I work as a Starbucks barista and this year it came out in august. The problem is the fact that we (my store) run so quick that last year we ran out before Halloween. Starbucks also changes the recipe every year so the drink never tastes the same from year to another. In addition to all that, we can add pumpkin sauce to anything so we have a latte, cappuccino, Frappuccino, iced coffee, hot coffee, cold brew, nitro cold brew, and literally whatever drink you want. This comment took me almost the whole video to write and a few points I would have made matpat covered in the video (example: it’s the only drink around fall, while we have up to four drinks around winter)

As a Brit I've never understood the collective freakout about PSL. On the other hand, I'm now super curious about strawberry cream cake & "cheesy" drinks! #thanksMatPat
What does being a Brit have to do with it? Starbuckses are just as common here as they are in the States, and Pumpkin Spice dominates the autumnal menu here, too. Your ignorance of PSL has nothing to do with your national identity.
@@febotroilo7225 it kinda does. The PSL may be a huge trend for you in the US, but it's just not as popular in other countries, especially countries who don't have autumn or Thankgiving-esque holidays to speak of. Here in the Philippines, PSL is never spoken of. The Philippines is a tropical country, and everyone's way too obsessed with 3-in-1 coffee, which is the immortal trend here. I literally never heard of the PSL until I saw this video. I asked my parents about it, and they've never heard of the PSL until I told them. That's how obscure PSL is here. Sometimes nationality *does* have an effect on our "ignorance". It's like how cheese is trending here. You might not understand the trend, but we do, and the products created by it are insanely good. P.S. Yes, we do have Starbucks here, but it is expensive for us to afford to buy regularly. Besides, why buy an expensive cup of coffee when you can buy a coffee packet that gives you a similar experience for almost a hundredth of the price? Coffee packets are all the rage here, and everyone's shameless about it.
@@adlirez The same happens in the rest of America (the actual one). Since we're closer to the Equator we don't really care much for seasons, so in my case I had never heard about that beverage until now.
But you have to admit it's kind of cute when, all these years later, people still act like they've made some amazing observation about the lack of pumpkin.
You know, I never tried anything with Pumpkin Spice and such because I don't like pumpkins lol. Well thanks for the clarification. I'll try some Pumpkin Spice this year
Well you can read it both ways and where I live, pumpkin spice is not a thing but adding spice to pumpkin is, so reading it with that devide is not that wierd
Makes even more sense why the pumpkin spice never hit me. While I love the weather and look of autumn, I’ve never had a particularly happy memory associated with it. All of mine are with Winter, so I’m pretty much obsessed with peppermint. I use peppermint essential oils for air freshener and I gorge myself on the peppermint mocha when it comes around.
The video plus your comment have hit me with the realization that I don't have any particularly fond memories associated with a given season because I've never been fond of socialization. Every month, every season, every major holiday involved a family get-together that I loathed... Feck, that's depressing.
First Pumpkin Spice, then Salted Caramel, and now Lotus Biscuits Flavours that someone realised would taste good as a general flavour and sets off a taste bud revolution in every corner of the edible market
From an Italian here, I bought a package of Starbucks coffee grounds to do with the Italian moka machine. Gotta say, I dunno if I'm doing it wrong, but Starbucks coffee genuinely tastes like "water that just got the flavor of coffee", quote from my mother who loves coffee. Probably it's because our taste buds are so used to our blends that any foreign one would taste awful. But as you've said, it's more of a cultural thing than anything else.
The only reason I know this exist is because my dad said, “It’s fall, you know what that means?” And my older brother excitedly chirped, “PUMPKIN SPICE LATTE SEASON!” And my dad was so disappointed, “no... I raised a failure, it’s football season.” And I still bring that up every fall
For anyone curious, the "cheese" added to the drinks mentioned near the end of the episode are very much cream cheese/cheese cake-like... not like sharp cheddar or anything 😂
Whenever I see “pumpkin” flavored items I can only think of the early fall harvest of my grandmothers pumpkin harvest, and her amazing pumpkin porridge, pumpkin soup, pumpkin Blins (a crepe like pancake), and so many other things she made out of the very pumpkins she worked hard all year round to grow. I was fortunate enough to experience food made with pumpkins; even if it came at the cost of not being able to drink overpriced and strange flavored coffee. Love you babushka.
