In the past, the main sport that Thailand hoped to get a gold medal in the Olympics is boxing. Nowwdays it shifts to Taekwondo, because of Coach Che. Thai people really appreciate what he has done for the country, and he totally deserves the citizenship.

As if I remember The first time that Coach Che came to be a coach in Thailand. In Korea, no one appreciates him. It is not the taekwondo coach that the country values. He came like... There is an opportunity to come to work and earn money. But Coach Che is a person who is very determined, combined with the characteristics of Thai people. The culture we look at Coaches (teachers) are like parents. So it clicked. He lives well here. There are people who value him and praise him. Thai people respect him as the father of Thai Taekwondo. He probably wants to stay here.
Thailand always allows those who love and understand Thailand to be honored when you do good deeds for our country. Even the father of Thai modern art is an Italian named Silpa Bhirasi.
If you notice, In the history of the Thai nation. We always honor foreigners who bring new innovations to Siam. Can be traced back to the Ayutthaya period. We never block foreigners with different languages or religion. We accept and praise what they has done well for us.

You can see Coach Che's passion and his ambitions. He deserves every citizenship from every country he wants.
Personally, I find that Thailand and its people have a wonderfully enchanting context. If one has the chance to experience, immerse, and live life with these aspects, they’ll be subtly engulfed by the Thai essence, almost unaware. Eventually, these elements undergo a seamless transformation, evolving into a true Thai identity.

ปัญหาของมวยไทยที่ไม่เข้าโอลิมปิกซักที ก้อเหมือนเซปักตะกร้อ คือที่ผ่านมานักกีฬาไทยผูกขาดการได้แชมป์ บรรดาชาติสมาชิกส่วนใหญ่โดยเฉพาะชาติมหาอำนาจ เขาก้ออยากได้เหรียญทองจากกีฬาทุกประเภท พอไทยผูกขาด ชาติสมาชิกเขาก้อมองว่า ถ้าให้เข้าบรรจุในโอลิมปิกไป ตนเองก้อไม่มีโอกาสลุ้นเหรียญ แบบนั้นจะบรรจุไปทำไม แต่ตอนนี้นักกีฬามวยไทยของชาติต่างๆเริ่มทัดเทียมกับของไทยแล้ว จึงทำให้มีโอกาสจะได้รับการสนับสนุนจากชาติสมาชิกมากขึ้นแน่นอน ส่วนเซปักตะกร้อ ถ้าไทยยังผูกขาดแชมป์แบบเดิม ก้อโอกาสยาก ผมว่าเผลอๆเทคบอลอาจเข้าโอลิมปิกก่อนเซปักตะกร้อด้วย เพราะเหตุผลอย่างที่บอก มันไม่ได้ถูกชาติใดชาตินึงผูกขาดแชมป์

Phayao is a very small province in Thailand. But here we have a Taekwondo club and a school that has taught Taekwondo to children for more than 30 years.

You're right. Coach Che is the reason Taekwondo is popular in thailand. He brought success to thailand. He create "Panipak Wongpattanakit aka Tennis" to become a living Taekwondo legendary. Btw coach Che should have been thai citizen long time ago. Too bad, our imigrant system was inefficiency. Ttill couple years ago, Thai prime minister realise how value his dedication is to thai Taekwondo sport.
Nowaday, Taekwondo is popular as level as voleyball, but not same level as Mauy Thai or Football.

The reason Thai loves him so much is not only because he made us a gold medal in Taekwando. Just one sample: about 15 years ago when he brought us a bronze for the TH in Olympics. At that time there are many countries who offer him jobs as a nationnal coach for their countries. Some even offeered him at least 7 times benefit of what he has in TH, yet he turn down all the offer. When asked by some media why he did that. His answer (at that time he was not make a decision to apply for Thai citizenship) is that he would be coach for TH until the country reach the gold medal, after that he would return to SKR and would be a coach for universities. He would not be a coach of any country besides TH. When asked why, he said that for him all the TH Taekwando athletes are like his childrern, and he would not adn could not teach any others to beat his own kids. That's one of many reasons why Thai love him so much.

Mr. Choi Young Seok is South Korean Taekwondo coach and the keyman behind the success of Thai Taekwondo Team. Beginning as a headcoach in 2002, from one of the least known and least success Thai sport teams, Taekwondo becomes one of the most success Thai sport teams in many levels of competitions, ASEAN, Asian and World Championships and in multi - sports event like SEA Games, Asian Games and Universiade. Taekwondo is the third sport which Thailand won a Olympic medal, bronze silver and gold Medal in 2004, 2008 and 2020 respectively. [Thailand made an Olympic debut in 1952. The first sport to win the medals is Boxing, bronze in 1976 (Thailand's first medal.), silver in 1984 (Thailand's first silver medal) and gold in 1996 (Thailand's first gold medal). The second sport to win medals is weightlifting, bronze in 2000, silver in 2012 and gold in 2004, all are from female weightlifters and also the first female medalists in each medal.] Taekwondo is also the first sport which Thailand won a medal in the first competition (Taekwondo becomes Olympic sport in 2000. Thailand's first participation was in 2004.) The female 49 Kg category secures the success by having won a medal since 2004. The success of Thai team makes this sport become more well known and popular in Thailand which comes along with Korean Wave in Thailand in early 2000s when Korean entertainment industry become popular in Thailand. Despite some difficulties, he is still working hard on coaching the Thai team. He became Thai citizen with Thai nam Chatchai in 2023.
Let me echo the general consensus in saying that this is great content...I'd have never guessed the popularity of this sport in THAILAND..however, having actually trained there, Thai Boxing all the way for me 🙏
Coach Che is our NATIONAL TREASURE. What he has done for our country is tremendous. To have Thai citizenship you need to sacrifice your birth citizenship. Coach Che waited until his mom and old relatives passed away due to his respect to them.
And we are now proud to call him THAI.🇹🇭🇹🇭 Our King gave him the knighthood (Thai style).

