I just heard this song on an AM radio station yesterday when i was pulling up to get gas. I was so taken in by it I pulled out and parked off to the side to listen to the rest of the song before I pumped my gas. Then I went straight home and bought the Casino cd.
Blue Rodeo is a Canadian treasure. To add to some of the personal meanings this song has for others, for me this speaks of battling depression, something that too many people struggle with. The first verse, I've had days and nights that were struggles to get through, far from home, alone in hotel rooms, that feeling in the last line of the verse...The second verse, the first lines are about feeling lost, just sitting and watching life, feeling numb and detached, and the second part is about relationships, the pain of seeing them crumble because you weren't yourself - and I still carry such sorrow for the pain I caused someone special who tried to support me at my lowest...The third verse - my life was a house on fire, a disaster of my own making, and in my depression I felt people were indifferent, but really I had pushed them away...the second part of the verse, and the bridge to the chorus - this was what I told myself over and over again to try and pull myself out. People get depressed and feel isolate, but suffering from depression is something diffferent...it really is losing control of your life and even if you know whay you need to do, you don't the means to right yourself... Saw Blue Rodeo only once, when I was in university in Kingston, Ontario in the early 90s. Got stood up by my date for the concert, so I went alone...but they were phemonenal....I was walking up Princess Street later that night when I passed Jim Cuddy, he was just walking on his own, told him thanks for the show, and for his music. Quality song-writing, true Canadian vintage..enjoying this now in the fall sunshine while sipping on Canadian vintage of a different kind - 12-year old Canadian Club whisky from a bottle from 1978, found in a flea market here in Korea...
Have ALWAYS LOVED THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!! Living in Detroit and having Windsor radio on the FM dial brought it and other Canadian treasures into my life, thankfully!!!
From Detroit myself. Love bands like the Hip, BNL, The Odds. Arcade fire. Sarena Ryder. So many more. Stations like 89X, the River, CJOM, even CKLW growing up before FM radio brought such great music to Michigan to grow up with. As a broadcast rule Canadian radio has to feature 30% Canadian artists , so many bands that wouldn't get airplay anywhere else got to heard in USA. Love that rule!
this song saved my life and it came along at a low point in my life the words hit home thanks be to you Greg and Jim seen these guys live so many times from bars >concert halls>fair grounds>twice on the round at the stratford festival theater on the avon never a dissapointment >they capture studio quality live amazing harmony ohhhh yes
It's funny seeing how many people feel that this song was life-changing. Before this was released I had pushed away my one true love away, largely because of fear. This song and Bruce Springsteen's One Step Up let me know how disconnected from myself I had become. Fortunately she called me on my birthday to say goodbye, which ended up with us meeting at a Roy Roger's chicken stand off the side of the NY Thruway where I accidentally proposed to her. We've now been married for 31 wonderful years.
This song reminds of that poem Mayakovsky by Frank O'Hara; a guy who feels disconnected and unable to get "inside" his own life. Also, it really does express the isolation every Canadian feels from time to time.
I just love Jim’s voice. He just sing so free and clean. A total awesome talent. Not to mention what a great songwriter he is. Thanks for such a great song. If I could spend a afternoon with someone it would be this guy. Musically speaking of course!
These lyrics helped in challenging times to keep looking forward. Today, I can say, I am myself again and even better. ❤ You guys are always keeping it real. Thank you!
I can't say how much blue rodeo got me thru. But here I am back thankful for blue rodeo during difficult times. Proud canadian here beyond proud of our canadian talent!
My anthem when I lived in Calgary. Every word was perfectly apropos. Used to hear it every day at the same time...on my way westbound on 17th ave with the snow capped mountains and the sun setting in front of me. Never forget that feeling. Thanks Blue Rodeo...I think you gave me sanity.
When I hear this song I always think of friends struggling with PTSD who just wanna feel like they did before the incident that so dominates their life.
My dad was a ww2 war vet, D-day and all, I only thing I knew about him was his anger and disappointment, I've had to manufacture my confidence my whole life
I remember the first time I heard Blue Rodeo. THIS is the song that was playing on the radio, way back in the early 90's. I was very impressed with the vocals, the twangy, Roger-McGuinn-esque electric guitar and the overall fullness of the band's sound. Then I found out these guys are from Canada (!), and that was it: I went out and bought all their records, up to/including Casino. Although Casino is no longer my auto Blue Rodeo go-to album anymore (I prefer Diamond Mine), hearing this music again takes me back to some joyful/memorable times. LL
Spent the night in emergency, home now and I am so thankful for being alive but I can't wait till I am myself again...... I am singing this loud and proud. Life is fleeting. Enjoy it while you can.....
My dad died in in a house fire Burlington, Ontario. This song is my life..sort of ! I am my Dad who died .Til I am myself again..I never will be! I am! I really get it!
This song encapsulates the hopelessness of addiction perfectly. Despite being wrote years before I was born, I feel like these words were meant for me to hear. Such an underrated group, love from Canada!
I'm in Cincinnati Ohio. I saw the video for this way back in the day, 1990, or I probably would have never heard of Blue Rodeo. Bought the Casino CD, this song and the song Montreal are as good as anything anyone's ever done, IMHO. So powerful and emotional. You believe every word of both songs are true. Plus ,anything featuring a Rickenbacker 12 string is gold to my ears.
Makes me wish I was actually Canadian instead of a border dweller wannabe. Their composition and musical layers are thick. The combo of that Rickenbacker and 335 are so wonderful. That organ part amazing. The drums layered perfectly. And the voicing just sublime. Such a superior band. Nothing like them anywhere today or then.
Don't know how I missed this group and song for so long. I heard snippets of this song for different advertisements for years then heard it for the complete song first time on the radio driving to work the other day. F***ING GREAT!!! Not a guitar solo guy but that lead guitar is insane!!!
Me too. My uncle was super abusive, and he took my need to thrive and replaced it with the will to survive. I hope to forgive him but it's hard. This song helps me immensely.
I still find it fascinating that there is a song for every season of my life, and every time I feel lost, scared and unsure. How is it possible that someone I haven't met has written the words I feel in my heart right now. It helps to know I'm not alone in my fears. Thank you Blue Rodeo for knowing how it feels.
This video is just amazing..the imagery matches the song so perfect....Sitting at the bar, climbing the latter, then falling back down...It perfectly tells the story of the song
I'm a long-time bass player and it's my humble opinion that the "engine room" (bass and drums) in this song do an excellent job. The band is a warm prize of the sweet land to the north.
Goodness ! I heard this song on Boom 97 .3 FM and it took my heart , I have listened to it over and over again , I can't get enough of it ,amazing , they composed it with love ,thank you very much for the message and teaching as well .
This band has a cult following in America! This mean's a lot of people love them!! They have been my favorite band for 37 year's~ Wish they would at least come over the Windsor Border to give a concert for the one's who have loved them for so long! I love Blue Rodeo!
proud to say, that throughout the years, deADES, BLUE RODEO has been, and will continue to be, the soundtrack to my life. CANADA ROCKS, eh!--THAT'S RIGHT, EH!!
Absolutely love this song! Had to look up who did it after I caught it on the radio this morning. I hear some Byrds, Beatles and Dylan inspiration there! This old hippie feels this one! Thanks for posting it, peace!
I just moved to Port Huron Michigan and heard this Band for the first time on Canadian station. "Til I Am myself . Thought I was listening to a song from 60s band "Byrds". Awesome sound! Will check them out more on TH-cam. So many great Canadian bands other than the "Guess Who", Bachman T,O and "Loverboy" through the years that U.S has never heard. Keep rocking Canada.
People in the States wanted them to hit it big~ They have many fans here. They have been my favorite band since I discovered them over 2 decades ago~You are right, Canadian bands are the best! This band is my all time favorite. I wish I was born on the other side of the river. Peace~
I was in the Winchester once. I think. I was pretty hammered (I am not terribly proud of that). Perfect backdrop for this song. BR are Canadian treasures. Great song!
I got hooked on this song from 89x in Windsor. They used to play a more alternative version with just a little less twang. I still love this version too thou
One of the best things about growing up in Michigan: being able to listen to 89x. Thanks to the Canadian content laws, they were forced to play quality music like this.

