. This game is actually speaking about a lot of truths about the treatment of the inhabitants of vinyl city. Especially with the theft of their energy when Zuke and Mayday powered up the city, it was a blatant way of showing just how "valuable" they're considered.