Panipak Wongpattanakit won the latest Olympic goal medal not the first. It was Somluck Khumsing that won the first Olympic medal for Thailand from Boxing in 1996 Atlanta Olympic. The first ever Olympic medal Thailand won was from a bronze Olympic medalist boxer name Payao Poontarat in 1976 Montreal Olympic. There are only three sports that Thailand won Olympic medals; Boxing, Weightlifting and Taekwondo.

SOMRAK brought the first Golden medal for Thailand in 1996 he was actual a Muay Thay fighter , one of the best from Thailand in history he was s good nobody dared to fight again him anymore so he switch to boxing and get the Olympic golden medal were was Floyd Mayweather also in that tournament, SOMRAK was member of the Famous Jocky Gym in Bangkok with many Champions in Muay Thai

Tae Kwon Do has been popular with the upper class kids and adults for decades. In the past, Muay Thai was kind of looked down upon as a “poor man’s sport”.

I took Tae Kwon Do for 2 years in 1974-1975 from Kun Suk Park a 10th Degree Black belt Master largely because of the popularity of Bruce Lee's movies. I earned a brown belt and then before I earned a black belt, I joined the military. I have never lost what I learned and without thinking if someone comes up to close, or the environment becomes hostile, my body shifts immediately to a defensive posture I learned in TKD, meaning my weight shifts about 60-40 to my back foot. Always using feet to keep attacker away from you. Lessons I never forgot. I recommend any martial art at a young age. I never had to use it either because the lesson is to NOT be offensive and look for combat unless it is sporting event and agreed on or self-defense.

Almost every mall has a school for Taekwondo where kids as young as 4 participate. My grandchildren and their cousins all trained in Taekwondo.
Correction please, with respect - He gone viral since 2004 by winning bronze at the Summer Olympics and it was View, Yaowapa. Tennis was the first one to win Gold. He was already famous back then and the discussion started then about giving him Thai citizenship.

The first international multi - sport event Thailand participated was the Far Eastern Championship Games. Thailand, Siam at that time (The name was changed to Thailand in 1939.), participated only in the first edition of the Games in 1913 in the Philippines and won no medal. The Far Eastern Championship Games was ablished before World War II. The Games was the model of the Asian Games in the next decades. Siam nearly participated in the first edition of FIFA World Cup in 1930. The 1930 World Cup didn't have a Qualification Round, every country whose Football Association was recognized by FIFA was invited to join. The Football Association of Siam was found in 1916 and joined FIFA in 1925, so they were also invited. By the way, since traveling from Siam to Uruguay by boat took very long time and it was very expensive trip. And Siam had to control the national budget to recover the economy which was affected by the 1929 Great Depression, so the plan didn't happen. Thailand joined the AFC in 1954 and has participated in World Cup Qualification Process since 1974.
After long absence, Thailand joined the international multi - sport event again in the 1952 Olympics. Thailand took 24 years to win the first medal in 1976 and another 20 years to win the first gold medal. Thailand competed in every Summer Olympics since 1952, except the 1980 Olympics in Moscow since Thailand joined the US - led boycott of the Games. Thailand also participated in 2002, 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2022 Winter Olympics. Thailand, along with other 6 countries, India, Indonesia, Japan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka and Singapore, are only 7 countries that have competed in all editions of the Asian Games. Thailand won no medal from 1951 and 1954 Asian Games. Thailand won the first medals in 1958 and the first gold medals in 1962. Thailand hosted 4 Asian Games in 1966, 1970, 1978 and 1998. The best performances was 24 Golds 26 Sivers and 40 Bronzes in 1998. The best performances when Thailand wasn't a host was 2002 Asian Games with 14 Golds 19 Silvers 10 Bronzes. Thailand participated in every SEA Games and always finished as the top 3 nations with most gold medals. Thailand also hosted 6 SEA Games, 1959 (The first edition.), 1967, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2007, all except 1995 and 2007 were in Bangkok. The 1995 SEA Games in Chiang Mai was the first edition which the host is not the capital city. The 2007 SEA Games was in Nakhon Ratchasima. Bangkok will be the host of another SEA Games in 2025.
After high economic development in the 1980s, Thailand had a development in sports with the medals from very Olympics since 1984 and the first gold medal in 1996, along with many gold medals from Asian Games and SEA Games, for a sustainable development of the sports, Thailand established the National Sports and Development Fund in 1999. Thailand won more than 1 medal from every Olympics since 1996, and won more than 10 gold medals from the Asian Games since 2002. (Before that time, except the editions which Thailand was the host, the best performance is 4 Golds 2 Silvers and 8 Bronzes in 1974.) Many teams also have the opportunity to participate in many international events. I hope that the development will be greater in the future.

I'm Thai and know that Taekwondo is an international sport, But our Muay Thai as war fighting art although as a sport today, It's still very dangerous for the participants.

There is a Taekwondo gym three doors down from expat bar in Ubon, full every night with young kids….. go east, leave Bangkok, koh sumai, Chang Mai behind, your vids are great but getting g repetitive as far as were you travel to on the vast country that is Thailand

Taekwondo is very popular among Thai parent, because they don't have to worry that the kids will accidently kill somebody by using Muay Thai. 🤣🤣🤣