I'm actually allergic to pumpkins, so I figured out the hard way that the latte does in fact now have pumpkin in it. I was one of the few people that was actually sad the pumpkin spice latte now has actual pumpkin in it. 😂
Video Idea Suggestion: How to optimize your gas station self-serve Icees in the fastest time. So I like the occasional icee, and I had a chance to pick one up at a gas station the other day. If you don't tap the glass of Icee solution against the countertop a couple dozen times before you finish filling up your cup when you finally go to take a sip of Icee goodness through your spoon straw, as you poke the surface of your beverage, you will be met with dissappointment as it deflates like a sad balloon. So there I was, filling up a cold one at the self-serve Freeze-E machine. I was tapping the cup against the countertop to make the icee settle, letting the air bubbles escape and as I re-re-refill my icee to get the most coke-cola icee goodness I could for a dollar and a thought occured to me. "Am I doing this right? Surely there is a more optimal way of compacting the icee into the jumbo sized icee cup than filling the cup to the top and gently tapping the cup against the countertop to sift out the air bubbles." I muttered to myself as the line continued to grow behind me, each gas station patron social distancing behind me, seething with contempt. Any chance we could get a Food Theory analysis of the packing science of frozen beverages and the mechanical dynamics behind finding the optimal sifting motion to pack even more frozen goodness into each glass?
@@ennuiedstealthgamesfan621 that is roughly my method, but the freeze-E brand at the speedway I frequent has a foamy-expansion effect to it. When it leaves the nozzle, it explodes and takes a while to "settle", usually about 30 seconds and the Icee has shrunk an inch in the cup and by the time I got to my car after checkout I was holding a cup less than half full. It's mostly air unless you shake it down flat.
Matpat, is a spring counterpart to the PSL: mcdonald's shamrock shake. It's limited time, gets you feeling like celebrating st. Patrick's day, is green, and it pretty much stands alone in terms of drinks like that.
there is a fall one that i like at culvers called the salted caramel pumkin concrete mixer i get at least one each year however its started to get harder for me as i have a minor dairy allergy
The only difference is that you can actually get a PSL during its limited time period. Try to get a Shamrock Shake and they'll just tell you their machine's broken XD
God I wish pumpkin spice only went as far as coffee. Other day at the grocery store I overheard a woman ask a worker if they had any pumpkin spice brats. The species is lost
The sense of smell is amazing (taste will always be my favorite tho). There was this one odor remover spray my mom would use back I'd say about....7 years ago, and that's what the house would smell like, it had a VERY distinct smell to it. She got it again for the first time in years. Stepping inside all I could think of was when I was playing Minecraft on an august evening, where the sun was shining warm beams of light inside. The days when life was simply remembering to do my homework before going into school the next day.....
After working at Starbucks for 7 years, I've stopped caring what people order. I just put it together and hand it off so i can go back to my many never written fanfics going on in my head. Basically on auto pilot unless a Karen comes in or something else distracting comes up.
same with me for Culvers, but iv only worked for 2 years and tbh the pandemic changed how I work so I have to think on my feet to get stuff right. Weather that be drive thru, shakes or setting orders.
That was amazing. I watched the coffee one yesterday and since I am an ex-partner from Starbucks, this one caught my eye. I love your humor towards it all because every thing you say is true. The new drink line up has drifted further and further away from the actual taste of coffee. Every once in a while, a new drink will come out that refocuses on coffee, but the best sellers are always the sweet drinks. And I have to give credit to Starbucks, they really do put a lot of time and energy into making any beverages, even the roasts. Highly enjoyable. I hope you do more on restaurants.
As someone who plays a LOT of video games (from Minecraft, to Smash Bros.) I know how absurdly powerful nostalgia can be. There are people playing older versions of those two games that are over 10 years old by now because their nostalgia for it makes them "objectively better" despite being statistically not... its crazy man.
Conversely, the cheese drinks throughout east asia right now are all awful IMO. I had hoped Asia would discover cheese in the form of blue/feta/swiss/etc., but this is worse than Kraft singles.
Yes! I have never wanted to try a drink so bad before. I love strawberries, so I can only imagine how good it would be. Though maybe not a Christmas drink in the states...summer, maybe? I hope it takes off and they think of introducing it here in the states...