My favorite group of all time (sorry, Dire Straits...), and up until maybe 1998, the most underrated band in Canada. We used to cover this one back in the day.
Maybe a few years earlier. I think they pretty much flew under the popular radar before then; more of a "cult" following. I don't believe they really got "star" status here until "5 Days in July"(94?), solidifying their position in Canadian music, imo.
absolutely hilarious every time I listen to Dire Straits I want to listen to Blue Rodeo and everytime I listen to Blue Rodeo I feel the need to listen to Dire Straits after
You are correct! There isn't a "good reason"......it's 'cuz they are Canadian. The American music industry is also a big influencing factor. There's a lot of really bad music out there right now doing very well! Go figure?
They made it big where it counts-Canada. Sure, they never sold out to the lowest common denominator of rock bands like nickelback, but to me, they have something bands like that lack-integrity.
I typed till I gain controll again and thought It was that song until It came on, But I don`t care at all. Blu erodeo is the best! I saw them live like about 6 times and I`ll always love them!
just found my "dream guitar" - a lefty electric 12, made by "Eastwood"; it's a Gretsch-looking knock-off, for only $529.00!! Blue Rodeo cover, here I come!
Filmed at the old Winchester Hotel which is now a Tim Hortons at Winchester & Parliament in Toronto.. that big bartender in the video.. that was Clayton the most gentle of a soul I ever knew.. He would've given anyone his last dime & not even care.. R.I.P. my dear friend
Actually, it is a Rickenbacker 360/12 for the video too. The 360/12 has 6 tuner pegs on front and 6 more on the back of the headstock with 2 slots to feed the strings to the back. You can see this if you freeze-frame the video about 2:19 and compare it to the pictures here: www.musiciansfriend.com/guitars/rickenbacker-360-12-string-electric-guitar
The Byrds started with the 12 string Rickie with Hey Mr Tambourine Man .Roger McGuinn gave one to George Harrison when they met - then came the songs I Need You and If I Needed Someone , two great Harrison songs where he uses the 12 string Rickie :-) excellent observation Kay :-) Love that ringy. jangly full sound!
Rob Minderman George Harrison was using one before meeting McGuinn. Harrison was given a prototype in February 1964. You can see it in Hard Days Night.
I remember seeing there release of the Casino Album at the Matador and it was a great time , They were my favorite band at the time and made me a lifer !

