When I was a kid, I had a model of the type of plane that Mr. Mulligan is, only it had graphics representing Wiley Posts plane, the Winnie Mae. Planes of the 1930s were beautifully designed. But that was the art deco era. A lot of beautiful designs came out of that time; architecture, cars, clothing, ships and locomotives.
Dangerous? These are no more dangerous than any other vintage airplane. Delmar has described the handling of the GeeBee Racer as delightful. Racing at close to 300 MPH close the ground has its inherent risks in any type of airplane.

@@paulachapa4423 Thank you for the link. Harold and I shared a hangar in the 80's. We hung around airport together so much all the other airport bums called me Harold Jr. I blame Harold and a couple of other old TWA guys for my 41 year airline career.

I was there for this, it was an awesome event to see in person!
I was there at Oshkosh. I spoke with the pilots afterwards & they said they were actually pretending to race. Very nice.