Food theory idea: What is classified as a cookie? Like what makes a cookie a cookie because some people call them biscuits like an Oreo, some people say that they are cookies and some people say they are a biscuit
It's just a US/UK thing, it's not difficult. Here in the UK, cookies = biscuits, and biscuits = scones. What you call scones are inedible rocks made of flour and sugar.
@@smickothesmickestI've heard of it, but pumpkin was never a thing for me so I always ignored it. Also Starbucks was more a social gathering thing for me so I haven't been to a Starbucks since March.
I have a theory that Starbucks intentionally misspell people's names so that they talk about it and share it on the internet 'for the meme' which then promotes publicity for them
How common is that really, though? Granted, I only have small anecdotal evidence, but I've only ever seen it a couple of times. Even then only with less common names and usually a letter or two (like a vowel swap or a "c"/"s" replacement). Now, I could definitely see them promoting the joke for free advertising; but it really seems more to be a thing talked about rather than witnessed. Urban legend style.
I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. That said, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Starbucks for making Pumpkin Spice the flavor of fall. It may only be sold once a year, but there is no scarcity in this house! Last year, we bought enough pumpkin spice tea and pancake mix that we only just ran out and this year we have added pudding to our haul. If creamer didn't go bad, we'd stock up on that too, lol.
I’ve always hated fall to me it’s starting school, cold is coming, early Christmas decorating, (if you put decorations up before thanksgiving you are a horrible person) and being expected to eat with family
As a person who works at Starbucks, my last manager actually would remind us, when we'd get super nasty customers yelling at us about stupid stuff, that caffeine is a drug, and a lot of people are addicted and the worst customers are probably just letting the withdrawals control them. It doesn't make it okay, but it made it easier to power through when we'd get a string of people cussing us out for running out of their favorite seasonal drink
Liking the effects but despising the taste is a very real thing. Coffee is an inherently vile beverage people have a stockholm syndrome with, because they like what it does to them.
Brewed coffee smells like acid to me. I don't understand why people like it. The only time it ever smells good is when people add extra things to it, and it still can't hide the taste. So yeah, I fully understand why people claim they like coffee yet the commercially ground and produced coffees they like are the ones that routinely try to bury the actual flavor of coffee. I accept that people like it. Different people have different tastes. I just don't understand why they like it.
@@AlashiaTuol I love acidic things. I don't know if that has anything to do with my not as low stomach acid pH as is normal or not. I used to eat lemons like others ate oranges, as a small kid. I also ate oranges as oranges. And grape fruit. Some people don't have saliva enzymes that are efficient in breaking down carbs while chewing, and those people usually are utterly bewildered by the fondness for bread the people with abnormally efficient saliva enzymes can have, because they don't get the same flavours nor the same brain reward effect from it. Genetic diversity is how species become more hardy to environmental changes, because if everyone were the same not only would the same resources get far more competition, but it would be so much easier for us all to die out from single issues.
@@Call-me-Al I typically love sour and acidic things too. I actually pour key lime juice on top of citrus desserts if they're too sweet, and when purchased, they often are. But coffee is like... A _bitter_ sour thing. It's hard to explain. To me it's less like edible acid and more like battery acid.
@@AlashiaTuol well, the so called "3rd wave" espressos I tried last year left me confused, wretching, and bewildered. The past half decade or maybe decade has had light roasts of coffe being the trend, which seems to taste too much like battery acid to me as espresso, while I absolutely love classic Italian style espressos. The third wave style espressos really don't seem to agree with my stomach nor taste buds. I definitely have a thing for some types of bitter flavours, though. Zucchini and Brussel sprout bitterness used to be really vile to me, but thankfully I have lost the ability to be able to taste the bitter compound in the former and the latter has been commercially bred to not be bitter these days. But even as a child I was quite fond of some types of bitter-sour, like green bell peppers, grape fruits, raw cranberries, and so on, which is why I chalk it up to genetics a lot.
Is it wierd that the whole campaign against pumpkin spice latte just made me want to try it even more?? You kept showing pictures of it and describing it and my mouth was watering hahaha, going straight to a video recipe from here (I'm not from the us)