thank god my parents had good taste in music and I was raised on Blue Rodeo
ADqv1 no they didn't
They're very good!!!
Same, my parents always listened to 99.9 BOB FM, which was basically all 80s and 90s classics. It was awesome.
Agreed Jennifer - My parents didn't know them, but I thank friends at Peaches Records and Tapes for turning me on. Jam on it!

I travelled through Canada in the early nineties.... this takes me back..,. Great country, great music..........................
I suspect I’m not the only one who sees this as part of their life’s soundtrack.
I grew up in England- I don’t know why I hadn’t heard of Blue Rodeo… I absolutely love their music..
I've lived every word of this song. This band got me through some hard yrs.Their music really struck a nerve in me
I honestly believe "Somebody Waits" got me through the lowest point in my life. That song still lifts me every time I hear it. :)

Blue Rodeo is one of the greatest bands . The songs of triumph ,tragedy and eveyday hardships are the most honest of the human experience.
I played this tonight for you dad..

Some wine with that cheese?
@fluttergirl75 people like FLUTTERGIRL75 are disgusting. Just a miserable, disgusting waste of oxygen.
Your comment got me... I'm sorry for your loss...
Thank you Blue Rodeo for this song and all of your songs. Most underrated band in history.
I WAS LITERALLY SEARCHING FOR THIS SONG FOR TEN YEARS, AND FINALLY, A SONG WELL DESERVED
Every time I break up, this music is the backstop of everything I do. It's the musical iteration of loss, grief and recovery all in one.
It's funny seeing how many people feel that this song was life-changing. Before this was released I had pushed away my one true love away, largely because of fear. Just one of several great songs by this legendary Canadian Band.
Gotta love that fantastic "jingle jangle" 12 string Rickenbacker sound - great band..!!
This song reminds of that poem Mayakovsky by Frank O'Hara; a guy who feels disconnected and unable to get "inside" his own life. Also, it really does express the isolation every Canadian feels from time to time.

Intro noticeably inspired by The Byrds’ Here Without You from their first album. Love Blue Rodeo and The Byrds and that 12 string Ricky.

🎈"Til I Am Myself Again"🎈
I want to know where
my confidence went
one day it all disappeared
and I'm lying in a hotel room
miles away
voices next door in my ear
Daytime's a drag
nighttime's worse
hope that I can get home soon
but the half-finished bottles of inspiration
lie like ghosts in my room
I wanna go
I know I can't stay
but I don't want to run
feeling this way
til I am myself
til I am myself
til I am myself again
There's a seat on the corner
I keep every night
wait til the evening begins
I feel like a stranger
from another world
but at least I'm living again
There are nights
full of anger
words that are thrown
tempers that are shattered and thin
but the moments of magic
are just too short
they're over before they begin
I know it's time
one big step
I can't go
I'm not ready yet
til I am myself
til I am myself
til I am myself again
I had a dream
that my house was on fire
people laughed while it burned
I tried to run but my legs were numb
I had to wait til the feeling returned
I don't need a doctor
to figure it out
I know what's passing me by
when I look in the mirror
sometimes I see
traces of some other guy
I wanna go
I know I can't stay
but I don't want to run
feeling this way
til I am myself
til I am myself
til I am myself again!
🎈Blessings

You are correct! There isn't a "good reason"......it's 'cuz they are Canadian. The American music industry is also a big influencing factor. There's a lot of really bad music out there right now doing very well! Go figure?
They are Huge!!!!!!!
Did u get it ? Do u still have it?
Great song..video was what it was for the time
Thanks for posting. I have not heard this song in years.
JTF2 Number 1 JTF2 Forever
Love Blue Rodeo......
Casino is one of the best albums ever made. It does not have a bad song. Rare these days. Just a masterpiece of music.
Shilo Haapala 100%agree
Them, too :)
Different genre, equally amazing talent.
Love the guitar sounds. Good song.
+CV SoG I wish I knew how they got that effect. For a little while, I thought it was a 12-string.
It looks more like a Rickenbacker 330-12. Same great sound though.
Saw em in north bay Ontario, good concert!
Excellent song