@@FiveOClockTea does it taste a bit like pumpkin??? The thing that comes my mind when i think about it is pumping juice from the harry potter park in islands of adventure hahahaha
MatPat has done a few videos covering stuff like that in the past. I haven't seen them in a while so I won't be able to perfectly explain the concept, but basically people subconsciously enjoy being in conflict rather than being peaceful, especially if they're on the winning side of the conflict. So, with all the negative press around pumpkin spice, people are more likely to try it because the trend isn't dying out and people want to like it so they're on the winning side of the argument. His Film Theory video on Trump's election describes the phenomenon pretty well.
if you think about your brain and how your brain is making you think about itself and how your brain gave itself two names, the brain and your name... IT'S ALL TOO META!

Considering how in Vietnam ( where I am assuming that you come from due to your name) , Starbuck coffee is consider to be too weak and most Vietnamese often choose the other beverages and snacks rather than coffee
The irony is that "strong coffee" isn't even dark coffee. Dark (esp the level of starbees beans) actually represents the caffeine being burnt out of the beans, so their blonde roast actually has the most caffeine.
@@victoria-iu9xd In Asian countries, we really like dark roast coffee, and Americans hate it, which is honestly really interesting. Many Asians I know much prefer Starbucks because it is darker than many other places serve, but ultimately like ones you can bet at Asian stores the most.
I remember hearing about a startup trying to make fake coffee. As in, replicating everything about coffee without actual coffee beans. And as they were trying to hone onto the perfect coffee flavor, they tried removing the bitter compounds and they said that was the perfect coffee.
I have never had much starbucks, let alone a PSL. This made me curious to the point that I might actually buy one next time I happen to run into a starbucks when it's available.
@@statics1 nope. My dad was diganosed with bone marrow cancer and basically had no immune system throughout the fall. To limit his odds of serious complications all of us stayed home as much as possible. That meant a trip to Starbucks for something as utterly trivial as a drink was completely out of the question. So, maybe next year? (P.S. he is clean atm, but will likely have to repeat the treatment somewhere in the next 5-10 years, maybe more. He responded very well to the treatment, so odds are towards the extreme end of that predication.)
In my fam, adding cinnamon and/or the whole range of traditional pumpkin spices was done to coffee and tea long before Starbollocks as just a festive thing. Bake cinnamon rolls, add sugar, cream and cinnamon to the coffee. Bake pumpkin bread or pumpkin upside-down cake or pumpkin pie, add the whole pumpkin spice rack to the coffee. It just made sense? We never added actual pumpkin to the coffee though ... because ... weird. LOL Though I guess, technically, SB didn't either, for the most part. :P But I was kind of surprised that it took SB so long to catch on to the idea of spiced coffee.
Yeah, adding spice is like an obvious thing to do to get cosey. I still struggle with pumpkin bakery for it tends to get gummy, even without restrictions and I have to avoid eggs and gluten so it gets even more chellangeing. Beets behave so well but pumpkin/squash realy does not
@Reem Barrak Don't worry your not missing out, I mean I've never had the Latte, but Pumpkin itself and Pumpkin pie really isn't the best, like I'll have the pie on Thanksgiving because of tradition but outside of that one day not the best. @@febotroilo7225 I'm aware it's on the seasonal menu but was referring to the popularity, not its availability.

Makes even more sense why the pumpkin spice never hit me. While I love the weather and look of autumn, I’ve never had a particularly happy memory associated with it.
What
I want this even though I don't have Icees
You're supposed to stagger it, pour the drink stop for 3 seconds or so and then start it again, repeat this at least 3 times
What's an Icee? Is it just pop? Or is it like a slushie?

“I love coffee that doesn’t taste like coffee”
“Wait... doesn’t that mean you don’t like coffee??”
“What.. nooo...”

I LOVE when MatPat put balloon boy in the coffee like I just got done watching a game theory on fnaf

Lmao exactly. Pumpkin pie is a thing for a reason. Why was he acting like pumpkin donuts, waffles, etc. weren't a thing until Starbucks?
Yeah, adding spice is like an obvious thing to do to get cosey. I still struggle with pumpkin bakery for it tends to get gummy, even without restrictions and I have to avoid eggs and gluten so it gets even more chellangeing. Beets behave so well but pumpkin/squash realy does not
@@SingingSealRiana You can try draining the excess water from the pumpkin to avoid this issue and also maybe mix in some sweet potato.
13:35 I literally said to a coworker, at starbucks, today, "Why don't we have a cream cheese drink, like the same flavor as the Cheese Danish?"
MatPat: talks about pumpkin spice and autumn nostalgia
Me: * laughs in middle eastern *
ahahahaha
@Reem Barrak
Don't worry your not missing out, I mean I've never had the Latte, but Pumpkin itself and Pumpkin pie really isn't the best, like I'll have the pie on Thanksgiving because of tradition but outside of that one day not the best.
What's the traditional Middle Eastern food for this time of year? Do you guys even have anything you only eat/drink in a certain season?
All we know is pain.....
maybe that's why I hate pumpkin spice latte,,, perhaps if they make hummus or falafel latte?
Same here. I certainly understand now why the PSL has become a part of American pop culture; the nostalgia factor is undeniable. Having never grown up celebrating Thanksgiving or Halloween (annually), I couldn’t quite relate. This video helps to explain in part why, when I tried Starbucks’ PSL for the first time ever, I was underwhelmed.
I made a specific cake last month my grandmother used to make when she was still around.
Man, I can tell you that I wasn't the only one at the family table who shed a tear in memory.
This brain hitting stuff is strong af
i hope you're doing well!

Video Idea suggestion : Why are chips so addictive (any kinds of chips). And why do we tend to pick them as a snack.
TLDR: it’s the crunch and the salt.
And da carbs
And furthermore why YOU CANT JUST HAVE 1 FRENCH FRY
Because Cheetos
Found out I have a nightshade issue... I cant have chips anymore.
But I still crave them.
I drank pumpkin spice before i started learning it was "basic" >< and before i even knew it was popular. My mom was just like," Yo want one?"
Everybody’s talking about autumn and I’m just here melting in spring-
Yes you read me correctly *melting*
